Skinny shaming

Bobski123 · 10/07/2023 20:40

I was doing some moving and handling training for part of my job. The trainer required a volunteer, I offered and she said "Oh no not you, you're far too skinny."
She then chose a larger lady.
I get it's supposed to be some sort of compliment because being thin is 'desirable'.
However if she'd said "Not you, you're far too fat." She'd possibly be out of a job by now.
However it's ok to say the opposite.
I should've responded really.
It's like that meme going around with a picture of Sophia Loren and the caption "I'd rather eat pizza and drink wine than be a size 0."
A few of my colleagues posted it and I just think, yawn. They aren't mutually exclusive, ok, size 0 is very small but the point is you can enjoy pizza, wine whatever and still remain slim. I'm just over it.

I’m pretty skinny (BMI in the teens, lanky distance runner build), though not the sort of skinny people aspire to, I’ve no fat on my face and no real shape 😂 therefore I’d don’t seem to get comments from other women.

Making comments on people’s appearance isn’t nice but it’s not really comparable to the discrimination fat people face, being judged just for existing in a bigger body, and facing often very poor treatment by medical professionals etc

At their height they're clinically overweight/obese ..... That's irrelevant to their character and that's all I'm interested in.

I don't need men whose ideal/standard is clinically obese though - commenting on my weight/figure however.

To add to that - the first comment was a piece of unfiltered verbal diarrhea/outburst ... The second was quite aggressive and basically suggesting I don't eat "enough" and should "eat something".

I eat plenty.

I don't need to eat to get up to a side that would be clinically obese for my height be wise of his fucked up perceptions.

Also v embarrassing for a young woman at a male dominated sport.

All the skinny people complaining should be forced to wear a Susan Boyle suit for a month.

I'm fat and think you're talking rubbish.

Ah ok, I didn't realise you knew their height/weight ratio as well as their dress size.

Doesn’t really matter, as long as someone makes a nasty comment it’s irrelevant what their personal motivation behind the comment is.

It is quite relevant. I think what you mean is, it isn’t justifiable to pass comment. On which we agree.

Nobody should be made to feel shit about themselves for just existing at the size they are.

Beezknees · 10/07/2023 21:43

HunterHearstHelmsley · 10/07/2023 21:34

The sizes mentioned aren't fat.

I'm a size 12/14 and I'm fat. My BMI is in the overweight category and I look pregnant a lot of the time. Clothes sizes don't really mean much these days.

SemperIdem · 10/07/2023 21:43

HunterHearstHelmsley · 10/07/2023 21:39

14 and 16 definitely aren't. 18 may be straying into overweight, but they're not fat, no.

Unless they are very tall indeed, they will be fat.

Ah yeah it takes a master's degree in medicine to work out that people your height, who are very obviously over the range limit for your height, are clinically obese.

TheoTheopolis23 · 10/07/2023 21:45

*weight range limit

I'm fat and think you're talking rubbish.

I've been fat in the past. I've received more comments when I'm slimmer.

A favourite being - don't lose anymore weight. You look ridiculous.

The amount of "ahh, you're eating a salad, you skinny bitch" comments I've heard is astounding. I'm not even skinny, I'm a big size 10 (closer to 12). It would be massively unacceptable to day "ahh, you're eating another sausage roll, you fat bitch".

It is inappropriate and unacceptable to comment on anyone's weight/size. It doesn't matter if you're thin or fat (I hated typing thin or fat). It is no one else's business.

Thin shaming feels shit. Fat shaming feels shit. Let's just stop shaming each other for our size, shape, diet. It doesn't matter what size someone is.

No one who comments on any of that has a right to demand they don't get the same in response.

I think you did it because they are fat and you secretly feel superior but are trying to dress it up as a 'we've lost sight of a healthy weight' thing.

Do you feel secretly superior to women who are "fat"?

I'm wonder where you'd get something like that from. I can only imagine projection.

Are you being deliberately obtuse? I was agreeing with you.

Apologies. I thought you were being reasonable but you were actually being unkind.

I'm not a tiny teeny - that's my whole fucking point.

AndIKnewYouMeantIt · 10/07/2023 21:50

There definitely are skinny memes! Have you never seen the Kate Moss "Nothing tastes as good as skinny feels" one?

I found that as well interestingly. I was thin when I was younger. I got teased at secondary school for having no boobs.

I've been fat now for about 4 years and I've had one negative comment that I can remember from some drunk bloke on a night out.

There’s a unique kind of unpleasantness directed towards people generally, but in particular women, who lose/gain a lot of weight.

I’ve always been the same sort of size but my mum has yoyo’d throughout her life and I have noticed that people feel very free to comment on her weight, regardless of what size she is. This has been true of others I’ve known who are similar. Perhaps because weight loss/gain is something that is so visible after a certain point so people feel it is their right to comment?

NomDe · 10/07/2023 21:53

MrsTerryPratchett · 10/07/2023 20:47

There'll never be a meme saying 'I'd rather live on lettuce and water than be a size 20."

Because the entire weight of the media is set up that way, you don't need memes.

No one should comment but there is massive evidence that thinner people get treated better most of the time. It's all a bit, "my diamond shoes are uncomfortable".

No, BS.

If you’re not applying the same rules to everyone then you’re undermining the whole code of ‘don’t comment on people’s bodies’ for everyone.

It’s playing into the exact same BS that an overweight person contends with. Taking aim at a different target just legitimises judging or discriminating on the basis of body shape in general.

The message should be that people’s body and appearance is no-one else’s business, no exceptions.

Anything else is just reinforcing the same crap (including our own internalised feelings about weight) already at play.

You are wrong.

Bag of bones is being deliberately cruel. Fat cunt is deliberately cruel.

Maybe just the fat part needs to be removed in your case, I don't know.

I thought you were being sarcastic lol.

I am not and have intended to be unkind at any point.

I don't care what people's weight or figures are , I care how they are as people.

Whether they are big, small, fat, skinny, lost weight, put in weight - I keep my mouth shut and say fuck all. It's superficial shit

I don't see why I should - at the middle of my heights weight range - have to deal with their husbands commenting on my figure and roaring at me to "eat something!!! " however.
