Mistake by Tesco - do I tell them

Kedece2410 · 16/05/2023 21:38

So the other day Tesco notified me the van with my order had broken down & my order would probably need rescheduled

2 hours later - it arrived. Replacement driver, very apologetic. All good.

Next morning I receive an email telling me due to an unexpected error my order has been cancelled & they're very sorry & have issued a refund

Today, the full amount has been refunded - £120

My sister is horrified I'm not phoning them to let them know. Everyone else says I'd be mad to

Thoughts??

YABU - Course you should let them know
YANBU - The profits Tesco make, they can afford £120

The big supermarkets make billions in profit and are completely taking advantage of people at the moment, putting prices up by a ridiculous amount.

KisstheTeapot14 · 16/05/2023 23:17

Tesco constantly - every bloody week - try to fob us off (online customers) with very short date products/rotten veg in the hope that we don't notice - I would have changed by now but DH seems to like the ritual of ringing up and getting refunds. I guess they do this to all online accounts, palm us off with duff goods.

So no, I have zero sympathy for the bank roll of Tesco. They take the proverbial all the time.

A friend who sometimes worked for Tesco on a freelance basis (doing a sort of coding/advertising thing, I don't completely understand her job) said everyone in her position hates Tesco because they charge freelancers £1 for sending them an invoice for work they've done. Obviously it's only £1 but for every invoice it must really rack up.

Apparently no other company charges people to ask to be paid.

That's bloody awful! Scummy bastards. 😡

Moveoverdarlin · 16/05/2023 23:24

Keep quiet, your sister is jealous she hasn’t had a free week of groceries. Tell moany sister that you have called Tesco and rectified it and they were very appreciative. Next time holier than thou sister comes round offer her one of your freebie rich tea biscuits as a gesture of good will.

KnottyKnitting · 16/05/2023 23:25

So if you made the mistake of paying them £120 too much- you would be happy if they said- " it's your mistake- let's keep it and hope she doesn't notice!"

dontgobaconmyheart · 16/05/2023 23:26

I'd call them, I can't see why you wouldn't.

Ultimately it isn't as though they can't see their own stock loss or movement of their vehicles or don't employ operational managers precisely to manage loss. They may contact you regarding it anyway.

Strawberrydelight78 · 16/05/2023 23:27

This happened to my ex he never let them know. But then went out and pissed the refunded money down the toilet. The error was noticed a few days later and he had to pay it back. Leaving him skint I took pity on him a few times and let him stay for tea. Said all he had in was cereal bread and some tins.

Nat6999 · 16/05/2023 23:28

Keep it & if you feel guilty, pay some of it forwards, make a donation to a food bank or charity.

Oh fgs it’s Tesco- bit of a difference.

Doubt they’re going to go bankrupt overnight due to a mistake for £120

Watchthedoormat · 16/05/2023 23:34

It would be the highlight of my week.
No way I'd be telling them.
I don't tell them when I get extras on my shopping that are obviously from another order either. One week I had two bottles of wine I hadn't ordered, another week I had 8 cartons of long-life milk. Last time it happened I had a hunters chicken dish😃

PromSeason · 16/05/2023 23:36

I had this happen with Tesco a couple of years ago. They made the delivery despite saying they couldn’t.

Then they sent me an email to say sorry it hadn’t been delivered and would refund, and refunded the money. They then took the money a few days later along with another email to explain the whole error and a £10 gift voucher. The whole thing happened before I’d seen the original email so I was happy with my tenner off. 😅

FluffyRabbitGal · 16/05/2023 23:37

Had a similar experience, Hermes lost a parcel of items I’d ordered from the HobbyCraft sale. As they would use Hermes again to send a replacement, rather than use a different courier I asked for my money back. 4 days later the parcel mysteriously turned up at my front door.
I rung HobbyCraft customer service who said that this couldn’t have happened as Hermes had admitted fault and they had issued a refund. I tried to find out whether I just returned the items or money but was told this was impossible! I then tried to return the items in store where I was also informed me they couldn’t do anything!! So I ended up keeping the items and giving the money I was refunded to charity! Such a lot of hassle to do the right thing!

Whatmeagain · 16/05/2023 23:38

I always think what would I do if it was the other way round and they’d overcharged me. I know I’d complain then which is why I always tell them when a mistake is made either way. In Asda a few years back they said a £25 gift card I was part paying with had sufficient for the whole shop - about £85. I spent ages arguing with them that I owed them £60 as I knew the card only had £25 on it but they wouldn’t believe me and insisted I had paid for it all. After over 30 minutes of arguing I did finally give up and kept the shopping but it wasn’t for lack of trying - and I must admit I did enjoy my free shopping though!

Thehonestybox · 16/05/2023 23:40

Why should you have to waste your time phoning them about it? It's their mistake, and yes, their obscene profiteering which is plunging people into poverty because their owners want more is disgusting. You should keep it 100x!

pleasehelpwi3 · 16/05/2023 23:41

They can afford it, and have probably overcharged someone else that much in the past. Ignore

almostoverthehill · 16/05/2023 23:43

I’m a honest person usually. Something similar happened to me a couple of months ago, I’m in a pretty shitty financial situation at the moment and it was a godsend. I took it that somebody was looking down on me and I needed some help 🙏🏻

ClairDeLaLune · 16/05/2023 23:44

Phone them and tell them. It would be embarrassing if they caught up on you and you hadn’t told them. They will probably let you off. We once received a load of extra shopping we shouldn’t have had (delivered to my mum’s, she didn’t realise), I called them to tell them and they just said to keep it.

TheOhGodOfHangovers · 16/05/2023 23:55

LlamaFace19 · 16/05/2023 21:45

@RedFloweringGum how are they any worse than any other supermarket? Not being goady, genuinely curious.

Somebody hit my mum’s car in Tesco car park and she wrote asking if they could provide cctv footage for her insurance. They replied and said no (fair enough, nothing says they have to) but then added a paragraph telling my mum that she should be more careful when considering where to park(!) Cheeky fuckers.
She wrote back and thanked them for their advice and added that after very careful consideration she’d decided in future to park at Sainsbury’s.

MsRosley · 16/05/2023 23:55

I'm a great believer in a sort of cosmic 'karma'. If you're actively dishonest, you're sending that energy out and inviting it to come back into your life in some other form.

Cactusprick · 17/05/2023 00:01

Christ no, just leave it!
It’s not a small business; they’ll cope just fine.
Just forget it and keep the money…Every little helps 😂

plasticpens · 17/05/2023 00:02

@TheOhGodOfHangovers

I like your mums style Smile

rach2713 · 17/05/2023 00:05

I ordered from early learning some toys for daughters bday got message from delivery people it was damaged and had sent it back so rang early learning and they reordered it but would come til her bday not a problem so the day before a parcel was delivered with the broken toy (the box was damaged so not broken) fine wrapped it up all good. Not got another delivery on her bday of the same stuff so rang them to explain and they said to just keep it or donate them as it was easier than sending back so my dautghers nursery got some new free toy's. But with tesco i would do what you think is right. Im pretty sure you aint the 1st person its happened to and wont be the last and im sure they havr already made it back times a thousand lol.

LunaMay · 17/05/2023 00:08

If you're going to be anxious they might take it back in a few days i'd just ring them and get it over with.

I once had a heap of extra shopping delivered along with mine - unattended delivery so i wasnt there to notice. Called the supermarket and they said they couldnt take it back, weeks worth of meat, fruit and veg free - made my whole month to be honest but felt bad for the poor person who would have had to ring up and say they hadnt got their delivery

Sunbird24 · 17/05/2023 00:19

I had something similar - was originally notified that all my items would be there, no substitutions, but when the van turned up there had been an issue and one bagful hadn’t been loaded so the driver refunded all those items. About 3 hrs later another driver turned up with the missing shopping, so I took it in then called customer service number to let them know, and they told me to just keep it all as an apology for the inconvenience, thank you for your honesty.

Interesting replies. So two thirds of voters have not enough personal integrity to advise doing the right thing. Sad reflection of society.
