Mistake by Tesco - do I tell them

Kedece2410 · 16/05/2023 21:38

So the other day Tesco notified me the van with my order had broken down & my order would probably need rescheduled

2 hours later - it arrived. Replacement driver, very apologetic. All good.

Next morning I receive an email telling me due to an unexpected error my order has been cancelled & they're very sorry & have issued a refund

Today, the full amount has been refunded - £120

My sister is horrified I'm not phoning them to let them know. Everyone else says I'd be mad to

Thoughts??

YABU - Course you should let them know
YANBU - The profits Tesco make, they can afford £120

Don’t be daft, it is not fraud!! Ffs

Yes, it is.

Tratjymp · 16/05/2023 22:43

Telling your sister wasn't brilliant.

Lockheart · 16/05/2023 22:43

It's not the crime of the century but I would probably try to let them know. As a PP said, if it was the other way round you'd be fuming!

JenWillsiam · 16/05/2023 22:43

This exact thing happened to me. 18 days later random charge for the amount.

Allthegoodusernamesareused · 16/05/2023 22:40

Yes, it is.

Get a grip, OP has not committed fraud when Tesco’s have fluffed up and refunded her incorrectly.

Beeinalily · 16/05/2023 22:46

I think if you tell them it will actually be extra hassle for them, and you might get someone in trouble.

JenWillsiam · 16/05/2023 22:48

Allthegoodusernamesareused · 16/05/2023 22:37

Well, it's fraud (dishonestly retaining wrongful credit). If it were me I'd have to take steps to return it (a criminal investigation would have huge implications for my career)but in all liklihood the error won't be detected.

No it’s not. It’s theft. Retaining wrongful credit is covered by the theft act.

You’re right. It’s not fraud. It is theft.

truthhurts23 · 16/05/2023 22:49

you don't have to be "honest" in situations like this, don't say anything ,
they will figure out the mistake on their own and if they don't , then good for you
see it as compensation for all the late deliveries and crap substitutions you've ever had to put up with it

SpaghettiSquash · 16/05/2023 22:49

YABU - of course you need to tell them. Morrisons sent me two extra items that I hadn't paid for the other day. I contacted them straight away.

That escalated quickly. Tesco aren't going to go to the Police because a customer didn't tell them they'd got an accidental refund ffs. There's not going to be a criminal investigation. At most they'll realise their mistake & reverse the refund 🙄

BleakMostly · 16/05/2023 21:42

I'd leave it for now, it would be a huge hassle to get in touch with them about it. They might notice and get back to you anyway? They balance the books on their end I'm sure.

How would it be a 'huge hassle' to get in touch with them?

A quick search has brought up both a phone number and a WhatsApp number to message them on. They also have social media where you can DM them. Tesco are one of the easier companies to contact. No hassle, huge or otherwise.

Haleso · 16/05/2023 22:55

I couldn’t leave it, I’d have to be honest. Give them a call, at the end of the day would you wheel a trolley full of shopping out of a Tesco store without paying for it?

briansgardenshed · 16/05/2023 22:56

It's theft.

The police might open a criminal investigation as I don’t think they are very busy at the moment , they have just taken a few more police officers on 😉😂

FancyFanny · 16/05/2023 23:01

It's their mistake and of course you never checked your bank account to notice the mistake - did you?

It's not theft because they made the mistake not you.

Wishitsnows · 16/05/2023 23:01

I don’t check my bank very often so wouldn’t even notice if this had happened. I guess by the time I checked maybe they would have rectified it. I don’t think I have an obligation to check if someone I have paid has made an error

Yep. If they were a tiny, independent business I would inform then and perhaps insist that they take it back but it's Tesco and they're not.
Yes morally it could be on the same wavelength but they're bloody massive and don't have to think about it.

shallwethree · 16/05/2023 23:03

Something similar happened to me years ago with a Tesco delivery (order didn't turn up so I was refunded but wasn't charged for the rescheduled delivery the following evening). I phoned customer services to explain what had happened and they refused to believe me, just kept repeating that such mistakes couldn't possibly happen. So I just had to shrug my shoulders and accept it!

TheUsualChaos · 16/05/2023 23:03

Supermarkets have been robbing us blind for the past 6 months so no, I wouldn't contact them. It's their mistake anyway 🤷‍♀️

Sarahtm35 · 16/05/2023 23:06

Bloody well keep the refund! If you feel bad donate to a food bank or something. Tescos don’t need the money!

Throughalookingglass · 16/05/2023 23:09

I would not say anything.
Its easy for your family member to be 'horrified' that you aren't intending to contact Tesco. Many people declare their truthfulness when it comes to other people's money. I wonder would she do so if it had happened to her?

adriftinadenofvipers · 16/05/2023 23:09

My conscience wouldn't let me accept it without letting them know. I've always felt that if you do something inherently dishonest, karma comes back on you.

Soapyspuds · 16/05/2023 23:12

They made £750 million profit last year didnt they?

They can probably do without your hundred quid.
