Skinny shaming

Bobski123 · 10/07/2023 20:40

I was doing some moving and handling training for part of my job. The trainer required a volunteer, I offered and she said "Oh no not you, you're far too skinny."
She then chose a larger lady.
I get it's supposed to be some sort of compliment because being thin is 'desirable'.
However if she'd said "Not you, you're far too fat." She'd possibly be out of a job by now.
However it's ok to say the opposite.
I should've responded really.
It's like that meme going around with a picture of Sophia Loren and the caption "I'd rather eat pizza and drink wine than be a size 0."
A few of my colleagues posted it and I just think, yawn. They aren't mutually exclusive, ok, size 0 is very small but the point is you can enjoy pizza, wine whatever and still remain slim. I'm just over it.

So rude. I eat one meal a day, intermittent fasting. I don't eat 2000 calories in that meal....which is probably really disappointing for you as you won't be able to make any sneering, rude remarks about what a greedy cow I must be.

what are you talking about?

2000 calories is the daily recommended intake for women – so if someone was eating all their calories in one meal for the purposes of intermittent fasting – this would be the number of calories in that meal. Intermittent fasting can be really good for the body (encouraging autophagy, for eg) and most people I know who do it consume exactly the same amount of food each day as before but within a smaller window of say 3 meals in an 8 hour window.

Sorry but i think you have serious issues.

I’ve found your last few posts very saddening and i think your thinking around food, weight and eating is very distorted. I am really sorry you feel this way. You’re projecting these horrible thoughts onto other people, but it’s you who thinks this way, not everyone else. You are being very hard on yourself and others.

I understood from your post you meant you were eating a single normal-sized meal each day, which doesn’t sound healthy at all.

Comedycook · 15/07/2023 14:48

They put calories on restaurant menus now don't they...I've seen main courses that are over 1000 calories, throw in some bread on the table, a glass of wine, a juice or a coffee...you can easily reach 2000. But on omad, I don't eat anywhere near 2000 calories.

But the general gist of this thread is you're a terrible person if you're fat. You're a terrible person if you're not fat but have to moderate your eating to achieve that. The only way you are an acceptable, moral human being is if you are thin but eat loads. Then you're fine.

2000 calories can easily be a burger, chips and a milkshake, it's not impossible

True, definitely not impossible! I know I would feel knackered if I had a massive meal like that during the day but everyone’s different!

This thread is full of unpleasant comments..I can't be bothered to trawl back to find the passive aggressive head tilt...oh I thought overweight people loved being overweight? Or oh it's incredibly hard to put on weight for slim people. Its really tiresome because what those posters clearly want to say is unpleasant comments about fat people but they know it's socially unacceptable so dress it up.

Thanks for demonstrating exactly what I mean with this sly comment

Hardly a shocking revelation, I'm surprised the poster has never heard of people eating one meal a day🙄

I really haven’t. I’ve heard of intermittent fasting but the people I know who do it eat between certain hours. Not just one meal. They typically don’t eat between 6pm and 10am.

I’ve also have a friend that does something like eat what they like 2-3 three days then eat carefully the other days of the week.

Also know people that do shakes for a meal or two while trying to reduce then a normal dinner.

I’ve heard of all kinds of things, but eating only one meal a day, no. It sounds very unhealthy to me and unlikely to be sustainable.

AliceOlive · 15/07/2023 15:04

And I mean unhealthy because your body needs more energy during the day than you can get from one meal, no matter the size of the meal.

Your brain needs more glycogen. Your muscles need more protein.

Comedycook · 15/07/2023 15:04

Well the only time my BMI has ever been in the normal range is when I've eaten one meal a day. It sucks.

Believe whatever you want to believe 🤷🏻

I wasn’t even interacting with you and in fact it is you who's responded aggressively to my post. I could have ignored you (which would have been fair given the aggressive, rude way you've spoken to me) but on the off chance you really did misunderstand, i’ve taken the time to ensure you do understand what was meant, particularly as some of your posts have been quite alarming.

You’re determined to read the same specific thing into every post, but that’s on you.

Re ‘the theme of the thread’, the original theme was actually that body shaming is BS – and in fact it is you who has been aggressive for pages and pages about other people.

I had thought you seemed unpleasant and closed to discussion, then seeing some of your more recent posts I thought actually you seem to be coming from somewhere quite dark and vulnerable.

It seems that the only acceptable response to anything you say is full and unequivocal agreement. You’re not open to or interested in anyone else’s point of view. It would be fairly unusual if every single person thought in exactly the same way don’t you think? Just because you have a certain way of thinking about something, doesn’t mean everyone does. But you have no interest in understanding anyone else’s viewpoint. 🤷🏻

I would just forget bmi. It’s a very generalised measure and everybody is different. What is healthy for one person may be unhealthy for someone else.

bmi doesn’t take into account build and other factors. It’s a very rough tool.

The main thing is just eating & living healthily and giving your body what it needs (imo). If you’re doing this and you’re outside of bmi (and in the absence of illness), then it’s the bmi chart that’s wrong.

That sounds so difficult. But I would worry that you are causing your body more stress by doing this.

I am of the opinion that three healthy meals are best. Or grazing all day on things you like that are good for you. Keeping your body from ever getting really really hungry and keep your blood sugar stable. I read “The Zone” years ago and it just makes so much sense.

IAmAnIdiot123 · 15/07/2023 17:15

As someone who has been 22 stone pushing a size 30 and 10 stone in a comfy size 10, I can honestly say I have never received negetive comments either way. It can't just be the company I keep as I haven't experienced it from strangers either.

What I have found, is being smaller during pregnancy has attracted a few shitty comments. When I was larger no one commented on my bump. This time round I have had gems such as 'you're due in a week? I thought you were only 4 months!' and 'ooh your bump is way too small for that far along'.

I am having growth scans (not relating to my weight) and the baby is growing nicely, they were 6.5lbs at 36 weeks. I can assure you, my baby is absolutely fine and I wish you would stop commenting. Unless you are my midwife, or a dr your opinion is unwanted!

Beastieboys · 02/10/2023 01:22

I used to be a size 16/18 , I am 5'8" so not exceptionally tall and was 10st 2lb but was well stacked on top and was curvy.....so was I fat????

I do OMAD.
I've always been slim, but when I started steroids (cancer treatment and heart problems) and mirtazapine thrown in the mix, I felt my metabolism change almost overnight.

For me to maintain my 'normal' baseline weight I have to do OMAD for 4 days out of 7.

I don't get overly hungry anymore and I'm used to it. The days where I relax I still can't eat 3 meals a day. But I have so much more concentration now, and I don't get sluggish during the day. By the time dinner comes around I am very hungry, but I don't get that horrible blood sugar spike / drop anymore.

On the days I do OMAD I still have tea / coffee (with milk and sweetener!) and the odd smoothie.

I really like it. I fall into doing fasting and OMAD at the same time. As you said, fasting can be so good for you.
I can now happily take my medication and not worry about putting on weight. The first week was hard. Really hard. (Steroids and mirtazapine make you ravenous) so I had to try and not eat with my normal hunger, with added medication hunger on top. It was insanely difficult, but it's so, so worth it.

Got myself in a lovely routine now, Monday Tuesday Thursday and Friday OMAD / fasting. Wednesday, sat and sun, I relax and get what I like. (This can include pizza / takeaway)

I've been doing it for 2 years now, and the day that comes when I'm off the meds, I'll probably carry it on.

I'm 29, 5'4 and 9 stone on the nose.
(I went up to 10.5 stone in 2 weeks when I first started the meds)

It's notoriously hard to lose weight on mirtazapine and steroids. It's the only thing that's worked.
