No one needs to drive these enormous two tonne cars in this country. Certainly not on the school run/ in rush hour traffic. How is it justifiable?

2 tonne cars usually included all electric vehicles, due to their battery packs. So should most electric vehicles be banned now?

Guns have a host of legitimate/sporting purposes as well, which is why it is possible to get a gun license.

I'm not sure they could be banned, in some areas people are driving on rural and urban roads, however I do think that after passing a test there should be a restriction on the car a new driver can have and if someone wants to drive what is in effect the size of a commercial vehicle they should need to take a further test.

Electric cars were invented to save the car industry, not the environment. They are worse for brake and tyre emissions than a normal car due to the extra weight. The batteries are worse for the environment. Their lifetime carbon footprint is probably higher than a diesel car. They are more dangerous to pedestrians. Tesla's are huge and basically SUV's with a slightly different body shape. If you want an electric vehicle in a city go for an e bike or a golf buggy type thing.

I never mentioned banning vehicles - just that people should be mindful about whether the vehicle is appropriate for where they live and what they are using it for.
I see so many of these enormous SUVs that are literally just used for the school run - and it’s not an appropriate vehicle for that.
For many they are a status symbol / display of wealth.

I'm not a fan of large suvs but this is knee jerk reaction.
If you look at accident statistics, you can find that most accidents are caused by Toyota Prius, the most common colour of car involved in accidents is black and Kent has the highest rate of accidents in the UK.
There are many things we could research and ban.

So I live in a very rural area for obvious reason I need a 4x4 estate. I also am required to carry a lot of equipment with me as part of my job and a majority of the time I need to visit urban areas like Wimbledon.

Not everyone buys SUV's to show off or feel flashy- we have one as have a giant dog who would not fit in a smaller car (we take him via car for long walks on the weekend, when we go on camping holidays etc). They are also more convenient in rural areas and for older family members who struggle to get in lower, smaller cars. YABVU- shall we ban lorries, planes and buses too?

I agree OP, there are few people who genuinely need vehicles of this size and of this power despite what people say. They have no place in urban areas, a smaller car even if out of control wouldn't have caused as much damage.

Of course we should ban CERTAIN types of cars in urban environments.

What is a pity is that the family SUV does fill a legitimate need (high for older or less mobile people/ big space for dogs/ comfortable space for 2+ car seats/ good driving for the very tall) but that there really aren't many good options anymore so even if you don't want one, you can find yourself stuck with one.
