AIBU about DD's gym knicker "shorts"?

RiderGirl · 16/08/2023 10:44

DD is just turned 13 and has taken to wearing "shorts" that I can only describe as looking like 1980's gym knickers in length, the literally sit in the crease of her buttocks. AIBU in saying that she isn't allowed to step outside the house wearing them? We keep falling out about it but I think they're wildly inappropriate!! To make it worse she wears them with a large t shirt and it just looks like she's in a t shirt and pants 🙈

My opinion would be leave her alone and let her wear what she wants.

Mrsjayy · 16/08/2023 10:46

You must have bought them ? Or given her money for them you can't really complain when she wants to wear them. As an aside all the teenage girls are wearing them I'm assuming it's just fashion atm.

Stompythedinosaur · 16/08/2023 10:47

I think if they cover her butt, then it's a fashion choice that's up to her.

While I have no desire to myself where gym knicker shorts, I think women (and girls within reason) can make choices about their own bodies (assuming private parts are covered).

OhYetAnotherBrickInTheWall · 16/08/2023 10:47

It’s fashion for 13yo. You’re not supposed to understand it. She’ll be wearing something else in 6 weeks.

OnlyYellowRoses · 16/08/2023 10:47

Meh, it's fashion at the moment. My 14 year old wears similar around the house. I just usually comment to her that 'bottom clothes need to be always longer than your vagina' when we're out in public and she'll laugh and put a pair of jeans on if we're going out somewhere.

BarbaraWoodlouse · 16/08/2023 10:47

Nike pros by any chance? I call them Nike pants. It’s a look that’s been around for a while and I think you’ll be fighting a losing battle here for many years.

Personally I’d just go with it. They are only legs.

Idratherbepaddleboarding · 16/08/2023 10:48

Nike Pros? They’re literally the only thing you see young teens in these days.

RitzyMcFitzy · 16/08/2023 10:48

Oh is this those so called scrunch bum shirts?

lovewoola · 16/08/2023 10:51

I wouldn't allow bum crease length out of the house unless it's beach/holiday.

@OnlyYellowRoses I don't think the OP has an issue with them around the house.

LivingDeadGirlUK · 16/08/2023 10:53

Come on OP didn't you wesr hotpants when you were a teen? Its not really much different.

RiderGirl · 16/08/2023 10:56

I suppose you could describe them as hotpant length, of the very very shortest variety. They're pulled up so tight at the front that nothing is left to the imagination (think camel toe). Maybe I'm out of touch but I think they're horrendous and leave nothing to the imagination, she's 13!!

OP posts:
RiderGirl · 16/08/2023 10:58

They're not scrunch bum but this sort of length

camel toe doesn't work for anyone except camels!

Mrsjayy · 16/08/2023 11:00

If you honestly think they are too tight or practically indecent you are allowed to say no you are not wearing those and take them off her . You didn't reply to who bought them.

Friggingfrog · 16/08/2023 11:01

They are mega short, I see loads of teens in them. But they are fashion and I suppose only legs, their bums are (just about) covered

applebee33 · 16/08/2023 11:02

Dd wears her Nike pros the same way, wedged in the crack of her arse. It's the fashion and I hate it but what can you do

HotSince82 · 16/08/2023 11:03

My DD wears them too, shenis 14.

My line is that they are gym wear. So she can wear them to the gym and put on something more appropriate for other activities/outings etc.

It's not only the length but the fact that they are sontight that you can see everything in them, the shape of her arse cheeks and labia even...

Not cute really.

Shes a pretty girl who shouldn't need to show the contours of her genitals to feel trendy or attractive but apparently its fashion now....

WomanStanleyWoman2 · 16/08/2023 11:03

I recoil every time I see these. They’re always worn by the people on whom they are least flattering too - and worst of all, in beige in a couple of cases recently, so it looks from a distance like they’re naked below the waist 🤮

Ginmonkeyagain · 16/08/2023 11:06

Ha - they look like what would be called "batty riders" here in south london.

Although at school we had to walk up two hills to the playing field in gym knickers and airtex t shirts

PuttingDownRoots · 16/08/2023 11:07

I can remember campaigning not to wear those bloody things for PE at Secondary school (including cross country in local parks!!!)

I would tell her, bluntly that men will look and leer and maybe comment. Ultimately it is her choice and she shouldn't have to cover up because of men, but unfortunately the reality is that it does happen.

Multipleexclamationmarks · 16/08/2023 11:08

They're awful. They are in fashion atm though. My dd 15 has bigger knickers! She wouldn't be seen in them. I'm of the opinion that you're allowed to draw a line in the sand with your children so I'd say fine in the house, put some clothes on when you're going out but then I'm old.

SiousieSoo · 16/08/2023 11:08

My 13 year old wears these too. I was horrified also to begin with but it really is what they are all wearing and it therefore has become the 'norm'. So, like others on here, I just go with it unfortunately.

I occasionally manage a branch of a holiday camp provider, and am flabbergasted sometimes by what some of the younger female staff members wear.
Just recently, one staff member came in skin tight (and I mean SKIN TIGHT) shorts, that were so far into her bum crack that she may as well have not bothered wearing anything. Another staff member came wearing the pants-style shorts you mention. I get that it's a holiday camp, there's a lot of sport and moving around involved, but you are still a member of staff, and need to look professional.

It's not a problem with the male members of staff, who come in football style shorts, or jogging bottoms.

I feel like it makes me sound like a right old fuddy-duddy, but my parents would never have let me go out to my WORKPLACE wearing basically knickers.
