Another dog attack

232 replies

Unsure33 · 07/06/2023 19:04

There is a horrific video on twitter of a young woman being attacked in east London by three dogs

owner in hoodie , pit bull types .

I am a dog owner but also have ended up in hospital after a dog attack and it made me feel sick

honestly I think we need dog licences , dog wardens and more accountability because the current laws don’t seem to be deterring people letting dogs off their leads and having no control . If it prices some owners out I am sorry tough luck . Dogs are expensive and there needs to be some more incentive to keep them under control .

Yes , I agree . And therefore it must be clear who owns the dog . I know people will say they won’t buy a licence , but no licence then the dog should be immediately removed ( probably exclusions for OAP a and obviously assistant dogs )

There's no point targeting ALL dog owners and breeds though. It would never go through parliament and would be impossible to police.

Specific breeds should be targeted with licences and mandatory training.

FrostyFifi · 07/06/2023 19:44

You do know it is not the dog's fault? I'd happily see the stocks being brought back and the owners put in them

Might not be the dog's "fault" in the sense of human intent but they're the ones doing the biting, and the ones that will continue to pose a danger until they are destroyed.

Unsure33 · 07/06/2023 19:45

IncompleteSenten · 07/06/2023 19:41

Dog haters? Seriously? That's really not the case.
A dog is an animal. It's not their fault. Bad and irresponsible human owner hate is what it is. You can't hate an animal for being an animal. You can find irresponsible owners repugnant and want things to be changed to force them to take responsibility for their animals.

I wonder if we'll ever see a time when mandatory insurance on dogs that someone they attack can claim against is introduced. I would expect if such a thing was introduced, premiums would be breed dependent with discounts for evidence of training and stuff like that and failure to have the insurance would result in fines or the dog being taken away.

Yes good idea . A very minimum insurance for third party damage could be included with the licence .

surely there should be some ideas because it’s not right that in some areas people must be scared to walk out of their homes ?

@Unsure33 the law already says dogs must be chipped. They must be under control in public. If a person feels they could be injured by a dog then it’s deemed dangerous and can be taken.
The law is there. But it isn’t working.
@ThisSummerBetterBeDarnGood dogs aren’t wolves.

I know what you are saying but there needs to be money put in to support more dog wardens etc . Perhaps a scaled fee on the licence ?

All dogs are descend from wolves.

Elevel · 07/06/2023 19:48

@Elevel

The vast majority of staffies are huge softies. If we ban these breeds, what do we do with the ones who are well looked after by loving owners and are kept under control, that have nice temperaments? Do you want them wretched away from their owners and put down. Because as a dog owner, I would never get over something like that happening.

@Prescottdanni123 I don't know if you meant to tag me, but I agree with you. I've mostly owned Staffies which is why I said I wouldn't sign a petition aiming to ban them.
I do think the majority (at least) of dog attacks are the fault of the owner. I know more than one pitbull owner and would never dream of reporting them! The dogs are lovely, I've come across more aggressive terriers.
I would happily own many banned breeds if it wasn't illegal, most make brilliant family dogs if trained and handled properly.

AMonthOfSundaes · 07/06/2023 19:48

These dogs are bred by criminals in order to launder drug and gun money, in conditions that lead to physical and mental instability. They are often mutilated, neglected, passed from pillar to post until they land up coming across someone innocent who bears the brunt of their malformed lives. If they don't, they are then bred by someone stupid and their offspring are equally unstable.

If we're going to have the police do anything to reduce this problem, I'd have them get the resources to tackle the problem at source: known criminals should not be able to do this to start with. They'd be found, prosecuted, incarcerated in such a way they do not have access to (illegal) mobile phones to organise their puppy breeding 'enterprise' from inside prison. Hundreds (thousands) of poorly bred, abused puppies released into wider society every year. Poor genetics. Poor socialisation. No chance.

Yes I know . That’s what I am saying . If the law is not working what else can be done ? I don’t know the answers . I bet those dogs today may not have been chipped . I could be wrong but …….

Op first xl bully need immediate banning and culling. Now.
2 laws to prosecute anyone's owning or trying to sell one.

  1. Teeth to it... Big drive from police and rspca.. Phone lines for anonymous reporting... Bag up to make it a pain and keep going for a long time.

The poor woman. I’ve never seen a dog attack before and that was shocking. Especially when it was trying to shake her. These big powerful breeds need to be banned.

I am not a dog hater I am a dog lover , but these irresponsible owners are getting the rest of us a bad name something has to be done . Is that not what mumsnet is for to try and get things changed ? No licence dog taken , no insurance, dog taken , no chip dog taken .

No licence dog taken , no insurance, dog taken , no chip dog taken .

It's a good idea to reintroduce licences that require proof of a basic level of competency to own a dog - but - I fear it won't have much of an impact on the type of person who uses bully type dogs as an ego boost - because they're not bothered about the dog, they'll get a fine but probably be paying it at a £1 a week, and will just go out and get another one from a backstreet breeder and start again. And banning them will just make them all the more attractive because they'll increase their status symbolism.
It's not essentially the dogs that are the issue, rather what they represent and that's what needs tackling really.
I'm not saying there's no point doing it, not that they shouldn't be banned because I think they should, but I don't think it'd address the root of the issue which is a certain type of person, not a dog.

bugaboo218 · 07/06/2023 19:52

I am a dog lover, but these pit bull/ XL bully type dogs need to banned and banned now!

All dog owners should have to undergo a stringent vetting process before being awarded a dog licence at their own expense (unless disabled /SN and having an assistance dog) and only receive their dog license if they are deemed competent by an examiner/ test.

The above may not stop all irresponsible dog owners and all dog attacks, but it could make people really think twice about getting and being responsible for a dog longer term.

Those owner’s who refuse to licence their dog should be criminalised and face a huge fine.

yes, draconian measures, but worth it if it helps stops dangerous out of control dogs with irresponsible owners attacking innocent people and other dogs.

So really not other dog owners paying , just more money ? But I am sure most people would think there are more important areas that need attention . But not if that had been another child today ) :

I've posted before about my brother's dog, a Cane Corso. She has been trained since she was a puppy and is very obedient and does as she's told without question.

Do the people who own these breeds have them fully trained and not allow them off the lead in public?

Seriously, can’t MN make a special dog haters page, so the rest of us don’t have see these miserable, now multiple starts per day, threads.

What, a separate area for the 92% who agree?
OR how about this: the small number of idiots who value dogs more than humans should be confined to a separate area

Elevel · 07/06/2023 19:25

I wouldn't sign anything trying to get Staffies banned.

@Elevel

me either!!

Banning doesn't work anyway, partly because they can't ID half the breeds & because they just come back with new breeds.

Years ago people wanted German Shepards banned. 🙄🙄

Banning and/or licensing does not work.

look at the Thugs that own out of control dogs, do you really think they're going to care about licensing/training??

nope you just punish responsible owners.

@ThisSummerBetterBeDarnGood

So responsible, loving owners have their beloved pet dragged away and killed? It is not the dog that is the problem. It is the type of irresponsible owner who doesn't care for them properly and just uses them as a status symbol.
