Mistake by Tesco - do I tell them

Kedece2410 · 16/05/2023 21:38

So the other day Tesco notified me the van with my order had broken down & my order would probably need rescheduled

2 hours later - it arrived. Replacement driver, very apologetic. All good.

Next morning I receive an email telling me due to an unexpected error my order has been cancelled & they're very sorry & have issued a refund

Today, the full amount has been refunded - £120

My sister is horrified I'm not phoning them to let them know. Everyone else says I'd be mad to

Thoughts??

YABU - Course you should let them know
YANBU - The profits Tesco make, they can afford £120

£120 is nothing to Tesco. They get rich by ripping people off and underpaying staff.

The card machines weren’t working properly in Sainsbury’s last week. It was utter chaos and the staff were being super rude. My card went through even though they said it wouldn’t.

The money never came out of my bank. The only thing I’m sorry about is not having more in my trolley

Give it time

Technically it is theft if you don't return the money. It is a mistake that they sent it to you - you aren't allowed to just keep it.

No it's not.

Stop lying,

sillyonehetpes · 17/05/2023 00:26

Nope don't waste your time

Do pay it forward though and get food for a food bank!

MysteryBelle · 17/05/2023 00:33

Of course you should call them and pay for your order which you received.

Integrity is what you do when you think no one’s watching.

SkankingWombat · 17/05/2023 00:34

I would have said call them, but after a recent experience of trying to do The Right Thing, I'm not sure I could be bothered with the hassle.
I had an order go missing in the postal system in November. I contacted the retailer, who investigated, confirmed it was lost, and sent me another order. All good! Several months later, an unexpected parcel arrived - the 'lost' order... 15 mins to get through to customer services (annoying) to be asked to return it (not a problem!), and that an email had been sent with instructions. The email took a good number of hours to arrive, meaning the free window of time I had set aside to sort the issue had passed, and when I looked, they expected me to print a label (had a printer but no ink at that time), then arrange a collection slot and wait in for it. Erm, nope! It is wintery stuff, so the box is now sat in my loft until they either come to claim it in a more reasonable manner or late autumn/colder weather arrives (whichever is first!).

Nanny0gg · 17/05/2023 00:34

'Minor losses are factored in'

Yes they are - into the prices!

ALL losses are factored into the margins, including theft, shoplifting and mistakes.

So go ahead but it won't be Tesco that pays for it.

pickd · 17/05/2023 00:44

Honestly quite surprised nobody's made any "every little helps!" references...

ItsBritneyBitchhhh · 17/05/2023 00:52

Happy days! I wouldn’t say a thing

saltinesandcoffeecups · 17/05/2023 01:24

Interesting…. I wonder what the crossover between the posters in this thread who are saying “their mistake good fortune for you” and the ones in the “finders keepers” thread a couple of weeks ago disparaging a young lady for not walking door to door trying to find the owner of a lost piece of jewelry is.

GracePalmer33 · 17/05/2023 02:05

Your sister is horrified?!? Haha tell her to get a grip.

That's theft BiscuitHmm

JenWillsiam · 16/05/2023 22:43

This exact thing happened to me. 18 days later random charge for the amount.

THIS!!!!!!!!!

Same happened to me with Morrisons! 8 days later

SchoolTripDrama · 17/05/2023 02:21

@sillyonehetpes Yes it IS theft! If money is put into your bank account that doesn't belong to you and you spend it then that is theft by law! Many, many people have been convicted after doing exactly that!
Some for a few hundred, some for more. A man was on tv once after losing an appeal against a conviction for spending £500k which was incorrectly deposited into his account

Mistake by Tesco - do I tell them

Wishitsnows · 16/05/2023 23:01

I don’t check my bank very often so wouldn’t even notice if this had happened. I guess by the time I checked maybe they would have rectified it. I don’t think I have an obligation to check if someone I have paid has made an error

Surprisingly enough you do!

Mistake by Tesco - do I tell them

@Iceicebabytoocold See image I attached in previous post

DazzleMaRazzle · 17/05/2023 03:02

I would keep it, say nothing to them and tell sister that I'd contacted them and sorted it.
Many years ago, I bought some expensive domestic goods from Comets, the electrical store on HP, which I set up a direct debit for.
They never collected the direct debit.
Over thirty years later, I'm still waiting for them to start collecting it.

Dilemma19 · 17/05/2023 06:10

Spiderboy · 16/05/2023 21:52

How old are you? Just tell them and pay for your shopping. Deary me.

This! You should know better.

Shoxfordian · 17/05/2023 06:16

Sounds like you’re keeping it then op- you have no integrity

nicericey · 17/05/2023 06:19

Seriously just tweet them. It's very quick and easy and they'll probably let you keep it.

Mindymomo · 17/05/2023 06:19

I had a Tesco delivery once where all fridge food was missing, about £70 worth, driver said he would refund missing items. I went shopping to get the missing food, but whilst there my DS rang to say Tesco had delivered all missing items, trays were on another van. I rang them up to let them know I was issued a refund and they let me keep it as a gesture of goodwill and for the hassle it caused.

Shoxfordian · 17/05/2023 06:16

She has an extra £120 in her back pocket, and good luck to her!

Frogsdinner · 17/05/2023 06:22

They made over £1b profit last quarter, if you want to ease your conscience buy some things for your local foodbank.

SD1978 · 17/05/2023 06:37

You wouldn't accept if they'd double charged you, so no- I don't agree you get to keep it because someone else made a mistake. I see it as theft.

cocunut · 17/05/2023 06:42

Supermarkets make more than enough money at the moment and are one or the only businesses who genuinely would have profited out of Covid, yet are still raising their prices for farmers and suppliers. So no, do not pay them back. They have enough money and have been robbing working people for long enough. Don't line their greedy pockets, keep the money OP Grin
