Mistake by Tesco - do I tell them

Kedece2410 · 16/05/2023 21:38

So the other day Tesco notified me the van with my order had broken down & my order would probably need rescheduled

2 hours later - it arrived. Replacement driver, very apologetic. All good.

Next morning I receive an email telling me due to an unexpected error my order has been cancelled & they're very sorry & have issued a refund

Today, the full amount has been refunded - £120

My sister is horrified I'm not phoning them to let them know. Everyone else says I'd be mad to

Thoughts??

YABU - Course you should let them know
YANBU - The profits Tesco make, they can afford £120

You know it's wrong, phone them and correct the mistake.

These posts made me laugh.

I'm not going to spend my spare time correcting somebody else's mistake. Life is short.

Inthedarkagain · 17/05/2023 22:38

To those saying its theft, I now have an image of Tesco in court "the customer stole the £120" "How did she steal it?", "Er, we put it into her account......."😀

😂I'm judging people for not keeping quiet about it.

If you are an honest person, tell them.

If you are a dishonest person, don't tell them.

You know how you live your life, what lights you were raised by and how you raise your children.

If you're not sure if you are honest or dishonest-then your reaction to this scenario will give you an insight into your character.

If you are comfortable being dishonest, then don't tell them.

Make sure you tell your children if you were honest or dishonest, so that they can follow in your footsteps. If you decide to be dishonest but don't want to set this example to your children, then you know that dishonesty is wrong and it will play on your conscience.

EasterBreak · 17/05/2023 23:28

Tesco can spare that op, you need it more than them

HowToLearnToLoveMyself · 17/05/2023 23:36

Had this with an ikea furniture delivery. The furniture was all delivered and we built it 3 weeks later over £900 went back into my account.
I admit i did go into store as its close to where i worked and they said they wouldn't know how to rectify it so not to worry, so i didn't

But anything else i probably wouldn't say anything. Especially the likes of tesco where I've had out of date delivered and trying to speak to someone on the phone is like getting blood out of a stone

Ffs a few comments in there's always one. I'm sure tesco will survive being 120 quid down 😂

Christ almighty the piousness here is embarrassing.

Interesting replies. So two thirds of voters have not enough personal integrity to advise doing the right thing. Sad reflection of society.

I'm sure if it was small business they'd be offering different advice, not a company that screws suppliers, employees and customers out of every last penny and then rubs everyone's noses in it with their annoying adverts.
And they're not as bad as Asda, whose van hit my car, and then drove off, and they've lied and lied and lied again. If I didn't have CCTV showing the whole thing I would never have known who caused the damage, and it was such aggro to sort.

It'd take about £120 of anyone's time trying to get through to a human who could actually help.

yourenottheboss · 18/05/2023 01:59

If it was a small family owned business I'd tell them.

As it's a huge company that makes a fortune then I wouldn't.

Just think of it as compensation for having to wait around!

Lolabear38 · 18/05/2023 02:23

If it was me, I’d set the £120 aside for a while just in case they asked for it back. If they didn’t, and assuming you can afford to, I’d give at least some of it to a food bank and then keep some of it to take my kids out for fish & chips or an ice cream or something.

Densol57 · 18/05/2023 02:30

Act confused 🤣
Always works a treat !

Oldsu · 18/05/2023 03:28

A few years ago an online pet food company sent me the dog food I had ordered plus 3 large bags of dog food that were not even suitable for my dogs I contacted them and they said they would send a courier to take it back but they didn't so contacted then again and again they didn't send a courier, so I emailed the MD and told him as they hadn't collected it I was going to donate it to the local RSPCA and gave them the address in case they wanted to check a neighbour took it to them and gave my details and the reason why, a week later I got two letters one from the RSPCA thanking me and one from the Pet food company giving me a voucher to spend with them and a nice letter apologising for the inconvenience and saying they were also going to donate some food to the same RSPCA (which they did) TBH I am not sure I would have done this if it had been food suitable for my dogs but would like to think I would have

Houseofpainjumparound · 18/05/2023 06:26

If you didn't want to go through the hassle of trying to pay for goods you did recieve , if the money isn't taken again you could donate all or some of it to a local homeless or feed the hungry charity?

Inthedarkagain · 17/05/2023 22:24

All of the supermarkets have been fleecing us with so called inflation. They have definitely used it as an excuse. I can also confirm they treat their staff like utter shit.

Keep it and if they email you just say you haven't checked your account and didn't notice.

It if it was a small retailer i'd give it back, but not a large one that has been found to be ripping its customers off.

My Tesco doesn’t treat its staff like shit. I never got loads of free food and proper breaks in my old job. As a young person it’s much better pay and conditions than bar work even if it’s not cool.

LaDamaDeElche · 18/05/2023 07:17

Moral compasses of some on MN are funny. If your child is one day over the age limit for a theme park you’re dishonest not to say, report your own mother for claiming benefits and having her boyfriend live with her, but get paid in error from a supermarket, all good 😂 You’re either a bastion of morality or you’re not. You can’t cherry pick dear moral people of MN 😁

LaDamaDeElche · 18/05/2023 07:24

This, it's just basic honesty.

I once found a wodge of cash in an ATM. I took it into the attached bank. Moments later a distressed man ran in, it was his xmas shopping money for his kids presents. He thanked me profusely.

At the time I really did not think he had anything at all to thank me for. It looks like a lot of people here would have just kept the money as it was his mistake. Tesco may be a company but it is still their money.

Sad that morals have declined so much.

123becauseicouldntthinkofone · 18/05/2023 13:51

This happened to me and when I phoned them to correct it they couldnt take the money as they couldnt link it to anything without creating a new order which they wouldnt be able to receipt without delivering and was on the phone for around 45 which they told me not to bother with it

That would have been taking from a person who’d made a clear mistake, not a £56bn multinational who handed you the cash, technically.

I agree.

@Panteranoir It really isn't the same.

PenguinSalad · 18/05/2023 14:34

I once purchased a kindle from Tesco for a similar amount, and honestly I never noticed they hadn't taken the payment out of my bank. It was an online purchase.
6 months later they contacted me saying their was an error and could I please pay. Only then did I check back and see Id never paid. So I said nope can't afford it now, what do you wanna do about it? Never heard from them again.

sillyonehetpes · 18/05/2023 14:47

@Panteranoir different situation and 95% of the people should and will act like you did

Cityzen74 · 18/05/2023 14:49

I haven't read any other posts @Kedece2410 but this happened to me. I did ring them to tell them and they were actually unable to take the money back. The person I spoke to on the phone just said not to worry about it!

The two things are not even remotely comparable. I’ve chased after someone with their cash many a time.
