Wait, people clean these?!

Just browsing online for new tea, coffee and sugar canisters.
One review said how great they were because they were easy to clean....

Clean? People clean these?

I'm fairly sure the sugar at the bottom of mine has been in there a good few years, unless my weekly shake and refill and dislodged the little bits that stick to the edge.

Am I the only one? Will my nan be disappointed? 😅

Yes otherwise the sugar/coffee can build up and stick to the canisters or leave residue.

tossingpenniesinthepool · 29/06/2023 13:41

Mine are never empty, I refill as I shop, maybe this is the issue.

But then isn't there coffee or tea bags stuck at the bottoms for ever?!

DanceMonster · 29/06/2023 14:29

I only have a coffee one as we don’t drink tea or use sugar, but I don’t think I’ve ever cleaned it 😳. I just refill when empty.

Workbabysleeprepeat · 29/06/2023 14:32

Oh dear these threads make me feel very unclean! I’ve never bothered to clean them….

Can't see why you would wash it TBH, what's dirty about a bunch of teabags in a jar?

It's the outside that gets dusty, fingerprints, kitchen grease etc. If you have a sugar canister then any dampness e.g. from a spoon will form crusty bits.

Sunshineishere1988 · 29/06/2023 14:32

I would say a couple of times a year for each of them. We dont use sugar very often so it stays fairly nice in there and just do the coffee/tea one when I notice it.

I was surprised the other day how often people clean the fridge out. I give my shelves a wipe say once a month - people were commenting that they always clean the fridge out every week before the food shop 😅

I thought I was a really clean person too…

I've a tiny vacuum for worktop hoovering and the like. It's a total juxtaposition because I haven't cleaned the skirting in probably....8 years 🤷🏼‍♀️

I totally understand - too far down to bend 🤣. But you can get long handled dusters … lol

Yeah mine get cleaned regularly…

Ladyoftheknight · 29/06/2023 14:38

Mine get cleaned every 1-2 refills so around once a fortnight. Clumping, drips, old grains etc need to be cleaned! The teabag dust especially, you can't just tap it all out. I have the Rae Dunn canisters and they're easy to clean and dry. This is why you can't eat in everyone's kitchen...

Kugela · 29/06/2023 14:43

I’m too lazy to bother with canisters. Everything stays in its original packets or jars. Sugar gets thrown out and replaced about a year after it’s opened (I write the date on the bag).

DisplayPurposesOnly · 29/06/2023 13:35

I have fairly low standards and even I clean mine...

Um me too!

NoTouch · 29/06/2023 14:46

Does fishing out the odd labrador hair that occasionally finds it way into the tin constitute "cleaning"? I also give the outside a quick wipe if something splashes on it.

dancinginthesky · 29/06/2023 14:50

I don't clean them because I don't have them. Useless things that take up unnecessary countertop space

I just buy tea coffee and sugar and keep it in the packet in a wall cabinet- it runs out and a new one gets bought. I do stick the sugar in a Tupperware pot that when it runs out goes through the dishwasher but only because bags of sugar can leak in the cupboard and that stops that - tea and coffee just use the bloody packet it comes in 🤷‍♀️😂

PedalStool · 29/06/2023 14:52

I don’t wash mine. But I don’t wipe my skirting boards either so I might just be slovenly.

HarrisJu · 29/06/2023 14:53

I bought the current jars a year ago. I think I’ve washed them once near Christmas in expectation of a very fussy visitor.

Sewaccidentprone · 29/06/2023 14:53

I buy loose tea and coffee with a special scoop and occasionally wipe the outside of the the caddy’s, but if the insides were wet then the stuff would go manky.

if I used bags I’d empty the dust out before refilling. Don’t use sugar.

YouJustDoYou · 29/06/2023 14:13

I knew a girl who would use tin foil and then wash it clean in the sink to re-use later. I mean, it's do-able, but a bit of a ball ache I guess. I think her parents were eco warriors.

Guilty as charged! Though it depends what it has been used for ( fish never)
DH throws it out regardless, I get quite cross ( though I don’t say anything, because I like it when he cooks and cleans up).

Gwenhwyfar · 29/06/2023 14:58

Mrsjayy · 29/06/2023 13:41

Yeah me too, crusted on sugar is grim !

It's only crusted on if people put wet spoons into the sugar.

NerrSnerr · 29/06/2023 14:58

I have never cleaned ours. There is a chance my husband may have done it, he's the most likely one in our family to be arsed with it. I do wipe the outsides sometimes.

Allthegoodnamesarechosen · 29/06/2023 14:59

I don’t do the tea or coffee in our household, but I have just asked DH if he cleans out the canisters, and he says yes, when they are empty ( sometimes they just get topped up) ; .we have canisters because we mix our own tea from two sorts, and the ground coffee lives in one as it is less liable to spillage than hoicking it out of the packet.

I’m quite pleased to discover his house keeping protocol, so thanks.

Fizzadora · 29/06/2023 15:00

If I lived on my own, my canisters would never need washing because I always use a dry spoon.
Sadly I have to share my space with others who have no sensibilities over these things.

Twiglets1 · 29/06/2023 15:00

I occasionally put mine in the dishwasher… I mean very, very occasionally

toomuchlaundry · 29/06/2023 15:04

If you never actually empty the canister but refill when it is getting low, you don't get the chance to wash the inside. Use jars for pasta and we refill before they are empty so just realised they very rarely get washed inside (will wipe the outside)

Zonder · 29/06/2023 15:04

We use sugar lumps so no chance of a wet teaspoon going in. I've cleaned the sugar pot once since we got it. And that was to make sure it didn't have dust from the shop in it.

CustardySergeant · 29/06/2023 15:08

gotthearse · 29/06/2023 13:49

Mine get bit of spray/wiped on the outside where everyones' bum hands go when I clean the kitchen. Inside might get the odd shake into the bin.

What on earth are bum hands? 😕 I keep my hands on the end of my arms.
