Wait, people clean these?!

Just browsing online for new tea, coffee and sugar canisters.
One review said how great they were because they were easy to clean....

Clean? People clean these?

I'm fairly sure the sugar at the bottom of mine has been in there a good few years, unless my weekly shake and refill and dislodged the little bits that stick to the edge.

Am I the only one? Will my nan be disappointed? 😅

We hardly ever use them so they stay pristine - cold drinks only here. They get a spring clean at Christmas

youwerentthere · 29/06/2023 15:08

I run them down then just before wash time, DH comes through all proud 'I refilled the tea and coffee'

🤦🏻‍♀️

Gwenhwyfar · 29/06/2023 14:58

It's only crusted on if people put wet spoons into the sugar.

That would be me. I'm the only sugar taker in the house so it's my fault it goes crusty.

Fandabedodgy · 29/06/2023 15:11

I usually manage about once a year.

Goldenbunny · 29/06/2023 15:11

No canisters here for our tea bags or sugar they stay in the boxes/packaging they where purchased in. Don't buy coffee .
My friend brought me some canisters at Xmas and I took them to the charity shop cause I don't see the need for them.
My mum always had canisters and she washed them out once a week when she was doing the refill.

PuzzledObserver · 29/06/2023 15:11

Glass jars for coffee and tea bags. The tea bag one has the loose bits shaken out when I refill it.

Other than that, I think they’ve been through the dishwasher a few times in the last 20 years. You know - when they looked like they needed it.

I hate it when people do that.

What on earth are bum hands? 😕 I keep my hands on the end of my arms.

It's a saying in our house that started when the kids were small that over the years has come to mean unwashed hands, or hands that have been where other peoples unwashed hands have been.

Maggiesgirl · 29/06/2023 15:14

I have two sets, plain glass, when one is empty it's put in the dishwasher and the other filled up. Can't stand seeing stuck on sugar and coffee. Doesn't help that DH will put wet teaspoons into each one of them.

Begonne · 29/06/2023 15:15

Some of you are filthy slatterns. It literally only takes seconds to give them a quick swish with the toilet brush between refills. The laziness astounds me.

I don't refill them till they're washed.

Susuwatariandkodama · 29/06/2023 15:17

Mine are metal, I give them a wipe occasionally

HamstersAreMyLife · 29/06/2023 15:18

I have 3 canisters for tea bags. Just got a new set and both old and new sets say wipe clean only so they get washed occasionally every few years. I wipe down the outside if grubby but I can't see why you would clean them more often....maybe they need it for sugar as I guess that might get sticky?

User13985094 · 29/06/2023 15:19

Mine are pottery ones that occasionally go in the dishwasher, I found with tin ones, stuff got stuck in the crevices at the bottom and they are not so easy to wash

speakout · 29/06/2023 15:23

I clean mine too, when they become empty, I wash out with hot soapy water and dry thoroughly before refilling.

Topseyt123 · 29/06/2023 15:23

Coffee is of the instant variety and stays in the jar I buy it in. I just spoon it out of there and then the jar goes into the recycling.

Teabags go into a ceramic canister with a wooden lid. I rarely actually wash it, but I do find that a fair bit of fine dark dusty stuff (from the tea leaves) builds up over time in the bottom so I just shake that out and slosh it down the sink. The canister doesn't even get wet. 🤣

The sugar is in a metal canister with a perspex lid. That does very occasionally get washed out because it goes very crusty if I don't. I always wait until it is fully dry before refilling, and rub it down with kitchen roll.

Zebedee55 · 29/06/2023 15:30

Yeah, I wash and clean them every week..😗

CrunchyCarrot · 29/06/2023 15:31

Metal tea bag canisters - never clean.
Ceramic sugar pot - clean very, very occasionally (annually?)

Ditto with biscuit tins, actually. Don't wash inside those either, just bang them out occasionally to get rid of crumbs.

MooMooSharoo · 29/06/2023 15:31

I occasionally clean my sugar bowl if an idiot has used a wet spoon in the bowl, but it's a pretty ceramic sugar bowl, so I just chuck it in the dishwasher.

The tea canister just gets tapped against the bin when the last tea bag is taken out to get rid of the tea dust that's gathered!

PedalStool · 29/06/2023 15:34

Sewaccidentprone · 29/06/2023 14:53

I buy loose tea and coffee with a special scoop and occasionally wipe the outside of the the caddy’s, but if the insides were wet then the stuff would go manky.

if I used bags I’d empty the dust out before refilling. Don’t use sugar.

‘The insides were wet then the stuff would go manky.’

Yes exactly. I don’t have a sugar canister but I can see no advantage to washing the ones containing tea and coffee.

Kabbalah · 29/06/2023 15:39

Mrsjayy · 29/06/2023 13:42

I dishwash mine every now and again.

Me too.

PurpleWisteria1 · 29/06/2023 15:44

Gosh can’t believe some of you don’t wash them! I wash mine every evening before ‘closing the kitchen down’ for the night.
Getting then dry to refill is a pain but I find a hair dryer does the trick.

Hoolihan · 29/06/2023 15:46

I've got the tea caddy we had in my childhood home so I'd say it realistically might be more than 50 years old, has never been washed AFAIK. It's only had tea bags in it!

Libre2 · 29/06/2023 15:49

Noone takes sugar so it just stays in the bag for cooking.

Coffee and tea - no - I have NEVER washed either of them - it has never even occurred to me that this would be something to do!

Mumtothreegirlies · 29/06/2023 16:05

No I don’t clean them. I don’t iron tea towels either, or bedsheets or pants. I’m too busy LIVING. Anyone that does needs to get a life.
