Things on MNs that are confusing?

Just curious if anyone else wonders about these things:

  1. DP/DH with super outing hobby - what are these hobbies, naked trampoline tennis?

  2. DP/DH with super stressful job - what is it? Is it a known stressful job or is DP/DP just describing it as that? Anyone ever consider DH is incompetent or has been over promoted?

  3. The notion of a "posh wank" - it doesn't exist, it's a lie told by men caught cheating. Do people really believe it's a real thing?

Another Style and Beauty one. There are about 4 things that are always recommended in rotation:

A John Lewis style make over day, Sketchers and Hotter Tourist sandals and a jumpsuit. Rinse and repeat.

The only trainers you can wear are Sletchers. A poster may own Golden Goose and Axel Arigato but it's the Sketchers which gets the most compliments.

Need new sandals? Well you must have Hotter Tourist sandals failing that Saltwaters will do.

Recommended clothes/shoes/trainers are always hideous and are rarely "stylish"

A 20/30 something wanting to show a small bit of flesh will be told to cover up. I despair as to why people ask for advice on S&B.

You must never ask about Botox.

Also the extremes posters either "earn well" ie 6 figure salaries or are on the bones of their arse. Buying £1 million + properties or living in squalor. 5"10 size 8 or 4" 11 size 20. Neither will get responses from people who are like them.

Post on AIBU and you will always be unreasonable even if you are reasonable.

And lastly the only places/holidays which are acceptable are: Menorca, Mallorca but only to Puerto Pollensa, a cruise, interrailling, Ikos, Sani, Landal, Sunparks De Efteling, camping, road trip, holiday in the UK, camping in France, Cape Verde. . For a city break Barcelona gets trotted out each and every time. You must never ever go to Dubai or the Dominican Republic Again I don't know why people ask for holiday recommendations in the travel section.

I love MN and all the hypocritical posters. Wink

If you are a single parent and meet somebody new, you must only have secret dates for at least 6 years before introducing your child to your partner.

Do you know, the love for Uniqlo inspired me to give Uniqlo a try for the first time in years, and I was very pleasantly surprised!

I don’t understand the Hush worship however. It’s recommended on every thread. I don’t get it

I tried it due to the recommendation on herre. I find it fits poorly washes badly and doesn't last long.

I am with you on Hush though.

Yes! This too. As someone who can only afford ShoeZone prices these days I wonder where I fit in on MN?

LoisWilkersonslastnerve · 24/07/2023 19:40

I've been here since 2004 despite it being a cesspit of the type of sanctimonious fuckwits I actively avoid in real life. 95% of you feel the same I bet. That's what I don't get about Mumsnet. What are we all doing here?😂

Yerroblemom1923 · 24/07/2023 19:54

My DS/DD/DH etc etc has commited an armed robbery - what should I do?
Has s/he been tested for ADHD/Autism/dementia???
The classic response to EVERYTHING on MN! Drives me nuts. Some adults and children just do stupid things sometimes. End of.

DrSbaitso · 24/07/2023 09:09

For some of us, that's true. And since our parents won't accept that we know better now, damn straight they're not seeing the kids alone. What do you suggest?

I take your point, but I think this poster is talking generally about basic, safe care of their GC, not atypical circumstances .

Oneearringlost · 24/07/2023 19:57

DO we know better now?

Threenow · 24/07/2023 20:15

Gwenhwyfar · 24/07/2023 11:38

It happened when I was at school. It was just called dodging/skiving.

That is hardly the same as kids refusing to go to school! Dodging/skiving has always been around, but normally only for a day or so, and as for kids not being able to go to school because of anxiety, well it just didn't happen. There are people who deal with school refusers where I work, and they say the problem is getting worse all the time.

Threenow · 24/07/2023 20:21

MissAnneLister · 24/07/2023 12:23

There's absolutely no way for you to know if neighbours or random elderly relatives from the stiff upper lip generation had mental illness or not. Even with parents, it's the kind of thing that is often not shared with offspring.

I think I know my neighbours (aka friends) and parents/family better than you do. That's another odd thing about MN - apparently everyone suffers from some form of mental illness, and if they appear to be coping with a situation they really aren't, they are suffering and hiding it. Is it really so difficult to believe that there are people who just cope with whatever life throws at them and move on? I agree that it is good that poor mental health is acknowledged these days, but please stop with this assertion that "everyone" suffers from it.

usedtobeasizeten · 24/07/2023 20:29

VeterinaryCareAssistant · 24/07/2023 09:58

I've noticed that when the man is the higher earner all money is family money and must be shared equally blah blah blah, but when a man wants access to a woman's money its financial abuse and he should only be allowed her share of the bills.

Yes! Women must get married to have financial security….unless of course they have more money/property, they must never get married…

Threenow · 24/07/2023 20:31

MissAnneLister · 24/07/2023 12:32

This is complete bollocks, and if you actually do work in a place that supports people with mental health problems you should not be talking about it to win a silly agenda-pushing Internet argument.

It's shocking that someone who works in mental health care doesn't believe in mental illness and thinks it's all just spoiled kids with no resilience.

Where did I say I "worked in mental health care"? Maybe learn to read - I said I worked in a place where people come for counselling, the counsellors are tenants of the building, I have nothing to do with their work I simply see their clients as they pass through.

Also, where did I say I didn't believe in mental illness? What I do believe is that it is far more prevalent than it used to be. I also never mentioned "spoiled kids" - I simply said that there are a lot of children requiring counselling for whatever reason, which was in response to a poster who asserted that parents these days are so much better at raising children than they were in the past, and that children in the past were traumatised by their less than perfect upbringing. I do find it interesting that people (not necessarily you) who were not around at a particular time seem to know far more about life in those times than the people who were actually there, and lived that life.

TruthThatsHardAsSteel · 24/07/2023 20:41

When people show you who they are, believe them.

Quite a few people are showing who they are in this thread, with the crazy derailment and batshit arguments

WomanStanleyWoman2 · 24/07/2023 20:52

I find the attitudes to social media on MN confusing. It’s either utterly poisonous and WILL destroy your mental health, or unimaginably tedious - “Why do people think I want to see hundreds of photos from their holiday? Busy, important, incredibly special meeee?!” (as if their friends’ social media accounts are entirely for their attention).

Yet these same people will join an MN thread on page 28, stating “Haven't read the whole thread, but…” before waxing lyrical and ignoring the 17 updates since the OP. How is it that anything people they actually know (and supposedly like) post on Facebook is boring, but their opinions are apparently too fascinating not to share even when the topic has been done to death?

ThirtyThrillionThreeTrees · 24/07/2023 20:55

I agree with so much on this thread but still disappointed that no one has posted telling me about the super outing hobby or very stressful job - I was hoping at least one person would, using the NC of course!!

" Dodging/skiving has always been around, but normally only for a day or so, and as for kids not being able to go to school because of anxiety, well it just didn't happen"

It did happen. I gave an example above of a friend who dodged for months. She'd be called a school refuser these days.

VaddaABeetch · 24/07/2023 21:03

The location threads on places people hate.
I went to wales once & heard people speak Welsh. Im sure they were talking about me.

It rained in Galway & there was nothing to do.
Everybody in London is unfriendly.

I'm laughing at this because nearly everyone where I live goes to those places on holiday. I looked up Sani once because it had been recommended so many times on a local social media page . A week for a family of 4 in the summer holidays cost nearly half my salary! It looked amazing though. A friend is there this week.

We have been camping in France though as that's more within our budget for holidays

LaylaLjungberg · 24/07/2023 21:10

Praise be, I have found my tribe 😂

GOADY, that’s a bit goady, you’re coming across as a bit goady.

The use of it melts my brain.

PrimaniTu · 24/07/2023 21:21

What I find confusing is the same 3 people defending Harry & Meghan to the hilt on any thread about them. It's borderline obsessive.

If you look at the latest one on the Royal Family Topic about them being grifters those 3 posters have been defending them for hours. They seem to know their every thought and move right down to their bowel movements - well almost. I mean why?

Why waste time, energy expending hours arguing with strangers about whether they asked Biden for a lift. I mean who cares whether they did or didn't.

I reckon they are all Omid Scobie with different user names. Either that or AI bots.

Fizbosshoes · 24/07/2023 21:24

Sorry if already mentioned but I'm never sure of the point of
"How much are you spending on Xmas?"
It has (probably unreasonably) irritated me for years!
When people say "my budget its £100/child " for example, and then people will say "you might get away with that for a 3 year old but it won't cut it for a teen." ....as if you're supposed to rob a bank miraculously "find" another £400 because you have a teen. It's like there's a suggested amount rather than accepting people will have different financial situations.

SamW98 · 24/07/2023 21:33

I’m confused that about 90% of MN users are high flying career women who earn 6 figure salaries, are in the gym at 5am every day, run a marathon most weekend, take 12 holidays a year, hike up mountains and wrestle bears in their lunch break, find time to take their children to piano lessons, ballroom dancing and extra Latin tuition every evening and yet still have time to argue with random strangers on here for hours in end about climate change, Harry and Meghan, whether anyone over a size 12 should be allowed to wear swimwear and why their dog should take priority over humans in any Michelin star restaurant

BigFloppa · 24/07/2023 22:36

I saw a post the other day where someone was asking if her sporty 6ft tall 14 stone daughter was over weight. Cue people rushing to tell her that her daughter was very very over weight and that they were all 12ft tall and weighed 4 stones and considered themselves overweight.

Sporty339 · 24/07/2023 22:41

Some of the threads about diets are concerning, they're basically implying that anyone who eats more than 2 ryvitas a day is some sort of grotesque greedy pig. There should be more moderation on those threads.
