Wait, people clean these?!

Just browsing online for new tea, coffee and sugar canisters.
One review said how great they were because they were easy to clean....

Clean? People clean these?

I'm fairly sure the sugar at the bottom of mine has been in there a good few years, unless my weekly shake and refill and dislodged the little bits that stick to the edge.

Am I the only one? Will my nan be disappointed? 😅

Mine are never empty and have never been cleaned! I think people would generally be shocked at the 'things I don't clean'!

hettiethehare · 29/06/2023 14:09

I've got glass jars now for teabags, coffee pods and sugar and they get grubby with finger prints really easily, so I stick them through the dishwasher every so often.

Prior to that, other than the occasional wipe round the top, it is probably 15 years since they were last cleaned out ...

Mine get bit of spray/wiped on the outside where everyones' bum hands go when I clean the kitchen. Inside might get the odd shake into the bin.

Bum hands?!

Kazzyhoward · 29/06/2023 14:10

Many of the comments above are why we don't use such canisters in holiday homes etc. You've no idea how long it is since they've been emptied, washed and refilled with new.

ilovesushi · 29/06/2023 14:12

Never washed my tea caddy though I have detolled the outside. I shake out any loose tea when I'm out of bags, but I don't every remember washing it. Maybe once in a blue moon.

YouJustDoYou · 29/06/2023 14:13

I knew a girl who would use tin foil and then wash it clean in the sink to re-use later. I mean, it's do-able, but a bit of a ball ache I guess. I think her parents were eco warriors.

Saschka · 29/06/2023 14:13

I’ve avoided this issue by keeping sugar in the bag and teabags in the box they come in…

I do keep coffee in an airtight container, and wash that out between batches to avoid mixing the flavour. But it is just a normal tupperware. Instant coffee stays in the jar (my DM prefers instant for some reason).

DeanElderberry · 29/06/2023 14:13

I have a tin for loose leaf tea. When I'm putting new tea into it I empty the last dusty stuff from the bottom into the lid, then put that back onto the top of the fresh leaves so that it will get used first.

I've never felt the need to clean the actual tin, it's only 45 years old.

I do wash the sugar container between refills - which don't need to happen often.

DeanElderberry · 29/06/2023 14:13

doesn't not don't

LoopyLoo1991 · 29/06/2023 14:14

Don't think that tall lidded jar thing that holds spaghetti my aunt's got has ever been cleaned?
Part of her wedding present set I think, so possibly not cleaned since 1977?

InMySpareTime · 29/06/2023 14:14

Some things are now in old coffee jars, but sugar is in an old formula milk tin. I've probably washed it a few times but it's still going strong 20 or so years later.

phoenixrosehere · 29/06/2023 14:14

Why wouldn’t you clean it?

Sallyh87 · 29/06/2023 14:14

Nope I never clean mine, sorry Mumsnet. Also, a chicken only lasted one meal in my house 😂

Moveoverdarlin · 29/06/2023 14:15

I’m pretty slovenly but yes, I clean them.

flyhome · 29/06/2023 14:17

Every time any container is emptied, it's washed before re use. Have always done so

LaBefana · 29/06/2023 14:19

We must be terribly common because we keep things like instant coffee, tea bags, etc in their original jar or packet. We don't buy sugar for the table, there is a little packet of caster sugar in the cupboard, I don't suppose it's been opened in the last two years.

CherryRipe1 · 29/06/2023 14:19

Occasional decrust of sugar canister as partner always puts a wet spoon in it. Tea dust is a pain, bloody factory sweepings we call them.

WakeMeUpWhenGoodOmensIsBack · 29/06/2023 14:19

ButImNotOldEnough · 29/06/2023 14:07

Agree with PP’s, these things definitely need cleaned. Would you put a dip in a bowl without cleaning it in between uses? Good rule of thumb is every time the canister is empty, wash it, dry it, refill it.

Dips develop bacteria and mould. Sugar, teabags and instant coffee don't - for various reasons.

When I had my jars out on the side I'd need to wash them frequently because they attracted kitchen dust and grease on the outside. Now they're in a cupboard I hardly ever wash them.

TheWorldIsRound · 29/06/2023 14:20

I have lived for 46 years, keeping porridge oats, rice, sugar, tea, coffee and four different varieties of flour (plain, self-raising, bread, gluten free) in receptacles that have never been washed. I am the picture of health and vitality.
I also don't wash new plates, mugs and glasses that I have just bought - I just bring them home, peel off the labels and put them in the cupboard and use them - no ill effects have been noted.
All you people washing your cannisters - save your time!

WhoamiWhoareyouOhNo · 29/06/2023 14:20

Nope.

Coffee beans in kilner jar, teabags in ancient metal tea caddy. No need to clean either bar an odd wipe down of the glass jar.

No one in my house eats sugar. Its there for guests of course but honestly I think I've had the same airtight jar full for about 4 years...

WakeMeUpWhenGoodOmensIsBack · 29/06/2023 14:21

Salt grab is out on the side near the hob, and gets washed very regularly - I decant the salt into a bowl while it's drying.

bluelavender · 29/06/2023 14:21

Just pop it in the dishwasher before refilling it?

CaptainMyCaptain · 29/06/2023 14:24

I haven't got a sugar canister. Who takes sugar these days? Ground coffee is kept in the packet in the fridge. I don't use instant. I keep tea bags in an enamel canister and wipe the lid regularly. I occasionally wash the container but leave it out to dry for a few hours.

CaptainMyCaptain · 29/06/2023 14:26

YouJustDoYou · 29/06/2023 14:13

I do that. Maybe I'm your friend's mum.

Onegroupcard · 29/06/2023 14:27

Can't see why you would wash it TBH, what's dirty about a bunch of teabags in a jar?
