Mistake by Tesco - do I tell them

Kedece2410 · 16/05/2023 21:38

So the other day Tesco notified me the van with my order had broken down & my order would probably need rescheduled

2 hours later - it arrived. Replacement driver, very apologetic. All good.

Next morning I receive an email telling me due to an unexpected error my order has been cancelled & they're very sorry & have issued a refund

Today, the full amount has been refunded - £120

My sister is horrified I'm not phoning them to let them know. Everyone else says I'd be mad to

Thoughts??

YABU - Course you should let them know
YANBU - The profits Tesco make, they can afford £120

Once after my Tesco order had been delivered, in bags, as was the way back then, I unpacked it to find whole bags of groceries that we hadn't ordered. In fact, it looked suspiciously like an order for a dinner party. I called to tell them and they said keep the lot. They weren't the slightest bothered that someone else was missing out - I was but I couldn't do much about that. They did presumably have to deduct the cost of the items from the intended recipients order.

A few months ago I saw a girl running out of our local Tescos with armloads of clothing, towels etc. The security guard chased her for all of 30 seconds, then gave up when another colleague told him to.

I don't think they would be bothered about your £120 to he honest. It's just theceayvit is with a big company- minor losses are factored in.

I'd probably do the same in your shoes. It's not honest but no one is being actually harmed by it and it's their mistake, not yours.

It’s theft, if you can live with that fine, but some poor person may get in trouble

Tescos are robbing bastards (as they say) so I would have absolutely no worries about their error. Horrid supermarket.

You obviously don't think they're that bad or you wouldn't shop there. Can't really have it both ways - either they are awful, avoid, or they are ok, shop with them.

MrFlobby · 16/05/2023 22:07

Oh yeah… don’t tell them. I have to park in a tescos car park to collect my kids from school (all agreed with them and school yada yada.) I’m there twice a day, 5x a week so spend a small fortunate on groceries.

The car park is 3 hour max stay no return within 3 hours. I returned 4 minutes before the 3 hour time limit was up and they charged me £110! Robbing bastards. I swore I’d never shop in there again, but alas… convenience and all that. So keep it for me and my bullshit ticket!

DelurkingAJ · 16/05/2023 22:11

I had this with a clothing purchase. I emailed them and was told to keep it. Conscious settled and happiness all round. It would make me twitch to not contact Tesco. But I would likely use email so my valuable time wasn’t taken up.

Hmmthatsgoodchicken · 16/05/2023 22:11

I had this with Asda, almost exactly the same situation.
I phoned them and told them. They never took the money back out and my conscience was clear 😂

brokenbics · 16/05/2023 22:12

Are you in the north west and was the delivery scheduled for Thursday by any chance? Had something similar happen.

FirstnameSuesecondnamePerb · 16/05/2023 22:13

Oh I wouldn't bother with a major supermarket. Even at 120 quid, I would reckon that they would have ripped me off more over the years with offers that wouldn't go through, or staff accidentally scanning stuff twice.

Hoppingmad231 · 16/05/2023 22:14

They will take it back.

TiredandLate · 16/05/2023 22:15

If it makes you feel better, they didn't refund me after I handed back a fairly expensive item (40 pack of cat food) as they brought the wrong one. So you can reduce your guilt a bit 😂

Your sister is being daft.

It's a victimless crime, OP. Enjoy your cheeky £120!

I dont think they will take it back. They generated the refund I'd imagine as far as they're concerned the matters closed. They even took the 120 points off my clubcard 😂

I've transferred it into another account for now

How come this sort of thing never happens to me? 😪

LlamaFace19 · 16/05/2023 21:45

@RedFloweringGum how are they any worse than any other supermarket? Not being goady, genuinely curious.

A friend who sometimes worked for Tesco on a freelance basis (doing a sort of coding/advertising thing, I don't completely understand her job) said everyone in her position hates Tesco because they charge freelancers £1 for sending them an invoice for work they've done. Obviously it's only £1 but for every invoice it must really rack up.

Apparently no other company charges people to ask to be paid.

Sarah2891 · 16/05/2023 22:22

I'd tell them.

MontyPyth0n · 16/05/2023 22:23

Threads like this reminds me that mumsnet is batshit at times.

It seems that committing benefit fraud is ok, as big corporates pay hardly any tax, but if a big corporate mistakenly gives you a few pounds worth of shopping, you should be getting life in prison.

MyEyesAreBleeding · 16/05/2023 22:30

I would contact them about it. This happened to me with Next, they I've refunded me 60-70 pounds. When I contacted them they were baffled as no one has ever done this before. They actually told me to keep the extra money (which I gave away to people close to me In need)

I know people say keep it etc but I just wasn't brought up like that. I wouldn't feel right about it at all. Do what your conscience can live with.

autienotnaughtym · 16/05/2023 22:31

Little corner shop - absolutely return it. Tescos - consider it a bonus.

SquigglePigs · 16/05/2023 22:32

I called them when I similar thing happened to me and they thanked me for calling but said they wouldn't re-charge me and to enjoy my delivery. I wouldn't have felt right not telling them.

Beaverbridge · 16/05/2023 22:34

Nah, they make plenty!

Lasouthpaw · 16/05/2023 22:34

I just always think honesty is the best policy. Its not 'batshit' as per a previous post.

To me, doesn't matter if its a big company, whether I think tax is dodged etc. It's up to me, as an individual, to do the right thing.

I'll teach my son this as well and have no issue being insulted or sneered at for it.

Having said all of this, they'll probably just tell you to keep it if you can get through to them!

This. Keep it for a bit OP in case they retrieve it back out your account and then treat yourself! It's their mistake anyway, what they gonna do - call the polis?

Allthegoodusernamesareused · 16/05/2023 22:37

Well, it's fraud (dishonestly retaining wrongful credit). If it were me I'd have to take steps to return it (a criminal investigation would have huge implications for my career)but in all liklihood the error won't be detected.

Very true, there is a post this evening about someone’s sister and benefit fraud and the grief she got for wanting to shop them.

OP - just keep quiet, they won’t waste their time trying to unpick the error!

Don’t be daft, it is not fraud!! Ffs
