Another dog attack

Unsure33 · 07/06/2023 19:04

There is a horrific video on twitter of a young woman being attacked in east London by three dogs

owner in hoodie , pit bull types .

I am a dog owner but also have ended up in hospital after a dog attack and it made me feel sick

honestly I think we need dog licences , dog wardens and more accountability because the current laws don’t seem to be deterring people letting dogs off their leads and having no control . If it prices some owners out I am sorry tough luck . Dogs are expensive and there needs to be some more incentive to keep them under control .

It's not about hating dogs, it's about keeping people safe.
Honestly I've said it before but watching the British reaction to every new dog attack is like watching Americans every time they have another gun attack at a school. Everyone hand wrings and says it's so tragic and that something needs to be done and nothing gets done because fundamentally people see it as their right to have a dangerous dog.
People are not responsible enough to have dogs, dogs need licencing.

This is spot on.

Repeal the current Dangerous Dogs Act and replace with new framework

This is a much better petition. It specifically calls out that targetting breed has not worked and wants the laws doing so repealled in favour of better methods...

"We want the Government to repeal the Dangerous Dogs Act and replace it with legislation that focuses on early intervention to prevent dog bites and tackle dog-related issues regardless of breed or type, based solely on their behaviour.

The Government commissioned a steering group to provide advice on policies aimed at reducing dog attacks and promoting responsible ownership of dogs. However, their report is not due until next year.

In view of shocking and tragic events that continue to result from the current legislation, urgent action is required NOW, in the interest of public safety and the welfare of dogs. Organisations involved in the Government's steering group oppose Breed Specific Legislation and agree breed is not a prediction of aggressive behaviour. We believe the current legislation is enabling more fatalities and failing to prevent the dog attack trend. It needs repeal immediately."

What early intervention are the chavs that own these dogs going to engage with ? None is the answer.

I skim read the thread .... But anyway; it probably needs said 3 times.

And youll probably have a fourth and fifth time ....

What is MN if not pedantic... I mean, if it makes anyone feel better to keep posting it, glad to be of service!

kethuphouse · 07/06/2023 20:55

These dogs are used as weapons. Trying to get the owners to use their 'weapon' responsibly is just not realistic. They do not see their dogs as just pets so you cannot appeal to their sense of responsibility for the general public. They do not care about the general public, or their dog.

Oysterbabe · 07/06/2023 20:58

It's a miracle that woman survived. There's a moment when one jumps and snaps at her throat, if it had got her she'd be dead.
Horrific and terrifying and why I'm afraid for my children going to the park.

The Daily Mirror is running a campaign at the moment

@Crunchymum I'm not site how to but I can try and bump it on aibu.

Yes crunch mum some people suggested walking around with marigolds lube and going for it's bum mid attack for which I would also need a kneeling pad and glasses, 🤣.

Some said walk around with a vet and gp whilst sedated.
However some cheap and light tips also on there like this high pitched noise thing, with led light that could stop it or distract it. Also a k9 spray sold on amazon.

Others said that squeeze lemon juice thing, a brake stick which you lodge into it's mouth and I'm not sure if it's a joke but something called a wolf stick.

.

Someone in my village has an XL bully and it makes me feel sick. My husband is so protective of our dog and was saying tonight about what he'd do if the bully attacked and I had to say to him to not pick our dog up. He was insistent he couldn't not try and save our dog and I'm trying to point out he has two kids and our dog has at most 5 years left whereas he could have 50. Still wouldn't trust him not to. I just don't want to live around breeds like this. We're in a quiet rural village and they're even here now. The family that have acquired it are definitely a certain type too.. it's a disaster waiting to happen. Makes me feel ill.

Seriously, can’t MN make a special dog haters page, so the rest of us don’t have see these miserable, now multiple starts per day, threads.

Oh do behave

ThisSummerBetterBeDarnGood · 07/06/2023 22:16

@AMonthOfSundaes how disappointing.

Wolfiefan · 07/06/2023 22:17

Glad I’m not the only one who agrees with Puffins. But what do we do? The government has zero desire to deal with this issue. It’s not their families at risk is it?
And I do love dogs. I have dogs.

ThisSummerBetterBeDarnGood · 07/06/2023 22:19

@WhisperingAutistic

Heartbreaking story there.
Is there a way to support that campaign or anything to sign??

We’ve got to put pressure on MPs etc

ThisSummerBetterBeDarnGood · 07/06/2023 22:21

@Wolfiefan we've always had dogs asking child and until a few few years ago.
Unfortunately our last dog was little and different attract some nasty dogs.
There dog actually made me feel vulnerable with dc.
I would eventually like one but it would need be small and easily excersise I don't think due to these nasty breed I could cope with waking in fields.

I'm scared enough for my dc at moment

Shhhquirrel · 07/06/2023 22:23

Mandatory insurance is a very good idea.

SmurfHaribos · 07/06/2023 22:29

I totally agree OP.
We were in a cafe the other day just quietly drinking and talking, when a women came in with a dog. The dog barked as soon as it came through the door and jumped up at my daughter who had shorts on and scratched her legs. It knocked our table and spilled our drinks. When I didn’t respond with joy to the dog jumping up my daughter (I didn’t say anything I just didn’t smile or stroke the dog, instead I ignored it and asked my daughter if she was okay), the woman said, “Oh, don’t you like dogs then?”. No apologies or anything, she just seemed out out that I didn’t respond positively to a random dog jumping up and scratching my daughter’s bare legs.

With the notable exception of assistance and working dogs, in this time of CLIMATE EMERGENCY, no one should be getting dogs anyway- they have a high carbon paw print and are a luxury the planet cannot afford.

Seriously, can’t MN make a special dog haters page, so the rest of us don’t have see these miserable, now multiple starts per day, threads.

The reason there are multiple, regular threads is because it’s a multiple, regular problem. Dog lovers are blind to the problem - I agree it’s very similar to Americans and guns, ignore the problem and say nothing can be done, it’s not the dogs fault, they are just being friendly etc etc

Maltedmilk23 · 07/06/2023 22:42

Screamingabdabz · 07/06/2023 20:07

Because of the sheer amount of deluded entitled dog owners who think dogs take precedent over humans.

I agree with you 💯 sick of people thinking dogs are more important than humans.

Wolfiefan · 07/06/2023 22:44

@SmurfHaribos that owner was an idiot. Their dog wasn’t under control and could have been reported as such.

But we shouldn’t have dogs due to climate emergency? Er no. Many many things contribute to our effect on the planet. Cars. Children. Importing food from abroad. Adding this to your complaint about this dog makes you seem just a bit mad!

Licensing doesn’t work. It’s been done. It failed.

Stop breeding- voila. Oh but no…. 😂$$$$
