Wait, people clean these?!

Just browsing online for new tea, coffee and sugar canisters.
One review said how great they were because they were easy to clean....

Clean? People clean these?

I'm fairly sure the sugar at the bottom of mine has been in there a good few years, unless my weekly shake and refill and dislodged the little bits that stick to the edge.

Am I the only one? Will my nan be disappointed? 😅

Wait, people have canisters for these things?

Exactly - we use the packaging they came in.

I have fairly low standards and even I clean mine...

Me too!

gotthearse · 29/06/2023 13:49

Mine get bit of spray/wiped on the outside where everyones' bum hands go when I clean the kitchen. Inside might get the odd shake into the bin.

Been in my house 23 years, no I don't think I have ever washed the tea or sugar caddy out.
I do wipe round the top of the tea caddy once in a while. Am I less of a heathen now?

I gasped at this.

Then realised that I am just being ridiculous as its obviously not done you a jot of harm and who am i to judge.

StarchySturgess1 · 29/06/2023 13:53

I've got 70's Hornsea ones and they go through the dishwasher when they're empty. Granted I don't have a sugar one though.

Ilovecleaning · 29/06/2023 13:54

Lol. I clean my regularly 😊. But I wouldn’t judge someone for not cleaning theirs.
(I have a handheld Shark vacuum which I use to hoover the bottom of the teabag canister before I refill … I am aware this is OTT! 🤣)

Crunchymum · 29/06/2023 13:54

I remember a helpful housemate cleaning them but they didn't wait for them to dry properly before refilling so we eventually got down to soggy sugar, mushy teabags and congealed coffee granules.

I do occasionally do mine. Only on the rare occasion they all happen to be empty and I have the time!!

I've a tiny vacuum for worktop hoovering and the like. It's a total juxtaposition because I haven't cleaned the skirting in probably....8 years 🤷🏼‍♀️

Bigboysmademedoit · 29/06/2023 13:55

I use Kilner jars for sugar and wash them out between refills - they get crusty otherwise.

Oh I'd love a worktop hoover ! I sometimes go behind my microwave with my handheld it's clunky though.

DrownLoad · 29/06/2023 13:57

I can't imagine not cleaning them. I wash them after every second refill. They do dry properly when left upside down overnight. I also sit them on the radiator if the heating is on.

Isseywith3witchycats · 29/06/2023 13:40

yes i do when the canister is empty i wash it before i fill it again so not all 3 together

Me too. I thought that was normal.

Theoldwoman · 29/06/2023 13:59

Mine all go through the dishwasher when empty before I refill them.

DrownLoad · 29/06/2023 13:59

Actually I'll wash them after one refill if necessary but usually after two.

DisforDarkChocolate · 29/06/2023 14:00

The sugar one gets washed regularly.

Hollyppp · 29/06/2023 14:00

Don’t have canisters for those things but do for rice and pasta and porridge. But yes would wait til it runs out, then wash with soap and water, dry for a few hours and then refill with fresh stuff from the supermarket

Mrsjayy · 29/06/2023 14:03

Oh now we are getting fancy. Pasta canisters 😃

TheWalrusdidbeseech · 29/06/2023 14:04

Dishwasher every time they are empty, refill once dry. I don't have much in the kitchen that doesn't go in the dishwasher.

Housekeeperbatcocoa · 29/06/2023 14:06

I wash mine before bed and then leave them overnight to dry.

Only about every three months or so though, but that's all they really need.

waterlego · 29/06/2023 14:07

Our sugar lives in its bag in a cupboard as it’s only used for baking which doesn’t happen often. I have once or twice cleaned the tea caddy but only because it’s glass and I like glass to look sparkly. I don’t do it for hygiene reasons. I’m quite relaxed about germs!

Oh me too with Hornsea. I love it, but mine is not washed often!!

LakieLady · 29/06/2023 14:07

I never wash mine out, just wipe the outsides when I clean the window sill.

The teabag canister gets the occasional wipe inside when I refill it. The sugar one? God only knows.

I don't take sugar and hardly anyone I know takes it. I couldn't tell you the last time I refilled the canister, but it would be years ago, rather than months. The sugar at the bottom is probably fossilised by now.

ThoseClementineShoes · 29/06/2023 14:07

Tea and coffee ones might get a wipe with kitchen towel before refilling. I don’t take sugar. The only person I know who does is my MIL and she only takes half a teaspoon and lives a few hours away so I wouldn’t like to say that it’s ever been empty. That’s probably the worst one not to clean as well but I’ve never thought about it. Oh well!

ButImNotOldEnough · 29/06/2023 14:07

Agree with PP’s, these things definitely need cleaned. Would you put a dip in a bowl without cleaning it in between uses? Good rule of thumb is every time the canister is empty, wash it, dry it, refill it.

MrsClatterbuck · 29/06/2023 14:08

I have glass bodum canisters and put in dishwasher occasionally.
