No, anyone can drive a van on a standard license

People me even have grandfather rights to drive up to 7.5 tonne GVW lorries.

Anyone with a car licence can drive a Van up to 3.5 tonne GVW (which the vast majority are).

We spell licence (the noun) with a C in the UK BTW.

@DataNotLore

So I live in a very rural area for obvious reason I need a 4x4 estate. I also am required to carry a lot of equipment with me as part of my job and a majority of the time I need to visit urban areas like Wimbledon.

So what do you suggest I do?

Get a grip. 🙄

NotTerfNorCis · 07/07/2023 14:08

Can't help noticing how the Mail keeps referring to a 'woman driver'. If it'd been a man, it would have been 'driver'. In fact I've never heard the phrase 'man driver'.

Riapia · 07/07/2023 14:09

Ban any type of vehicle that has ever been involved in a fatal accident.
Make everybody go on foot.
Is that the answer OP.

Not my problem.

You got yourself into this situation.

Well done for posting a study from the USA that includes a lot of US data.
The USA has (as that article points out) very different (much worse) pedestrian safety testing regime. Many of the models of cars in the study aren't sold in the UK - in some cases because they wouldn't be allowed on general sale.

In any case, the science isn't really in dispute.

The knee-jerk "ban them all" response is what's being questioned. The practical details of how that would work would be a start and would indicate some thought.

Pinklagoon · 07/07/2023 14:12

@DataNotLore Yesterdays incident is no my problem either. I have the gravest sympathy and condolences for the families involved. But I'm not going to change my life for it.

Which is exactly why we need a change in the law.

I'm tired of seeing massive cars bouncing on and off the pavement next to small children on the school run. It's some sort of sick cycle, make going places on foot intimidating so that more pedestrian-unfriendly cars get bought. Then we all wonder why people are getting fat!

What exactly are you proposing and how would it have prevented the events of yesterday?

No we don't sorry, knee jerk reactions are exactly the wrong time to change laws.

The law wont be changing and cars are going to get bigger with more electric cars becoming more common. Then you will have silent 2.5 tonne tanks running people over all over the shop

Goldbar · 07/07/2023 14:16

YANBU. The more of these vehicles there are about, the more people especially children will be killed on the roads.

But just as the US has its "guns don't kill, bad people do" brigade, you'll get the "SUVs don't kill, bad drivers do" crew out in force on this thread.

The truth is, the less guns and SUVs about, the safer we all are collectively.

But many people don't really give a damn about children's safety and the collective good when weighed against their own ego/convenience.

Justputitdown · 07/07/2023 14:17

Fightyouforthatpie · 07/07/2023 13:56

How is this thread full of hate? It simply points out SUVs are dangerous and largely unnecessary in urban environments.

Pinklagoon · 07/07/2023 14:18

@Goldbar The old gun debate, sorry guns have one design and use to kill, cars do not.

Stop with the silly comparisons.

onefinemess · 07/07/2023 14:18

OP, if we were to take your suggestion to its logical conclusion then we would ban everything that posed even the slightest danger.

Should we ban planes just because some have crashed?

Should we ban busses just because some of them have crashed and killed or injured people?

Should we ban dogs because some of them have killed people?

Should we ban cars because some have killed or injured people?

A speeding motorist in a fiesta could have done just as much damage as that 4x4.

A new brand new environmentally friendly, vegan friendly, just stop oil endorsed EV, like a Tesla, can weigh in excess of 2 tons, and would have ploughed through that fence in the same manner as that 4x4. It's not the physical dimensions of the vehicle which caused those tragic injuries and deaths, it was the kinetic energy of the mass of the vehicle, moving at speed.

I understand your angry, but the 4x4 didn't cause that crash, the driver did. And a regular EV, which would be seen as acceptable to you, would weigh just as much, if not more that that 4x4.

missmollygreen · 07/07/2023 14:04

Its a total knee jerk reaction though.
The type of car isnt the problem, its drivers not paying attention.

Say there had been a ban on SUVs last year, the driver would have been driving an estate car instead and would still have had the accident.

There will always be inattentive drivers, medical emergencies, etc. The idea is to minimise the damage caused. Smaller, lighter cars cause less damage.

Most estates are lighter than a range rover.

beethecrackon24995 · 07/07/2023 14:19

I call these vehicles bully cars. It's not just that they are very large. It is also that they are so often driven aggressively by entitled mentality. Usually speeding/ tailgating. Often double parked or on yellow lines whilst shopping instead of paying to park like most of us. This is my daily experience. I live in london/Essex...

Betteroutdoors · 07/07/2023 14:20

Well here is one for you to chew on OP. Take a look at the similarly hideous accident in Tideswell, where luckily there were no fatalities, but this time in a rural area this involved a Tesla....we'd probably better ban those as well.

I'm not linking to articles because I can't abide supporting certain newspapers by linking to them but it'll pop up on a google

ghostyslovesheets · 07/07/2023 14:21

tell me you want to have a big fight on MN without saying you want a big fight on MN

seriously OP 2 threads on this yesterday - no need for another - and responses like 'Not my problem. You got yourself into this situation.' don't really add much to the 'debate' do they?

missmollygreen · 07/07/2023 14:22

Most estates are lighter than a range rover.

A ranger rover weighs 2157kg, a BMW 5 series estate weighs 2035kg
That is one large passengers weight of difference

Doesn't help that most of the people who drive them are inconsiderate wankers.

Only wankers (within the M25… appropriate clause there) drive them.

they’re just wanky status symbols for pricks and driven terribly

missmollygreen · 07/07/2023 14:24

A tesla model X weighs 2554 kg

Sunnysideup999 · 07/07/2023 14:25

No one needs to drive these enormous two tonne cars in this country. Certainly not on the school run/ in rush hour traffic. How is it justifiable?
