Not everyone buys SUV's to show off or feel flashy- we have one as have a giant dog who would not fit in a smaller car (we take him via car for long walks on the weekend, when we go on camping holidays etc). They are also more convenient in rural areas and for older family members who struggle to get in lower, smaller cars. YABVU- shall we ban lorries, planes and buses too?

Really?

My daughter's great dane fitted in to a VW golf. He just lay down and went to sleep for long journeys.

I daresay a much bigger car would have given him room to stretch out, but he didn't need it.

Why are people so dense!! Nobody is saying ban all cars because there have been accidents

Of course we should ban CERTAIN types of cars in urban environments.

Of course we should ban CERTAIN breeds of dogs in urban environments

Of course we should ban CERTAIN types of guns for some people.

And why shouldn't laws be changed after an incident such as this, it's not a knee-jerk reaction, it's a " let this not happen again" reaction.

But @Lemonade84 has a big dog!

Won't somebody think of that? They might have to take it for walks in the local area! OMG!!! The suffering!

(He was a BIG dane, too. Just under 14 stones)

WiseUpJanetWeiss · 07/07/2023 14:58

I see so many of these enormous SUVs that are literally just used for the school run

How do you know they are only ever used for the school run?

Not my problem.

You got yourself into this situation.

And in one fell swoop, you threw a hand grenade into your argument. 🤦🏼‍♀️

Daffodil91 · 07/07/2023 14:59

YANBU - cars this size are unnecessary and dangerous. Not to mention the environmental impact.

VenAqui · 07/07/2023 15:02

The SIZE of that car. Nobody needs a car that size, don’t care who you are.

We managed for years without them.

Been huge upsurge in them recently. They're just fashionable clit-extensions in most cases where I live.

We should be ensuring H&S risk assessment for all schools. Including private schools. It's clearly a freak accident, but the fact that it was merely wooden fencing would have been picked up as a 'risk' in a retail environment and people would not have been allowed to congregate behind it until sorted. All schools/parks near roads should have crash barriers.

People slam H&S officers. but this is definitely a 'lesson needs to be learnt' area.

Agree though that no one needs one of these awful cars - but I am biased as one cunt killed my cat in one of these doing 50mph down our 20mph road.

so YANBU.

I need my massive, fuck-off car. I also need to work in London.

They will never ban ‘large vehicles’. They may tax, but they’ll never ban. And it’s ludicrous to suggest it.

Thosepeskyseagulls · 07/07/2023 14:33

Hand guns are literally just for killing people.

I think the producers of hand guns wouldn’t be able to sell their products if that was the case.

if you were right, only police and soldiers would be able to buy them.

handguns are often used in sport.

OP do you have anything to actually say that informs the debate or did you come here to shout at everyone?

@Lemonade84 also mentioned using their car for camping trips

But hey just latch on to the dog argument?

I drive a Dacia Duster (such a prestige fancy car) because we camp a lot - often with 2 tents and equipment - also drive to Europe for self catering holidays and pack a lot of stuff. I'm sure that is also my problem - actually it's my choice and I'm happy with it.

What do you drive?

Why? Assuming it's a mobility issue.

If you need it so badly, I'm assuming that you'd be happy to take a higher driving test, get regular medicals and be banned from certain roads?

Electric cars were invented to save the car industry, not the environment. They are worse for brake and tyre emissions than a normal car due to the extra weight. The batteries are worse for the environment. Their lifetime carbon footprint is probably higher than a diesel car. They are more dangerous to pedestrians. Tesla's are huge and basically SUV's with a slightly different body shape. If you want an electric vehicle in a city go for an e bike or a golf buggy type thing.

We ought to be having a national conversation about the weight of electric cars.

We've been told that some of our bridges won't bear the weight of them, and already we are seeing issues with road surfacing.

I really despair at how ill thought out things are these days, just to placate a lobby that refuses to think things through properly.

Nobody went camping before SUVs

Yes we did in the 70's - kids sat on laps of adults to make room for all the stuff piled up in the boot, back seat etc - much safer

Kids also sat in the back of estate cars waving at the cars behind - much safer than everyone having a seat and a seat belt.

what do you drive?

Mosaic123 · 07/07/2023 15:13

Such a sad thing but surely the reason she drove off the road is important? Being on medication or I'll when she shouldn't have driven, drunk or confused or stressed?

Sadly, a slightly smaller car probably wouldn't have made much difference.

Should the school's fences be strong crash barriers if there is potential danger from cars?

It is important to know more before considering banning large cars.

DataNotLore · 07/07/2023 15:14

No- it's not possible to camp without an SUV.

I drive but not a huge amount as I commute to work 2 days a week.

I’ve had run ins and near misses with 4x4s (Chelsea tractors) basically men and women drivers who either don’t know how to drive a large vehicle in a small road (very common, don’t pull in when not their right of way etc), my best friend who used to drive for her work as a site auditor has also had run ins with them, especially women drivers.

I know the area and school fairly well as I used to work there for 5-6 years. The number of these vehicles has increased in previous years but was an accident waiting to happen.

Most of the mums I know who do drive SUVs are normal school mums, one drives a space cruiser, SIL drives a Vauxhall corsa. Lots of mums I speak to say they like the height and width of the vehicle, it feels more secure than a smaller car. That’s if they can be bothered to drive it properly!

Of course I would, I do actually have various enhancements due to relocating animals in large trucks. However, I have it because I live rurally, up a hill, on a farm. I work in central London a lot of the time. (Not farming, obviously).

Rural life equates to large animals, less than ideal weather conditions and a necessity to have a capable vehicle. My smallest ‘car’ has a winch. My largest is a combine.

I drive the ‘small’ one into town a few times a month, where I park it underground (across 1.5 spaces but hey, I pay for them). I use public transport while navigating the city but I drive the car in and out. And that is how it shall remain.

OP posts:
Gertrudetheadelie · 07/07/2023 15:16

My grandparents had a Land Rover for camping in the 60s/70s.

Like I say, it's a pity that SUVs are often the only option now for meeting some needs. Ford are ceasing production of the Fiesta so the market is moving away from small cars, which leaves less and less choice.
