Another dog attack

Unsure33 · 07/06/2023 19:04

There is a horrific video on twitter of a young woman being attacked in east London by three dogs

owner in hoodie , pit bull types .

I am a dog owner but also have ended up in hospital after a dog attack and it made me feel sick

honestly I think we need dog licences , dog wardens and more accountability because the current laws don’t seem to be deterring people letting dogs off their leads and having no control . If it prices some owners out I am sorry tough luck . Dogs are expensive and there needs to be some more incentive to keep them under control .

I signed a petition linked on here I’d recommend

Not sure I can link.

But google

Amend the Dangerous Dogs Act 1991 by including more dog breeds to be bannedAmend current list of banned dog breeds (currently 4) by adding the following breeds: American Bully - all kinds (XL, Extreme, Pocket, Standard, Classic), Staffordshire Bull Terrier, American Staffordshire Terrier, American Pit Bull Terrier, Bull Terrier (incl. Miniature).

Just signed 👍

Oh god I'm going to be that person Blush we're not descended from apes, we share a common ancestor with them.
I can't believe I'm going to press post. I'm such a wanker. 🤣

It's all right. I was thinking it too. I can do the full half hour on common lines of ancestry over the past 500,000 years.

Withnailandeye · 07/06/2023 20:18

The breed isn’t the problem.

Let’s focus on the sort of bad bastards who have them - categorically all scumbags into all manner of crime. I don’t think that’s unfair either, they all the same type of scrote hoodie wearing dosser. Why don’t we address the elephant in the room and sort that problem out and the XL bullies will probs sort themselves out at the same time…

TwoFluffyDogsOnMyBed · 07/06/2023 20:22

@ThisSummerBetterBeDarnGood i totally agree that XL bullies should be immediately banned. I’m sure I’m over cautious but I usually drive to somewhere that I can almost guarantee there will be no horrible dogs. I avoid all city parks.

I don’t necessarily agree that all dogs are unpredictable though. I’ve got one that’s completely predictable who I direct any enthusiastic children towards. He’s a bugger for having nightmares and waking up in a real temper though….if he was an XL bully I wouldn’t be alive! I wonder if that’s sometimes the cause of them ‘turning’. Anyway, not to worry as he’s a very small bichon.

BlondeFool · 07/06/2023 20:26

Oh my god that video is terrifying. I hope those filming called the police or tried to distract the dogs. They were totally out of control. I hope she's ok.

I live near Alexandra Palace and I'm tempted to stop walking my dog (tiny) there as there's a few XL Bully's. They scare the shit out of me. You will not survive an attack.

70sTomboy · 07/06/2023 20:26

It's been said many times that these dogs are, in general, owned by a certain type of person. It's not Mrs Fforbes-Hamilton in her barbour jacket walking her dogs through the woods, but TJay in grey joggers with his hand shoved down the front.
He also won't give a shiny shit about laws. These types will find another breed or even another animal to look 'hard' or 'cool'.
There are no guns in this country, so it's dogs. Get rid of that, and they will find something else. like knives/crossbows although knife crime suggests maybe too late
I would also hazard a guess that in most cases, these families are already under the eye of various authorities, but being judgmental about lifestyles is against policy.

The people who would willingly obey laws to stop these statistics are also those who spend time and money on training and enrichment. I know people who have adopted bull breeds who have health or behaviour problems and spend huge amounts of time, energy, and money to ensure their dogs are not a statistic at the moment.

I'm an owner of an Akita, and we are at various classes, clubs, and workshops every week. She is a very people oriented dog and being trained in rescue techniques.

This. Sick of it. Yes, let's post about car crashes. Every single one.

That was a quicker, more succinct version of my rambling 😁

SnoringPains · 07/06/2023 20:37

I’m a staffy owner so I will defend them til
the end of time, but XL bullies frighten the life out of me. There’s one that walks in our local park and I won’t go in now if I see it when I’m out, it ran over to my toddler a few months ago and I’ve never felt panic like it. I’m sure it was only being friendly but I was so glad when the owners (eventually) noticed that I’d picked my son up and was trying to get there and shouted it back. I’ve also got a friend who has one, not the “typical” owner described here, a perfectly lovely and normal family with two young children and it really unnerves me that they have that dog around their babies. From their point of view he’s the best dog ever
and they can’t understand why I won’t take my kids over to play. They’re just too big and too capable of doing immense amounts of harm, I know I’d stand absolutely no chance if one went for me. In reality, the only dog attack I’ve ever been involved in was when a Cockerpoo attacked my dog, who thankfully did not retaliate or that Cockerpoo might not have lived to see another day. I avoid Cockerpoos now as well.

As much as dog licensing seems to make sense, the people who own aggressive,
poorly trained and out of control dogs won’t give a shit about getting a license, and the police are already at breaking point so are unlikely to make checking dog licences a priority. I don’t know what the solution is, for now I will just keep on avoiding our local XL bully, and of course any cockerpoos!

I don't think they're in the minority at all.

dudsville · 07/06/2023 20:41

I've just signed the petition mentioned upthread. Criminally inclined folks will continue doing their thing, but tighter laws would help. And it would make the other owners who just don't know better and aren't aware how to raise and care for these dogs think twice.

SunnyEgg · 07/06/2023 20:41

Elevel · 07/06/2023 20:39

ThisSummerBetterBeDarnGood · 07/06/2023 19:21

Wow I've just seen it.

I had a thread yesterday about what to do in a dog attack.

You can see one dog gets a hold of her arm.

I'm just not sure how she could have got it off.

We need urgent emergency law now to stop these attacks. Im absolutely disgusted.

@ThisSummerBetterBeDarnGood

Could you link the "what to do in a dog attack" thread.

It's getting to the point I'm feeling that I genuinely need to know this survival skill.

I wouldn't bother. Most of the suggestions are ridiculous and would just make the situation worse.

There is a vocal majority on certain threads. I would think most posters (myself included until now) ignore the millions of "another dog attack" threads. There is literally at least one with that exact title every week.

You are part of the problem. It’s nothing to do with hating dogs. Why are you so offended? People should be freely able to talk about it and share their horror and dismay about it without some dog lovers piping up about how much they don’t want to hear about it.

You should be listening loud and clear.

People don’t have to be vocal to show how they think they can just vote

And the large majority is yanbu

And yes they are every other week, they don’t do much, so all those posts could be petitions instead

Humans are not descended from apes. We share a common ancestor with apes.

TheoTheopolis23 · 07/06/2023 20:48

And fwiw human behaviour is pretty fkg ape like when it comes down to it.

Likewise dogs retain a lot of wolf instincts and behaviour.

Zero empathy for the young woman who was attacked, just thoughts for the inconvenience to yourself?

Wildflowersinthemeadow · 07/06/2023 20:50

I think I’m more tolerant towards dogs than most on MN. I don’t really care if a dog jumps up at me or approaches me.

However, the fact fatal dog attacks are rising is a source of concern to me. And I do think it is the breed.

And youll probably have a fourth and fifth time ....
