Things on MNs that are confusing?

Just curious if anyone else wonders about these things:

  1. DP/DH with super outing hobby - what are these hobbies, naked trampoline tennis?

  2. DP/DH with super stressful job - what is it? Is it a known stressful job or is DP/DP just describing it as that? Anyone ever consider DH is incompetent or has been over promoted?

  3. The notion of a "posh wank" - it doesn't exist, it's a lie told by men caught cheating. Do people really believe it's a real thing?

I’m intrigued why everyone votes labour on here and no one voted for Brexit.

And no one, absolutely no one read the mail.

Despite every other thread being quoted directly from the mail. With a pathetic faux apology calling it ‘daily fail’. You clearly read it, why the pretend hate.

watersprites · 23/07/2023 22:14

I get confused by the we earn 500k but we felt scared borrowing more than 200k. a) where are these cheap houses in areas with high salaries b) it's unusual to be that risk adverse particularly when those who earn well normally aren't.

AutisticLegoLover · 23/07/2023 22:14

And if you have got ASD then you've diagnosed yourself and everyone and his dog has ASD because it's being over-diagnosed and no-one ever used to have ASD.

watersprites · 23/07/2023 22:16

Oh & everyone has stunning & super tall children! I live near a large secondary & most teens aren't taller than me.

  1. oh my god this has come up before this is definitely a thing.

I've done it many times

pizzaHeart · 23/07/2023 22:22

I agree that DP and DS are very confusing.
I’m also confused when people are asking why their house don’t get an interest from buyers. Well, the price is too high obviously.

I’m not from UK originally so any confusing things go straight on my list “British way of doing things/cultural features” and then I just copy them if applicable. And sometimes things which are confusing at first make perfect sense later.

It's not a thing. No way, no how. No man does this. There is no logic to it whatsoever. Why on earth would anyone go buy condoms specially for to masterbate or use one for this purpose? It makes no sense at all.

“I don’t know anyone who [does incredibly personal thing that you would have no way of knowing about]”

hyperbole in the extreme. You have no idea what others do

There are plenty of Conservative and Brexit voters on here.

  1. I’m always confused by how weirdly rigid and outdated Mumsnet is (in comparison to the real world) about dress codes for weddings and offices. In all the wedding outfit threads there are people absolutely losing their shit at the notion of someone wearing a dark colour to a summer wedding or attending as a guest in anything more modern/less formal than something Kate Middleton would wear to an official engagement. Weddings are almost never like that these days! It’s not 1955. And office wear queries always have people piping up to announce that anything other than a trouser suit and mid-height heels or a knee-length pencil shirt is ‘unprofessional’, or that any nail polish other than nude or pale pink is ‘inappropriate’. Who are all these Mumsnetters who seem to work in offices from the 1980s? It’s work, love, you’re not in a fucking Gold Blend advert.

  2. Posters who post dilemmas about aspects of their adult children’s lives that are none of their business and which the adult child should just be sorting out for themselves. “DD is 26 and has twice been passed by for a promotion at work, what should she do?” Well, Susan, I’d say she’s a grown woman who should be managing her own career without you getting involved, for starters, so keep your beak out.

  3. Rabid levels of anger about other people’s minor personal preferences, that affect nobody else in any way whatsoever. Threads where people are busting blood vessels over total strangers preferring winter to summer, or whether people choose to wear pyjamas to relax in their own homes. Just a complete inability to accept that different people like different things. So weird and Peak Mumsnet.

  4. The sheer confidence with which posters will declare someone an alcoholic because they drink more than the recommended number of units per week, as if they genuinely believe that alcoholism is diagnosed by numbers.

  5. People who think "logging it by calling 101" is an appropriate response to, eg, a childless man sitting on a bench within sight of the play area in the park.

  6. Posters insisting that they cannot be within 40
yards of someone who wears perfume without collapsing with a migraine.

  7. People constantly going on holiday with people they don’t like, and then wondering why it’s a disaster.

watersprites · 23/07/2023 22:44

🤣🤣 very true about weddings

If there is they keep awfully quiet don’t they 🤔

Oh & everyone has stunning & super tall children! I live near a large secondary & most teens aren't taller than me.

And the average height of a MN DH is 6ft 4 compared with 5ft 9 for the UK as a whole.

Well yes but that's because we get ripped to shreds by the universerati for being right wing 😉

FatherJackHackettsUnderpantsHamper · 23/07/2023 23:05

The answer to every question always seems to be ASD/Autism.

DH accidentally left the gas on and burnt the house down. He probably has ASD

should I spend my lotto winnings on a new car?i think you've got autism. Sounds like you r very focused on the car and socially awkward and find it easier to focus on the car than being around people...

*My daughter is nervous about her first day of primary school. You should get her assessed for ASD.

Etc.....

That's horribly narrow-minded of you - sometimes it's because they have dementia!

Belmondo · 23/07/2023 23:08

Bed linen. It's always extremes on MN - either people change theirs every night, or once every six months.

Family loans. A surprising number of people seem to accept loans from family members without ever discussing the terms. Chaos ensues.

Packed lunches. I'm always surprised by the consensus on MN that packed lunched for children take less than 10 seconds to prepare and require no planning/forethought/cleaning up. I know they don't have to be a big deal but they also don't happen by accident 😳

RudsyFarmer · 23/07/2023 23:12

Fizzadora · 23/07/2023 22:59

And why is that okay by the moderators? I don’t get it.

Robyn847 · 23/07/2023 23:13

I don't understand how people can post things like "Between us we earn £8500 a month and we're looking at moving so our new mortgage will be £700 a month. Is this doable? Do others survive on such a tight margain?".

What the hell are you spending your money on Sandra? Do you get a new bathroom fitted everytime you have a shower or something?

WhatWouldTheDoctorDo · 23/07/2023 23:18

That people don't understand that things aren't the same across the UK (I appreciate too there are plenty of non UK Mners). Weather, school holiday dates, school starting ages, house buying systems, how some words are pronounced...

Ace56 · 23/07/2023 23:20

MrsMarieMopps · 23/07/2023 21:55

I find the whole sequence of life events on mumsnet weird. So you have to get to a professional level in your career, buy a house and pay off so much of the equity that you can go part time after maternity leave, marry a man who does 50% around the house, equal number of drop off and pick ups but also earns enough to fully support you going part time. But even going part time he must do 50% of everything. If he doesn't then you must LTB and be a single mum but you can't claim benefits or take a career break. Then if you moan that you're struggling you can be sure that someone will be along to tell you that you should have chosen a better person to have children with. Basically, don't ever be a single mum but never settle for less than perfection in a relationship.
Oh and when you are a single mum you must never date again. Ever.

Yes totally agree with this! God forbid you have children before buying a house (with a garden), getting married and earning at least 60k.

BarbaraofSeville · 23/07/2023 23:24

On here they probably do, because it's unbelieveably disgusting to use a toilet more than once for a start.

I'm confused by the people who don't just fucking google the answer to factual questions as if it's somehow better to pick out what is the right answer to their question out of the dozens of different ones when they ask on here, for example.

What is the luggage allowance (for an unspecified airline with no information about what you've actually booked and paid for)?

What is the phone number for the UC helpline?

Is Asda open today?

Etc etc.

araresight · 23/07/2023 23:26

People why say 'NC for this as I have friends on here' and then go on to tell a story with so much specific detail that their friends will instantly recognise it anyway. What was the point of going NC?

I’m not sure about condoms but my friends ex was wanking into nappy bags.

What type of wank would this be I wonder

Scottishlanza · 23/07/2023 23:29

The ones where people ask for style advice, queue countless people posting hideous dresses which could vaguely look ok on a 6ft size 8 model (at a push) and the OP has said she’s 5 foot 2 and a size 18

I assumed that was so anyone who did recognise it couldn't then go and see what else you'd posted. So if you posted something detailed about a friend, they wouldn't be able to see another question you asked about a health related thing, or something to do with your relationship etc.
