Another dog attack

Unsure33 · 07/06/2023 19:04

There is a horrific video on twitter of a young woman being attacked in east London by three dogs

owner in hoodie , pit bull types .

I am a dog owner but also have ended up in hospital after a dog attack and it made me feel sick

honestly I think we need dog licences , dog wardens and more accountability because the current laws don’t seem to be deterring people letting dogs off their leads and having no control . If it prices some owners out I am sorry tough luck . Dogs are expensive and there needs to be some more incentive to keep them under control .

Fair enough. It doesn’t bother me about Staffys

But I’m for raising the general issue with a petition as these threads won’t do much

People can start a new one if not right

SunnyEgg · 07/06/2023 19:24

I signed a petition linked on here I’d recommend

Not sure I can link.

But google

Amend the Dangerous Dogs Act 1991 by including more dog breeds to be bannedAmend current list of banned dog breeds (currently 4) by adding the following breeds: American Bully - all kinds (XL, Extreme, Pocket, Standard, Classic), Staffordshire Bull Terrier, American Staffordshire Terrier, American Pit Bull Terrier, Bull Terrier (incl. Miniature).

BSL is the problem, not the solution.

God, this is SO true.

Yes I agree . The money could pay for more dog wardens or to pay for criminal prosecutions of the owners . Dogs are not status symbols .

how do we start a gov petition or is there one going ?

Sunny egg.

Agree.

I googled the petition though and its didn come up unfortunately. If anyones can link it again please do.

But... This id a chat forum so our chats don't really achieve much no.

Include the Staffie and English Bull Terrier on the dangerous dogs list 😂😂😂

Look at dog bite statistics. Cocker Spaniels, Dachshunds, not a Bull Terrier in sight.

I understand what you're saying, but I think when people say 'dangerous' they're referring to the potential lethality of the dog, not the number of bites.

You can be attacked 100 times by a dachshund and come away with minor, surface injuries. However it only takes 1 attack by a bull terrier to kill.

RudsyFarmer · 07/06/2023 19:31

I agree. I listened to an expert talking on the radio a few years ago saying the XL bullies in particular are a very dangerous cross breed. They are being genetically altered all the time through select breeding to make them more muscular. They tend to go for the throat and will rip the windpipe out.

There is no way in absolute hell I’d be trusting those dogs around my kids. I’ve noticed the one that used to be tied outside the school gate in the morning is no longer in the school run. I don’t know if the owner decided it was best not to or if the school made that decision.

RudsyFarmer · 07/06/2023 19:32

*few days ago.

Cincinnatus · 07/06/2023 19:32

I’m sure someone will be along soon to say it’s the owners, not the breed…

tbh I don’t really care

These threads go round in circles

Everyone outraged and nothing changes

I think it's the same poster under a name change. I have also noticed a spate of these threads in AIBU, when there's no "AIBU?" involved. The amount of irresponsible owners is awful, but I don't understand the need to point out every attack when the news is there for everyone to watch/read. Or at least put it in Chat.

Nope not posted before , sorry if I put in the wrong place I was just really shocked seeing the video . I was bitten on my back , on my arm and on the chest , years ago, but this really bought it back . Poor woman

What can be done about these people who raise dogs to behave this way and then parade them as status symbols?

Let’s face it; there are not many of these wandering unleashed in posh Hampstead. They are owned by people who generally are not wealthy. Is it part of a wider socioeconomic issue? If we eradicated poverty (never going to happen) would these attacks stop?

I dislike dogs but am thinking about it from another angle. Licensing won’t work. So it’s about making ownership not seem aspirational. Maybe Rishi Sunak should get one. Reduce the street cred of these dogs overnight.

bozzabollix · 07/06/2023 19:35

Why include Staffies and English bull terriers on the list for that petition? I own soppy Labradors but am aware that neither of those dog breeds are implicated. Lots of them are absolutely lovely.

Some owners of them of course are utter knobs. Maybe some more culpability for the dog owner as opposed to an outright ban is better?

Wolfiefan · 07/06/2023 19:37

Totally agree with Puffins. The problem isn’t dogs. It’s owners. But sadly the irresponsible arses who have dogs like this don’t give a shite about the law.
I love dogs. I have giant dogs. They are trained and under control in public. Always. They aren’t allowed to approach people they don’t know and I always move them out of the way of cyclists, runners or anyone who looks concerned by them.

Some times , yes , but this dog type has become a status symbol . Personally I think a dog licence is not a punishment , any responsible dog owner would realise the money could be used to improve the situation and bring proper prosecutions . I am not too worried about extending the breed list because that law is there and seems not to be working .

It’s easy to start a petition without those ones

I didn’t start it but saw it on here

It’s only just begun by the looks of it so anyone could do one with different breeds

CombatBarbie · 07/06/2023 19:38

I help out in a boarding kennels, we had an xl bully brought in as dad was working away and "mum" didn't trust him (dog was prior to this relationship) she brought him in, made out he was dangerous. We had to be extra cautious..... Turns out he was the softest thing in the world who just loved cuddles and attention. He would cry when I closed the main door on lock up.

"mum" didn't look happy when we all said he was adorable etc etc.

My point is, it's not the dogs, it's the owners!!!

ThisSummerBetterBeDarnGood · 07/06/2023 19:39

I've just looked at gum tree. I'm absolutely gob smacked by the look it those xl bullies. Absolutely disgusting theses dogs a re readily for sale.

One does say good with children!!

Yes , I agree . And therefore it must be clear who owns the dog . I know people will say they won’t buy a licence , but no licence then the dog should be immediately removed ( probably exclusions for OAP a and obviously assistant dogs )

@Elevel

The vast majority of staffies are huge softies. If we ban these breeds, what do we do with the ones who are well looked after by loving owners and are kept under control, that have nice temperaments? Do you want them wretched away from their owners and put down. Because as a dog owner, I would never get over something like that happening.

FrostyFifi · 07/06/2023 19:41

That video is really distressing, that poor woman. It would have delighted me to see those horrible dogs shot.

IncompleteSenten · 07/06/2023 19:41

Dog haters? Seriously? That's really not the case.
A dog is an animal. It's not their fault. Bad and irresponsible human owner hate is what it is. You can't hate an animal for being an animal. You can find irresponsible owners repugnant and want things to be changed to force them to take responsibility for their animals.

I wonder if we'll ever see a time when mandatory insurance on dogs that someone they attack can claim against is introduced. I would expect if such a thing was introduced, premiums would be breed dependent with discounts for evidence of training and stuff like that and failure to have the insurance would result in fines or the dog being taken away.

Well the police have powers to take cars away so paid dog wardens could remove the dogs if they don’t want accountability for the great responsibility that goes with owning one .

@CombatBarbie
So... Dogs are cute and cuddly and that's why were call them man's best friend.

Yes even the xl bully loves cuddles, and can be cute an loyal and soppy.

The difference between them and another one dog Is that all dogs are wolves.
They all have something called "instincts" these are what they are breed with and born with.

Even in fhe see text little poodle, one of day that cute cuddly poodle could turn kne bad day and bite their usually beloved play mate child.

They unpredictable. Then difference between the usual dogs and these bully dogs is that they can do tremendous damage and kill in moments.

Prescottdanni123 · 07/06/2023 19:43

@FrostyFifi

You do know it is not the dog's fault? I'd happily see the stocks being brought back and the owners put in them.

Wolfiefan · 07/06/2023 19:43

I think the breeding and sale of
dogs needs to be controlled. Breeders need to homecheck and ensure the potential owners can meet the needs of that dog. Owners need to be educated on the law and their responsibility as owners. Training should be mandatory.
