Skinny shaming

Bobski123 · 10/07/2023 20:40

I was doing some moving and handling training for part of my job. The trainer required a volunteer, I offered and she said "Oh no not you, you're far too skinny."
She then chose a larger lady.
I get it's supposed to be some sort of compliment because being thin is 'desirable'.
However if she'd said "Not you, you're far too fat." She'd possibly be out of a job by now.
However it's ok to say the opposite.
I should've responded really.
It's like that meme going around with a picture of Sophia Loren and the caption "I'd rather eat pizza and drink wine than be a size 0."
A few of my colleagues posted it and I just think, yawn. They aren't mutually exclusive, ok, size 0 is very small but the point is you can enjoy pizza, wine whatever and still remain slim. I'm just over it.

In reality, the people on here who claim to have been offended (bar the genuinely underweight ones) over various comments are probably just using this thread to tell everyone that they're not fat and if only fat people ate less, they wouldn't be fat anymore. Classic mumsnet.

Do you really believe this? I find it a rather shocking suggestion.

I don't believe that for a second unless you've not been here long. 'Shocking' 😆 also classic mumsnet.

I don’t know anyone that I think would go online and brag to a bunch of strangers. Would you?

Finlesswonder · 12/07/2023 15:20

@Goldenbear
Maybe Peter Crouch is naturally thin hard to tell really as he obviously has to do lots of exercise for his job. Why would you think he eats lettuce, I doubt it very much.
Aaaand whoosh

WorldCuppa · 12/07/2023 15:31

@Comedycook
just how there are thin women out there who eat cheeseburgers, drink beer and don't do any exercise.
it’s really simple. If you consume more calories than you expend you put on weight. If you live in a calories deficit you’ll lose weight. Isn’t that hard.

Awww thanks for the advice... absolutely ground breaking.

Wow this thread is really showing who the absolute arseholes are around here.

I was bullied for 4 years for being too thin. I was followed after lunch to see if I was going to throw up and taunted so badly I had no confidence left.

What because we have an opinion and back it up with statistics. I'm sure there are many out there who were bullied for being fat as well I mean at my age much more likely so a child in 80s teenager in 90s. They are likely to say that those giving weight loss advice and not accepting of how people come to be overweight are also arseholes.

I actually think it is really unhelpful to those with disordered eating to read how easy it is to be very thin. They will feel worse about their failure to do so- it's unhealthy propaganda that people love pushing on Mumsnet.

Yep! I’ve said upthread that the real enemy here is the objectification of women’s bodies!

”I Don’t like skinny women, I want a girl with tits and an arse”
”I Don’t like fat women, they’re all lazy”

The ‘ideal’ is probably only representative of a tiny, tiny part of the population. Most of us fall out of the ‘perfect body’ perpetuated by society. No amount of eating more would make my chest bigger. No amount of losing weight will make your waist to hip ratio what society wants it to be if you’re not built that way. Some of us are taller than the ideal, some of us shorter. It doesn’t matter which is easier to achieve, which is more attainable, or which comments are more hurtful!

The focus should be on HEALTH - mental and physical, and not size or shape.

Yes exactly. I have been thin. I ate one meal a day to stay like that...I really really restricted my eating and was hungry a lot of the time. When people then say, oh I eat loads and don't put on weight, what they are actually saying is if you are any bigger than me you must be a gluttonous heffer

Wow… they are really not.

Most people understand that everyone has a different body and how their own body works may be completely different to someone else’s.

Eating one meal a day to control weight is really extreme.

I kind of do that. Intermittent fasting is very common and not unhealthy if fine right.

Stop putting words in people’s mouths based on your own insecurities though. You seem obsessed with the idea that because you only had one meal a day and had to be super controlling therefore everyone else who is skinny is also insanely controlling and restrictive. When the reality is they don’t all do that, plenty of people naturally eat within their normal range and have an active lifestyle which maintains a healthy weight. They don’t care what you eat, they don’t care what other people eat. They aren’t fixated on it.

Intermittent fasting is just eating your meals for the day within a certain time window (as I’m sure you know!). It doesn’t in and of itself involve restricting calories.

That being said, I’d also say that eating 2000 calories (ie your entire daily intake) in one sitting is extreme and unusual too!

So rude. I eat one meal a day, intermittent fasting. I don't eat 2000 calories in that meal....which is probably really disappointing for you as you won't be able to make any sneering, rude remarks about what a greedy cow I must be.

AliceOlive · 15/07/2023 14:04

I would not be able to manage with one meal a day. Doesn’t it cause your blood sugar to spike and then drop? Do you feel good eating this way?

Hardly a shocking revelation, I'm surprised the poster has never heard of people eating one meal a day🙄

Bobski123 · 15/07/2023 14:41

2000 calories can easily be a burger, chips and a milkshake, it's not impossible
