Just after everyone's opinions. I'm on an all inclusive holiday . Nothing flash . European destination. Hot sunny . 3*. Would you feel offended if a female sunbathes topless at the pool? Just for context I have done , but put bikini top on to go in pool and her drinks . It's literally just going topless when laying on sunbed . More context age range is babies up to 70+ . Lots of different shapes and weights of people . Lots of bellies make and female and lots of big boobs on men. Like I say this is just for context . Just interested in people's opinions. I'm with my husband on holiday .

'You visit a country, think its local culture is irrelevant and think they'relacking in common sense and consideration for not changing to your preferences while you're there.'

As if it's local culture to sunbathe topless. Like pissed up Brits they will tolerate all kind of unwanted behaviour. I've no idea why you think they'll start issuing your made up 'permits'. They need business from tourism, inconsiderate behaviour unfortunately will have to be accepted.

Back to the op, no you don't do it by the pool at a family hotel. Permits or no permits.

It is culturally normal to sun bathe topless in lots of places. I’ve holidayed off the tourist traps in Croatia for example and many local women were topless or naked when swimming and sunbathing. Would you really be so entitled as to ‘make a complaint’ about women doing what they always do in their own country?! . The whole world isn’t made up of people who think exactly like you do!

Right oh.

I keep saying that I am from southern Europe and I grew up with women going topless at the beach , no issue at all . It is something that I have never encountered at any hotel I have been to in Italy,Spain,France,Portugal etc. ..so it is not a specific country and local culture .It is my choice to choose a hotel that has a superior level of service and expects a certain kind of behaviour from their guests.

At the hotel pool?

DrSbaitso · 06/08/2023 18:56

I am not enquiring ahead of time if the hotel permits topless sunbathing, loud music, putting the beach towel on the sunbed at sunrise etc...

More fool you if you encounter it, then.

So far I have not encountered any of the behaviours I described...I guess you get what you pay for in this case.

budgiegirl · 06/08/2023 19:26

I have gone topless at a pool before in Spain, there were quite a few topless women there. It wasn't a hotel, more a restaurant/club with very large pool, and not many Brits. Mostly Spanish and Germans. So no, I wouldn't feel in the slightest bit offended. I honestly don't know why so many people are so uptight about it.

budgiegirl · 06/08/2023 19:48

windmill26 · 06/08/2023 17:29

This.
The topless sunbather would annoy me the same way as other hotel guests listening to loud music, bomb diving in the pool or getting drunk and making a fool of themselves. If I am paying for a 4 / 5 star hotel I expect a certain level of behaviour from my fellow guests.
I am from Southern Europe and I am used to seeing topless women on the beach but I have never encountered any at the pool (any pool!).

What snobby, elitist comments!! And not at all true, either. I've seen just as many topless women at expensive hotel pools as I have at cheaper all-inclusives. To be fair, there weren't that many at either, just a few, but the cost of the hotel had absolutely nothing to do with. Don't assume for moment that just because you pay more, topless sunbathing will be banned. The only way to guarantee this is the check with the hotel before you book. And it's quite offensive that you are implying that going topless is poor behaviour. It isn't.

Ok,whatever. 🙄

Devora13 · 06/08/2023 20:45

I am very aware of local culture so tbh, if I did a bit of research and found it might be a problem for the locals/staff I'd tend to avoid (well I'd probably avoid nowadays anyway, my stomach doesn't look great in a bikini even!). But I have in the past, although when I've been told it's offensive to local sensibilities, I've not done.

Zebedee999 · 06/08/2023 20:58

Gladyys · 06/08/2023 17:54

'You're a guest in their country. Nobody is obliged to put aside their harmless cultural norms because you don't like it but still want their sun.'

Yes Brits abroad are known to respect cultural norms Grin

I was once on holiday in an African country. Couple of women topless by the pool the young male staff couldn't take their eyes of them. It wasnt their 'cultural norm' you see. Anyone with a brain cell should've been able to see how inappropriate it was. Still gotta focus on those tan lines!

You'll never stop men admiring a woman with a physique they like; some will look some won't. But then Gladyys surely there must be times when you've admired a fine male physique by the pool?
Your issue seems to be you don't like the idea that men may look at topless women, but I have no doubt that interest between the sexes goes both ways so why care? It's what makes the world go round right?

ZuzuMyLittleGingersnap · 07/08/2023 04:52

"I think the key part of the OP is that she is at a 3 resort.*

I have found 4/5 you get a different clientele.*

I make no further comment."

and

"The topless sunbather would annoy me the same way as other hotel guests listening to loud music, bomb diving in the pool or getting drunk and making a fool of themselves. If I am paying for a 4 / 5 star hotel I expect a certain level of behaviour from my fellow guests."

Wow. 😮

Apparently, fewer stars than 4 = well, why expect anything but ?

StarlightLady · 07/08/2023 05:39

This is getting silly!

There are many expensive top spa hotels in France where topless is permitted. Star rating and elitism has nothing to do with it.

ZuzuMyLittleGingersnap · 07/08/2023 05:43

Exactly!

Really seems it's a Marmite thing.

StarlightLady · 07/08/2023 05:51

To add, in France the number of hotel stars is based on facilities available, it has nothing to do with the actual quality of the hotel or lack of breasts on view.

Spud90 · 07/08/2023 17:17

No, I would not care. I’ve seen plenty of topless sunbathing on holidays in Europe and it didn't bother me. I have a 12yo DS too and it wouldn’t bother me if he saw a woman topless sunbathing.

Some of these comments I find a bit bizarre and wonder if these people have breastfed considering the attitudes they have towards breasts.

Coastisclear · 07/08/2023 17:27

pinkyredrose · 03/08/2023 16:19

I'd think you were desperate for attention.

Round a swimming pool.. definitely this👆

For people who say it's only a body why stop at boobs then? Why not go the whole hog and fling off those bottoms as well?! Men too!! Because generally we don't want to see everyone's bits that's why, not when we're all trying to enjoy the same communal space.

sassyclassyandsmartassy · 10/08/2023 16:05

I don’t personally but couldn’t give a rats arse of other women do. Doubt I would notice TBH, too busy reading my book and actually taking a bit of time to myself!

StarlightLady · 10/08/2023 16:18

@Coastisclear - There is about as much comparison between women’s top and bottom half as there is hands and feet.

It’s about gaining equality with men for those who wish to so. Nobody is suggesting it should be compulsory.

Coastisclear · 10/08/2023 17:22

Starlightlady in that case are you suggesting public pools in the UK also have topless swimming? If it's about equality then presumably that is OK too. Society/men rightly or wrongly still often see women's breasts as sexual, rather than to feed a baby (and yes I did breastfeed all my children) so until that changes it's not the same as a man going topless. If we are going to address this inequality let's look at the bigger picture rather than making it about something a few body confident women do abroad on holiday.

StarlightLady · 10/08/2023 17:31

@Coastisclear - It works in municipal pools in Copenhagen. My view is that this is the only way we can get more people to be sensible about it.

We agree to differ on the best way forward, but I don’t think we are poles apart 🌸

Coastisclear · 10/08/2023 17:50

@StarlightLadyI think UK culture is very different to Scandinavian, and not in a good way, but I take your point 🙂

LlynTegid · 10/08/2023 18:52

OP, did you enjoy the rest of your holiday? @HowmuchcanispendatChristmas

Almost a 52/48 division in opinions!!

Indeed. As long as women's breasts give and receive sexual pleasure they are going to be seen as, erm, sexual.
