Things on MNs that are confusing?

Just curious if anyone else wonders about these things:

  1. DP/DH with super outing hobby - what are these hobbies, naked trampoline tennis?

  2. DP/DH with super stressful job - what is it? Is it a known stressful job or is DP/DP just describing it as that? Anyone ever consider DH is incompetent or has been over promoted?

  3. The notion of a "posh wank" - it doesn't exist, it's a lie told by men caught cheating. Do people really believe it's a real thing?

If you aren't in a relationship with someone who was born on the exact same date/month/year as you you're obviously some kind of sexual deviant. Age gaps are gross and make everyone feel sick.

This 😂😂

No I mean confused by. If I mean critical, I would have said it critical.

I was hoping that people who have a DH who had an "outing hobby" would explain well yes, my former used to play "blind folded judo" under a NC or something. I wanted to know what the hobbies are, or the super stressful job is.

I'm more confused that critical.

Ok great, but my post (or my seconding of a pp's post) was aimed at the people who use "confused by" as a passive-aggressive way of criticising something.

TraumaSurvivor · 24/07/2023 15:25

I've always pondered the "outing hobby" thing myself. It's quite entertaining coming up with ideas. So far I've considered the outing activity might be:

nude wrestling

Naked rambling

Learning to play the Timpani or the nose flute or double bass or something

Naked drag racing

Making collages out of macaroni and showing them on IG

part time stripper?

(why are so many of these involving being scantily clad? I don't know!)

ChiefWiggumsBoy · 24/07/2023 15:29

"Posh wanks" were what the boys at my school did when they'd dared each other to buy johnnies at the chemist and then didn't know what to do with them because they were 13.

I really don't understand how using contraceptives is a posh thing, though ?

any posh people who can enlighten us?

Because condoms cost more money than using tissues/a sock

Ah, I see, thank you for enlightening me! The price of condoms is shocking these days!

"My son is 7ft 3" and I am teeny tiny next to him teehee".

I LOVE the name posts like "What should I name DD - Jasmine or Sarah" and the replies are just lists of other totally random names that bear zero resemblance to either name, and ALWAYS (for the girls) include the fucking dreadful Ottilie. "Torn between James and Peter for DS" "What about Hugo/Fenton/Silas/Apollo"

Applescruffle · 24/07/2023 16:34

Ottilie??!!

I've never heard this! Is it a girl's name?

I always assumed it was a bit posh because you didn’t get spunk all over your hand. Saves having to wash it

It is. Not often used these days. I quite like it, but to each their own.

People who say “I’ve got 2/3/4 degrees” as evidence of intelligence. If they’ve got 3/4 different undergrads that was probably just a massive waste of time and doesn’t make them more intelligent than someone with one. If they mean BA/MA/ doctorate why don’t they just say “I’ve got a PhD” which is what people say in real life- just mention the highest qualification.

TBF, I think they're bemoaning the time and money and general slog that went into their education and look how little they still earn

I hear it a lot IRL, because in my current workplace a lot of people have two masters.

Studying is one of my hobbies, especially as my work will subsidise it. On my third undergrad degree at the moment. Don't think it makes me more intelligent than anyone else, though!

Sporty339 · 24/07/2023 17:06

Every other person has an incredibly overbearing MIL who turns up at the drop of a hat and stays uninvited for 7 weeks at a time without lifting a finger.

SamW98 · 24/07/2023 17:18

That people start threads on AIBU moaning about a situation involving their partner/friend/mother/in-laws/ Doris at work and ask how they should deal with it when in 99.99% of cases, it could have been sorted with a 2 minute conversation rather than a week long argument amongst randoms on the internet

Poster: "I said a polite 'good morning' to a woman who lives over the road once and now she has started coming out of her house every time I go for a walk and has started to join me on my walk every single time. She also turns up at my local coffee shop every time I'm there and sits down at my table and talks to me even though I'm reading a book or trying to get some work done. She texts me 100 times a day and cries whenever she sees me with a friend and wants to know why she wasn't invited. I have told her to leave me alone several times and she won't. Last week we were on holiday and when we arrived she was hiding in the boot of the car with her luggage, expecting to share our accommodation. She has twice tried to kidnap my child and I regularly find her in my home, wearing my underwear and using my toothbrush. What can I do?"

Mumsnet: "She's clearly just lonely! You're being really mean. You might be the only person she speaks to each day! Poor woman. If it's a bit much for you, maybe you could agree some boundaries whereby you only see her on four afternoons a week, and arrange a separate holiday with her so that she doesn't have to come with you on your family trip? Does she have ASD? My DD has ASD and it's so hurtful when people don't want to be friends with her. You are a monster."

🤣🤣🤣

Along with a few posters giving the always helpful reply: “no is a complete sentence”.

Where on earth do you work that will subsidise multiple undergrad degrees?!

YES.

Similarly, when OP asks for traditional names and Arlo is always offered. A name that has had a resurgence in the last few years and is now very popular but is definitely not a traditional name like James, Edward, Michael.

At an independent school. It's distance learning so not crazily expensive, and they're all relevant to things I teach. (It comes from their CPD budget.)

PhotoDad · 24/07/2023 17:43

That last post was for @AngryBirdsNoMore, sorry for the lack of tag.

The lack of acceptance and understanding of diversity. This thread is a prime example.

The love for Uniqlo on the S&B board. Difference is I know that's a "me" thing... its just something "I" don't understand.

Do you know, the love for Uniqlo inspired me to give Uniqlo a try for the first time in years, and I was very pleasantly surprised!

I don’t understand the Hush worship however. It’s recommended on every thread. I don’t get it

Incredible perk! Good on you for making the most of it, teaching is a bloody hard profession.

NoImnotcalledIgglePiggle · 24/07/2023 17:50

The current thread about the shorts is definitely baffling.

So much hate and vitriol for a perfectly ordinary pair of shorts.

People saying they are vile and ugly and "definitely from the girl's section" (they aren't!)

The OPs son is 4 FFS.

Also comments about restricting blood flow (again, they aren't!).

MN is usually fairly rational about "gendered" clothing but this thread seems to be the exception.

I know, right? I probably shouldn't say this, but another bonus is that when I'm being encouraged to go on some pointless course or sit on some Working Party, I can quite correctly say, "Sorry, I'm busy with these academic modules you're paying me to do."

My own error just now is also something which annoys me; a poster who says something without quoting or tagging, and so you have no idea which of the 300 posts it's replying to!
