Just after everyone's opinions. I'm on an all inclusive holiday . Nothing flash . European destination. Hot sunny . 3*. Would you feel offended if a female sunbathes topless at the pool? Just for context I have done , but put bikini top on to go in pool and her drinks . It's literally just going topless when laying on sunbed . More context age range is babies up to 70+ . Lots of different shapes and weights of people . Lots of bellies make and female and lots of big boobs on men. Like I say this is just for context . Just interested in people's opinions. I'm with my husband on holiday .

I don't understand why anyone would want to expose a delicate part of their body to the sun and risk burnt boobs. Plus unless you have small breasts it's not exactly more comfortable to lie with your boobs out than wear a bikini, or walk around is it?

Fine in Europe. Not in South Carolina. I speak from experience 😉

Ah yes, the South; someone topple over senseless did they? Grin

Could have been worse though - it was only my second time in the US, and as a smoker back then I once remarked to some guy that I was "dying for a fag" ...

Tiqtaq · 03/08/2023 17:01

I think it's fine but unfortunately you will get some letchy attention.

Motomum23 · 03/08/2023 16:56

Literally all pools in europe are designated topless

They really aren’t. It varies from country to country.

enjoyingscience · 03/08/2023 17:02

Totally depends where in Europe you are - somewhere with more conservative or religious views I’d never do it and risk offending people. Other places which are more liberal, absolutely crack on.

saw a chap tanning his anus on a beach in southern Spain once, had a full on yoga pose going on. Boobs are nothing compared to that.

Brieme · 03/08/2023 17:02

Not many do it now do they?

Not one around our pool today in Canaries.

MoggyMittens23 · 03/08/2023 17:05

I would find it a bit weird but I find laying out to get a tan in general weird and why do that to the skin on your boobs as well. The topless bit wouldn’t make me feel uncomfortable. Just would think you are a bit dumb

Holly60 · 03/08/2023 17:07

Maireas · 03/08/2023 16:35

It used to be very, very common. Less so in recent years. I think it's all the camera phones and lack of privacy with images.

I wonder if it's also because the actual idea of 'tanning' is quite dated?

I think if younger people want a tan nowadays they get it out of a bottle. Most younger people I speak to are very aware of the ageing affect of the sun and actually try to avoid its effects. Factor 50 is key, apparently.

Text123 · 03/08/2023 17:08

Why on earth do people compare this to a man going topless? It's not the same thing, and it's so lame to pretend that it is. Women have breasts. They are seen as sexual. Men do not. It's like saying, "well, my 5 year old hasn't got a top, on so why do I have to?". It's not a comparison that makes any sense.

Personally, I find my own breasts highly sexual. I am aroused if topless. I would not feel comfortable at all getting my breasts out in front of strange men and kids. Just no.

Would I judge you, if you did? Yes, in all honesty I would. I would think that you were attention seeking and that it was highly inappropriate. If you don't want tan lines, you can move straps across. Of course, you'll get a load of women saying, "your boobs, your choice", but if their DH was on the sunbed next to your sunbed, I doubt they'd be so enthusiastic. Especially if you have great boobs, and theirs pale in comparison.

But this is MN, and often people don't say what they really feel.

This made me spit out my gin and tonic. It's really cheered me up 😂

enjoyingscience - same, cracking up😎

I agree with all of that @Text123

Yes, tanning as such is quite dated. It's actually a while since I heard someone concerned about "tan lines"!

I was once taken to task in London, which was my home city, by American tourists for reading a novel in public which had a painting - not even a photo! - of a naked woman on the cover. Can’t remember what book it was now as it was a long time ago but it was definitely just mainstream literary fiction, the sort of thing that would be in the window of Waterstones.

I have also been to a football match in the UK where some Americans told us to be ‘less aggressive’ in our support for our team. We weren’t even swearing or anything, just shouting. Apparently it made them uncomfortable to hear us shouting “GO ON MY SON!!!” or something

maddiemookins16mum · 03/08/2023 17:16

My breasts would burn badly (even with high factor sun protection on), they don’t see the light of day the other 349 days a year. I din’t see the appeal personally.

milveycrohn · 03/08/2023 17:16

Not if it's a hotel with children.
Otherwise, if a hotel for adults, then its fine, though I would not do it myself.

I do hope so. I never did deliberately sunbathe but was brought up at a time where there was less focus on sun safety and got some sunburn during the summers as a child. Being diagnosed with malignant melanoma aged 28 with two primary school children was terrifying. Probably being insufferably sanctimonious but I wish people would stop seeing sun damaged skin as aspirational.

Emmamoo89 · 03/08/2023 17:19

Fine with me

Carpediemmakeitcount · 03/08/2023 17:20

It's only breasts I breast fed my children. I was on a beach with my children and the women were topless in Lanzarote. I was wearing a swim suit. It doesn't bother me they are not doing anyone any harm.

FrivolousTreeDuck · 03/08/2023 17:20

Go for it!

Oh dear Grin
As for being asked to be "less aggressive" is support of your team, I can only think they'd never been to a major football match ...

CouldIHaveThatInEnglishPlease · 03/08/2023 17:22

I've done it when younger and would have no problem doing it again in the future. Nice to get a bit of sun there occasionally. And tbh, I would sunbathe topless in the garden too

I don't though, because I go on holiday with my dc, and I don't think my teenage sons want to see my boobs

Gladyys · 03/08/2023 17:22

God no. On a beach fine where everyone's spread out but by a pool in close confines? nope.

continentallentil · 03/08/2023 17:23

Dotjones · 03/08/2023 16:08

Yes it's perfectly acceptable. Countries like the UK and the US are the odd ones out in not allowing women to go topless. (Well in England you can go topless perfectly legally but hardly anyone does because they think they're not allowed to.)

I really notice it’s not as common as it was because social media.

Desperatenow1 · 03/08/2023 17:24

You just don't see it anymore, not in nicer hotels/areas where I go anyway!

That would be my answer.
