Just browsing online for new tea, coffee and sugar canisters.
One review said how great they were because they were easy to clean....

Clean? People clean these?

I'm fairly sure the sugar at the bottom of mine has been in there a good few years, unless my weekly shake and refill and dislodged the little bits that stick to the edge.

Am I the only one? Will my nan be disappointed? 😅

Gosh can’t believe some of you don’t wash them! I wash mine every evening before ‘closing the kitchen down’ for the night.
Getting then dry to refill is a pain but I find a hair dryer does the trick.

Don’t mean to be rude but GET A LIFE 😆

Yeah me too, crusted on sugar is grim !

This is mumsnet. I think you'll find putting sugar in drinks is grim.🤣

No I don’t clean them. I don’t iron tea towels either, or bedsheets or pants. I’m too busy LIVING. Anyone that does needs to get a life.

calm down, it takes me less time to pop a couple of empty canisters in the dish washer that it took you to write the post above.

There's an argument that says women should iron their pants; cool washes don't see off fungi...

Sugar Rush GIF

The germs inside the sugar canister that hasn't been cleaned for 5 years...

Elephantsdontlikechocolate · 29/06/2023 16:11

Some Mumsnetters will clean anything. In severe cases they clean all day, every day, everything they can lay their eye on.
And then we are surprised why women don't have the same opportunities as men and why children grow up viewing certain things as women's jobs even when we do try to bring them up as not to.

BucketofTeaMassiveCake · 29/06/2023 16:12

I wipe over the outside and give the insides a bit of a wipe with some kitchen paper now and again - especially when refilling - that's all, but Lord knows I'm a slovenly slattern.

Corgiowner · 29/06/2023 16:14

I have tea caddies and glass jars for sugar, bread flour etc I have never cleaned them in my whole life. Now late 50’s I’ve only ever had D and V once (when I was still living at home with my parents) and rarely get colds perhaps this is why😂😂.

TheNoodlesIncident · 29/06/2023 16:19

I'll clean the lid tops because they get a bit greasy and dusty in the kitchen. And we knock out the tea dust out of the teabag canister when we refill it.

I don't wash out the insides though, can't see any need to do that.

Coffee is usually in the packet or jar it comes in and sugar is kept in the cupboard because nobody really uses it, so our canisters mostly have different kinds of teabags in, but the principle would be the same for coffee and sugar.

There are muckier things to focus on imo.

Pigeon31 · 29/06/2023 16:22

Cannisters? Sugar tends to live in its packet in my house :)

Superdupes · 29/06/2023 16:24

Yeah if it's not obviously disgusting then it doesn't get cleaned in this house. IMO you're more likely to get crusted on sugar when it hasn't dried properly after you've washed it - so much better no to bother.

DisplayPurposesOnly · 29/06/2023 13:35

I have fairly low standards and even I clean mine...

Ditto

Sceptre86 · 29/06/2023 16:24

I wipe the outside.

PoliticallyIncorrectHitchling · 29/06/2023 16:33

Every time I run out of tea, coffee or sugar, they go in the dishwasher and then I dry and fill them up.

Cherryblossoms85 · 29/06/2023 16:41

I've never washed them, no. The sugar is a bit crusty but whatever really. I would if I had a coffee one but I use fresh ground beans so the coffee is just kept in its packet with a clip before being poured into the grinder.

Cirice · 29/06/2023 16:42

I do clean them, but only because they are the most impractical things in the world but I wont admit defeat because I love them too much....

Wait, people clean these?!

cinnamonfrenchtoast · 29/06/2023 16:52

Mine just get washed with the dishes whenever they're empty. Depending on what's in them, maybe every 2-6 weeks?

Don’t ever read the Lakeland website, they have cleaning implements on there for things I bet they don’t even clean in intensive care wards……….

Kendodd · 29/06/2023 17:03

RachelNoire · 29/06/2023 13:36

Wait, people have canisters for these things?

I agree.
Likewise plastic washing up bowls and bread bins (just keep it in the cupboard with the rest of the food).

MrsR87 · 29/06/2023 17:04

Mine get washed properly when I refill them. If it’s not totally empty then I empty the remnants into a bowl, wash, top up and put the older stuff back on top. Probably happens every three months or so.

They get wiped down on the outside when I noticed they need it as they are in a cupboard so don’t gather as much dust and kitchen grease as they did when they were on the worktop.

Marchintospring · 29/06/2023 17:11

My house isn’t clean enough to have anyone round so it matters not what I do.

However I am the only one that drinks hot drinks ( and only black coffee). You want as little air in instant coffee as possible so I never decant. Only use sugar for cooking.
One less set of problems.

DeanElderberry · 29/06/2023 17:12

I can understand why people in households where others don't wash their hands and do handle things in the kitchen feel the need to wash stuff more often than I would.

Lachimolala · 29/06/2023 17:18

I wash mine when I refill them. So not often but every few months or so.

ScottBakula · 29/06/2023 17:20

Sallyh87 · 29/06/2023 14:14

Nope I never clean mine, sorry Mumsnet. Also, a chicken only lasted one meal in my house 😂

I dont think you are allowed on MN anymore please hand in your membership badge 😂

I dont drink tea or take sugar in my coffee but I do have different coffee canisters ( all different ground coffee ) , I use a pastry brush to 'dust' them on the inside but I cant remember the last time I washed them , many months I would guess
