Mistake by Tesco - do I tell them

Kedece2410 · 16/05/2023 21:38

So the other day Tesco notified me the van with my order had broken down & my order would probably need rescheduled

2 hours later - it arrived. Replacement driver, very apologetic. All good.

Next morning I receive an email telling me due to an unexpected error my order has been cancelled & they're very sorry & have issued a refund

Today, the full amount has been refunded - £120

My sister is horrified I'm not phoning them to let them know. Everyone else says I'd be mad to

Thoughts??

YABU - Course you should let them know
YANBU - The profits Tesco make, they can afford £120

No, it’s their mistake.

iamtheblcksheep · 16/05/2023 21:41

The card machines weren’t working properly in Sainsbury’s last week. It was utter chaos and the staff were being super rude. My card went through even though they said it wouldn’t.

The money never came out of my bank. The only thing I’m sorry about is not having more in my trolley

SnackSizeRaisin · 16/05/2023 21:41

Technically it is theft if you don't return the money. It is a mistake that they sent it to you - you aren't allowed to just keep it.

Heckythump1 · 16/05/2023 21:41

I had similar happen with Asda.
I sent back a substitution and rather than cancelling and refunding the one item, the whole order was cancelled and refunded.
I didn't say anything!

BleakMostly · 16/05/2023 21:42

I'd leave it for now, it would be a huge hassle to get in touch with them about it. They might notice and get back to you anyway? They balance the books on their end I'm sure.

TomatoSandwiches · 16/05/2023 21:43

You know it's wrong, phone them and correct the mistake.

RedFloweringGum · 16/05/2023 21:44

Tescos are robbing bastards (as they say) so I would have absolutely no worries about their error. Horrid supermarket.

LlamaFace19 · 16/05/2023 21:44

I'd worry that they would find out about it and chase you up.

Floralnomad · 16/05/2023 21:44

They will likely take it back in a few days

tattychicken · 16/05/2023 21:45

I'd put the £120 aside for a few weeks in case they want it back. Other than that, keep it.

Let Tesco’s ‘correct’ their own bloody mistake.

TenThousandSpoons · 16/05/2023 21:45

I would probably tell them, but really hope they let me just keep it, after thanking me for my honesty 🤞

LlamaFace19 · 16/05/2023 21:45

@RedFloweringGum how are they any worse than any other supermarket? Not being goady, genuinely curious.

Casilero · 16/05/2023 21:48

How would you even rectify their mistake? By wasting even more time with their awful customer service? Nah, I couldn't be bothered with that.

Daydreamer123456 · 16/05/2023 21:50

Nah, it’s their mistake so I wouldn’t be going out of my way to correct it.

I went to a local butchers recently and they hadn’t charged me for something I’d bought- I went straight back to tell them.

Tesco- not a chance in hell I would’ve done the same-would just keep me fingers crossed they don’t notice

Because of errors by the delivery company I once had three cases of wine from Laithwaites instead of 1, when I phoned them they said it was easier to keep them than return them!

Spiderboy · 16/05/2023 21:52

How old are you? Just tell them and pay for your shopping. Deary me.

ohdearohdearwhatsnext101 · 16/05/2023 21:53

Just keep it! You don't keep an eye on your bank statements anyway 😉

LeoDiCapricorn · 16/05/2023 21:56

A few years ago a Tesco van reversed into my mum's garden wall and knocked it over. The disaster of getting it sorted was terrible, they really were horrible.

So keep that money they don't deserve it for how awful they were to my poor mum. Yeah I know it doesn't really work that way. But feck em

nicericey · 16/05/2023 21:57

If you tweet them they'll let you keep it anyway. You are but a tiny drop in a massive ocean to them.

LakeTiticaca · 16/05/2023 22:03

Nah keep it quiet. Chances are they won't even realise their mistake. Enjoy your lite windfall. They make enough profit 😉

MrFlobby · 16/05/2023 22:04

🤣🤣 Gutted… should have gone back round.

Ohwhatsoccurring · 16/05/2023 22:05

The way I see it is, if they had made the mistake the other was round i.e charged you twice would you accept that as "their mistake" or would you be on the phone to complain? If you would accept that mistake too then keep the money if not you know what you need to do.

TeaAndTwoSugars · 16/05/2023 22:05

There's every chance they will take it back so I'd keep it to one side for a month.
No I wouldn't tell them though lol.

daffodilandtulip · 16/05/2023 22:06

I'd worry that I'd spend hours giving it back and then another department would realise their mistake and take it as well 🤷‍♀️
