Wait, people clean these?!

Just browsing online for new tea, coffee and sugar canisters.
One review said how great they were because they were easy to clean....

Clean? People clean these?

I'm fairly sure the sugar at the bottom of mine has been in there a good few years, unless my weekly shake and refill and dislodged the little bits that stick to the edge.

Am I the only one? Will my nan be disappointed? 😅

I clean mine because I hate when all the tea dust gets into my cup of tea! I shake teabags when I take them out but the build up doesn't help the bags at the bottom

Same for sugar I hate it getting all crusted to the bottom of the container

MissChanandlerB0NG · 29/06/2023 17:25

Occasionally they are cleaned. A handful of times a year at most.

User27680416 · 29/06/2023 17:26

I don't clean then. Just tap the dust at the bottom into the in when they're empty and refill.

Don’t mean to be rude but GET A LIFE 😆

I was being scarcastic - mumsnet style
mine only get a cursory wipe on the outside 🤣

MrsMarzetti · 29/06/2023 17:30

Every time they need re-filling and the bottoms are cleaned every few days as does the bottom of kitchen roll holder.

jmh740 · 29/06/2023 17:40

I wash the sugar one each time I refill it. Can't remember the last time I did the coffee or tea ones though

For a minute I thought you were talking about ovens.

(Mine's filthy)

CeriB82 · 29/06/2023 17:46

Ive never cottoned on to emptying one jar only to fill another.

mine are in their shop packaging in the cupboard

GremlinDolphin4 · 29/06/2023 17:50

I clean the sugar bowl whenever it’s empty and tip out tea dust. Coffee stays in the jar!

LondonQueen · 29/06/2023 17:51

Clean mine every time they're emptied, they are glass with bamboo lids. I'd feel a bit grim if they weren't cleaned regularly.

BodegaSushi · 29/06/2023 17:55

ive never done it. i refill it before it's completely empty anyway.

Our teabags come in boxes and we drink enough tea that it would be a PITA to have to get it out of the cupboard every time tea was made.

Hence we have canisters for the teabags to live in. However ours aren't easy to clean, because wiping doesn't seem to do much and they can't go in the dishwasher because they have a metal layer over glass and I just know that water would end up between and never dry properly. I got them off ebay after seeing Nigella with the exact same ones some years ago. So they are quite grubby so I'm not surprised at all that MN clean freaks are regularly cleaning them.

We also have these to keep pasta etc in and lets say that DP has never taken enough interest in them to ask how much they cost Blush

Every time I refill I clean them.

StrawberryAmaretti · 29/06/2023 18:03

I wash mine once they start looking grim so every 6 months to a year.
Think never washing them is a bit gross as the sugar surely will go all bad and crusty at the bottom. 😊

MerryHen · 29/06/2023 18:05

I put the sugar one through the dishwasher when it's empty, then let it thoroughly air dry before refilling. Same with the boxes and jars containing flour, raisins, rice etc.

I don't drink tea or coffee so don't touch those. DH might clean them... maybe? But come to think of it I don't recall ever seeing them in the dishwasher 🙈

maddiemookins16mum · 29/06/2023 18:13

Our sugar and tea ones gets a wash when empty before refilling. I’d say weekly.

TheMrsColumbo · 29/06/2023 18:14

Yes I clean them.
The tea one gets tea drips on from the teapot and other splatters on as it's near the hob.
The coffee one gets dusty and chocolate powder/cinnamon on from DC's drink creations.
Sugar gets cleaned less often as it lives in the cupboard.

Brokendaughter · 29/06/2023 18:15

I stick mine in the dishwasher when they need refilling.

I'm not even that tidy, but I thought everyone cleaned them.

Starcatty · 29/06/2023 18:23

I moved into my house 6 years ago and decided to decant the tea bags from a box into a jar that looked nicer on my new worktop. I’m not sure I’ve ever reached the bottom of the jar as it just keeps getting topped up with fresh tea bags. I wipe the top and outside of the jar when it’s looking dusty. I’m quite tempted now to have a look and see what a 6 year old tea bag from the bottom of the jar looks/ tastes like now but that would make a mess that I’d then have to clean up 😂

TerfIngOnTheBeach · 29/06/2023 18:39

I hate canisters on the worktop…shudders.

We use about 1 bag of sugar a year and thats for baking not hot drinks, the instant coffee is in a jar out of sight in the cupboard and the tea bags are in a Yorkshire Tea caddy in the cupboard. The coffee jar is recycled, tea caddy never washed but the sugar container gets washed about once a year when it looks a little crusty.

Odalisque · 29/06/2023 18:43

Oo interesting.

I wipe the outside of canisters if they are getting a bit grubtastic. Inside I might shake out the teabag dust from time to time. We use Demerara and it doesn't seem to clump so just top it up. Coffee stays in the jar it came in because we hardly ever drink it.

User13985094 · 29/06/2023 19:25

I have to have a container for the coffee machine coffee as it is always packed so tightly and I invariably tear the pack when opening so it leaks everywhere, I always put that one in the dishwasher after finishing a pack as it makes a bit of a mess. Instant coffee always comes in a tin or jar so it's much less messy.

FrangipaniBlue · 29/06/2023 22:35

I've a feeling MIL might clean
ours when she dog sits when we're on holiday.....

Don't think I've ever done it though 🤣
