Can everyone stop driving these fucking stupid ego-tanks in urban areas now?

Who needs a fucking wank panzer in Wimbledon???

Ban them in urban areas.

Oh look, another one crossed off on the judging of others bingo card - if only
we were all so saintly as the OP instead of being fat bastards in an SUV :)

GreyTS · 07/07/2023 15:22

Don't worry @ghostyslovesheets that thing will disintegrate if you hit a fence, hardly comparable to a Ranger or a Hummer 😆

I doubt it would reach a speed capable of dinging the fence - it's a cheap little number!

I think the what about x large vehicle is particularly stupid. People who drive them require additional tests and for very large vehicles quite rigorous training. The vehicles themselves are also subject to more rigorous testing and checks, of course sadly there are still accidents in them, but it doesn't mean they're equally as risky as someone on a standard license driving an unnecessarily powerful and large car in an urban area. These vehicles also have a particular use, they don't deliver a pair of slippers in a HGV they utilise the space and fill it. The fence was reinforced inside with concrete but the vehicle still smashed through. Smaller cars don't cause as much damage, its a fact despite arguments to the contrary. It's quite basic physics.

bellac11 · 07/07/2023 15:35

I think the reality is that perhaps 80% of the owners of these massive type vehicles dont actually 'need' something that size (but then what is a 'need'?)

Im also making a huge generalisation when I say they seem to be driven by arseholes (or badly driven anyway)

But there will be a number of others who need it for their job, equipment, chores and tasks they need it for, the number of people they have, perhaps pets, perhaps hobbies etc.

A farmer/small holder for example who needs it for its various functions, then travels into town, or the local village a couple of times a weeek will look as if they're just driving around local town streets in some massive thing, but they actually do need the vehicle.

No banning should take place on the back of this incident, at the end of the day its a fairly domestic car and something went terribly wrong. If this had been a small van no one would be screaming to ban them.

OdeToBarney · 07/07/2023 15:35

YABU, for so many reasons that have already been pointed out on this thread. The driver of a bus, van, or lorry (making deliveries to the school, for example) could have had a medical episode resulting in the same outcome. It's tragic and heartbreaking, and I've thought about those children and their families a lot in the last 24 hours, but you are being plain ridiculous. You won't admit that, though. You're somewhat entrenched, aren't you.

AnImaginaryCat · 07/07/2023 15:35

Pinklagoon · 07/07/2023 14:42

Do as you did before they weren't banned.

Well to say they have never been banned, how do I do that? Your post makes zero sense. 😣

Well you did ask advice about what you are supposed to do about a ban on 4x4s, despite the fact there is no ban.

So you can carry on like you did before this imaginary ban. (In other words, carry on like you did before they weren't banned.)

It's confusing because actions before and after an imaginary ban can be the same.

Oh you're good OP - top grade goady posting - I'm guessing you actually KNOW this is referring to seatbelt laws and car seat laws for passengers - and, if, you have 3 children plus adults they all need a safe seat that meets requirements - which requires more space - I sold my Mini (which was built like a tank btw and was fast a fuck) when baby 3 arrived because it only had room for 2 car seats in the back.

Must be fun being a teeny tiny little thing rushing around on your push bike

How many uninformed threads on this subject do we need? You don't know what happened or what connection it has to an SUV other than random chance. There are awful car accidents every day involving all sorts of vehicles. Probably a lot of them involve the kind of car you drive.

bellac11 · 07/07/2023 15:37

Electric cars have very very fast acceleration, and they are almost silent until a certain speed kicks in. Im more worried about them than these Chelsea tractors.

Lionoso · 07/07/2023 15:40

As has been pointed out numerous times on the other thread. It's not just the weight and area of an SUV, it's the bonnet height and shape that makes them so much more dangerous, especially to pedestrians, especially to children.

ForeverFriendsAndPierrot · 07/07/2023 15:40

Fightyouforthatpie · 07/07/2023 15:20

I don't even have a dog in this fight, but really, the hatred and frothing is off the scale.

As usual

It's mumsnet though.....there's always one!

supersonicginandtonic · 07/07/2023 15:41

What about peiple with more than 3 children or those who tow a caravan. Or maybe even both 😳

Isnt that the same for vans though?

Im not even sure what cars come under the category of SUV, I know landrovers and range rovers do obviously

FixTheBone · 07/07/2023 15:43

Hintofreality · 07/07/2023 13:53

A mini would not have taken down two metal fences en route to ploughing into a group of children.

Nope, but pretty much any electric car with the torque they have and weight of batteries may well have done....

should be ban all electric cars as well?

Farming in Wimbledon?

IfYouDontAsk · 07/07/2023 15:46

We have no idea what the cause of this accident was. A child has died. Wouldn’t it be more respectful to wait until we know what actually happened here before leaping to apportion blame?

DixonD · 07/07/2023 15:48

Summerhillsquare · 07/07/2023 13:57

Fully agree. They are more dangerous for the occupants than smaller cars, too.

If you ain't a farmer, don't buy one.

They’re safer for the occupants in a collision with a smaller vehicle. They are not safer for pedestrians, nor those occupants of a smaller vehicle in a collision. We bought a SUV because it was safer for us. We also have a farm though.

bibbityboppityboo · 07/07/2023 15:48

I love our 4x4 - it's practical for where we live (and we even manage to drive it in a city) it does what we need from it, it's comfortable for us physically etc. Also in a recent car crash, we luckily came out mainly unscathed due to the fact we were in a more robust protected car. That for me is a big thing - I love my little car, but if I'd been in that car instead I'd have lost my legs.

What happened in Wimbledon was absolutely horrific and I can't imagine what the families are going through. I also think we don't even know the full facts, people are making judgements based on articles and the news before even a full investigation has taken place.

Banning larger cars probably isn't going to happen realistically - I'd happily take an extra test to drive it, and with a lot of local drivers around me the more worrying driving is from people in tiny cars.

Such a shocking one off type of accident always makes headlines and creates talk, surely it's best to wait until a full investigation has happened.

FixTheBone · 07/07/2023 15:50

SnackSizeRaisin · 07/07/2023 14:35

Electric cars were invented to save the car industry, not the environment. They are worse for brake and tyre emissions than a normal car due to the extra weight. The batteries are worse for the environment. Their lifetime carbon footprint is probably higher than a diesel car. They are more dangerous to pedestrians. Tesla's are huge and basically SUV's with a slightly different body shape. If you want an electric vehicle in a city go for an e bike or a golf buggy type thing.

Most electric cars don't have any 'brake emissions' as they use regenerative braking almost all of the time, which uses electrical resistance on the motor instead of the disc pads.

Their lifetime carbon footprint is lower (just) than an equivalent ICE car, and will reduce further as electricity production moves away from fossils.

Model Xs are huge.

My model 3 and model Y are almost identical size to the ford grand-cmax i used to have.

A woman charged with death by dangerous driving. The vehicle matters a lot less than the driver.

It was not an accident. It was her driving, apparently. Accidents are when you do not contribute. This was a criminal act or the evidence is there she was driving dangerously.
