About DH aversion to some foods

DH has some foods he really hates, not just he doesn’t like eating it but can’t stand the smell or appearance or anything. Problem is they are fairly standard recipe sort of items so hard to totally avoid.

Hes just been making ugh disgusting type noises again.

I think it’s really rude and he should stop. But wondered what others think.

If has a real aversion to them I think you both need to work on him not coming into contact with them.

You can give him a heads up when you're using them/cooking them. He then needs to go into another room. I agree it's ridiculous to stand near the food prep area making disgusted noises, just move away!

speluncean · 05/07/2023 20:03

I can't help my aversion to some foods. He has my sympathy.

Why does he or you cook them?

Groutyonehereagain · 05/07/2023 20:05

A grown man making noises over food would drive me NUTS. He’s behaving like a child.

speluncean · 05/07/2023 20:06

I'm autistic

I have involuntary reactions to some foods. I can't help it.

I avoid them as much as I can and I try really hard not to be around them but it's honestly not something I can control

Daffodil92 · 05/07/2023 20:07

Coke off it, saying “urgh disgusting” is not an involuntary reaction.
he needs to grow up.

speluncean · 05/07/2023 20:08

He's been making noises ? Not saying ugh disgusting?

It’s a fairly long list and would lead to an extremely limited diet if we avoided altogether.

Not normall behavior is it? Why is he like it?

Iguessyourestuckwithme · 05/07/2023 20:10

As someone who didn't realise that I had sensory processing disorder for a long time and grew up with parents who thought I should grow up. I'll tell you. I still react not by choice by the smell texture and taste of some things. Does it really effect you that badly that he doesn't like some things.

Hereinthismoment · 05/07/2023 20:10

It does effect you when someone is commenting on how disgusting what you’re eating / cooking is, yes!

Me too. I wasn't diagnosed until I was in my 40s (with autism and adhd - and the sensory disorders are a component of my autism)

speluncean · 05/07/2023 20:11

I eat in a different room to my trigger foods.

Is that an option?

Phos · 05/07/2023 20:12

Why would you cook him something he doesn't like?

romdowa · 05/07/2023 20:14

I have real sympathy with him I developed food aversions during pregnancy, even the smell of cooking chicken and garlic would make me gag and even now nearly 2 years on. I still can't stand them.

Hereinthismoment · 05/07/2023 20:14

Downstairs is open plan to hard to avoid.

Do all of you make these same noises involuntarily when eating out? I don’t wish to sound cynical but while the feeling may be involuntary the noises are not!

He sounds immature, which I hate in a man… makes them look emasculated and undesirable.

Peony654 · 05/07/2023 20:15

Sounds very immature and rude. Fine to not like certain foods but he doesn’t need to over react like that.

He is not pregnant.

Chicken and garlic are fairly standard items is the thing. I get it is unpleasant for you but would you honestly expect no one in your house to eat either of these things?

OP posts:
Peony654 · 05/07/2023 20:15

and fine to not eat whatever but he has no right to say others in the house can’t eat something

1stepforward2stepsback · 05/07/2023 20:16

I have a strong aversion to some foods, but I wouldn’t make silly noises or disparaging comments about what someone else was eating, that is rude and childish.

It could be helpful to avoid particular smells in the same room as him, and wash up your own dishes if it’s something he is very averse too, but otherwise just carry on as usual and ask him to refrain from commenting.

I do. I try really hard not to but I do.

I find it really difficult to be in the same room as my trigger foods.

Hereinthismoment · 05/07/2023 20:18

So if there are two people with sensory problems and one has to have certain foods and they make the other gag …?

Fine if you live alone and never go out but …

What foods does he have aversions to?
You should see me with eggs 🤢

Fairislefandango · 05/07/2023 20:21

If this were just a couple of foods, then it would be ok. But it isn't. It's totally unreasonable for you to have to eat a restricted diet. It's his issue and he needs to be proactive in tackling it, not just standing there making 'ugh' noises. Surely he can cook himself something separate and eat elsewhere in the house when you're having something he won't eat?

7Worfs · 05/07/2023 20:21

If he really had physical aversions he’d just exit the kitchen asap. Hanging around making comments tells me he’s a big baby.
