Short hair

Does anybody feel that they don't see many women with short hair? Particularly younger women. I can think of 2 females out of many who've got a pixie cut, but the vast majority of women I know have at least a long bob.
I currently have a short bob, but I just find it bland, flat and uninspiring.
I'm thinking of going for a pixie cut, I know it's just hair and will grow back. Men often seem to prefer longer hair, not all but generally, I guess it's associated with being 'feminine'.

My best friend has always had short hair. Suits her so much! But she's the only person I know with that style.

PinkBuffalo · 09/07/2023 19:54

I have had very short hair about 10 years now
Helps me keep independent cos I have trouble brushing it etc when it is longer

MotherofGorgons · 09/07/2023 19:55

Young women these days all have very long hair.

BunnySneezes · 09/07/2023 19:56

I've never felt more feminine than with my short hair.

Diversion · 09/07/2023 19:57

I have had short hair for 25 years, the thought of spending hours drying, straightening and styling long hair horrifies me. I wash mine, towel dry it, comb it through and stick on some gel .... done

TeenDivided · 09/07/2023 19:58

In the 50+ demographic short hair is far more prevalent. We grew up with all sorts or hairstyles, not like the homogeneous long hair that girls have these days.

GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal · 09/07/2023 19:59

My 11 year old DD got her waist-length hair cropped to a no.2 a few months ago, and I've had my hair very short over the years, though it's long atm. But yes, it is more unusual now.

When my hair is long I don't do anything with it - just a quick wash and condition every few days. I can twist it up into a bun after washing and take it down later and it'll be lovely and wavy.

I recently had a shorter cut (not as short as yours by the sound of it) and had to get a round brush to style it whilst blow drying, and spray on stuff to stop the blow drying damage/fluffiness... Leaving it to dry naturally and/or sleeping on it resulted in odd bits of hair sticking out or curling oddly. So high maintenance, I'm glad it's starting to grow out!

Lykkeli · 09/07/2023 20:08

Yes, having worked in schools I totally agree. Probably 1 girl out of every 20 has short hair.

Every single one of DD's friends has long hair. In fact I can only think of one person in my peer group with short hair. Everyone has long hair.

I find it much easier to manage as I got into the habit of only going to the hairdressers a couple of times a year (if that) and just leave my (wavy) hair to air dry.

Short hair is also quite hard to pull off, even for very pretty women. Penny from Big Bang Theory and Lucy from Not Going Out both looked ordinary when they cut their hair (IMO).

mathanxiety · 09/07/2023 20:22

It costs a small fortune to keep short hair short. Long hair otoh you can often trim yourself. Or get your mother to do it using the kitchen shears Grin

soakinboakin · 09/07/2023 20:55

It's just the fashion... long hair, long eyelashes, tiny waists. Kardashian style

msmonstera · 09/07/2023 20:57

I have thick, wavy hair and I keep it short. It's a chin length. It suits me but now I think about it, nearly all of my women friends have long hair. If mine grew long it would be some kind of hedge so happy to be an outlier!

Lesina · 09/07/2023 20:58

Have had short hair for 30 years. Love it. Can wash it twice a day. Feel dirty with long hair. It’s nasty.

My long hair takes 10 minutes, not hours. I’m lucky that’s its naturally poker straight and shiny. I rough dry and brush it then leave it as it’s done.

Soubriquet · 09/07/2023 21:03

I personally don’t like short hair. I never have. I’ve always had it long.

My mum has always had it short. That’s her choice just as my hair is my choice.

Dd has hers long but she completely understands that it’s her choice to cut it short or not

nosepierce · 09/07/2023 21:07

i think it's because longer hair is usually more flattering on most women and is more versatile.

i had short hair in my late teens and it looked awful on me. i had a moon face with no nice or defined nose/lips/eyebrows or other features. it might suit some people but my opinion is it suits few.

PureLife89 · 09/07/2023 21:07

I think women with short hair look like young boys

Lykkeli · 09/07/2023 21:08

Young boys ? Ouch.. I think you're going to offend a few people on here!

I have a pixie cut. Love it, it's so easy to style and incredibly practical. As much as I liked the look of myself with longer hair, the grooming side of things was more time consuming than I wanted, so I went for the chop.

DramaAlpaca · 09/07/2023 21:12

I've always had short hair. It's never been below my shoulders and it's almost always much shorter than that. I'm currently rocking a longish pixie and it really suits me - I look and feel very feminine, thank you very much.

GloriousSludge · 09/07/2023 21:12

I have very short hair. Short enough that my dds say they can’t have it that short as it would be taken as a social signal they don’t want to give.

I wash it every few days and give it a quick brush, it’s very low maintenance but does need a trim every 6 weeks.

Iheartmysmart · 09/07/2023 21:14

My hair is about an inch long all over but hopefully my 34HH boobs stop me looking like a boy 🤔

Lykkeli · 09/07/2023 21:15

Just to clarify, I was trying to say that some men seem to think it's more 'feminine' but I don't, and it certainly doesn't make women look like boys/men

Funnily enough, with the exception of the gel, that's what I do with my long hair.
