Mistake by Tesco - do I tell them

Kedece2410 · 16/05/2023 21:38

So the other day Tesco notified me the van with my order had broken down & my order would probably need rescheduled

2 hours later - it arrived. Replacement driver, very apologetic. All good.

Next morning I receive an email telling me due to an unexpected error my order has been cancelled & they're very sorry & have issued a refund

Today, the full amount has been refunded - £120

My sister is horrified I'm not phoning them to let them know. Everyone else says I'd be mad to

Thoughts??

YABU - Course you should let them know
YANBU - The profits Tesco make, they can afford £120

I would probably tell them, but really hope they let me just keep it, after thanking me for my honesty 🤞

This.

A couple of years ago I got home from the Garden Centre and realised that they hadn't charged me for two plants. Came to £20. I phoned them up to explain and to pay the money. They were lovely and said it was their mistake so wouldn't take the money. The guy I spoke to did seem a bit gobsmacked that I'd phoned to try to pay!

TBH, I would feel really guilty and have to contact Tesco. Just because "they can afford it" doesn't make it OK to steal.

Emmacb82 · 17/05/2023 06:48

I can’t believe the amount of replies saying just keep it. At the end of the day whether it’s tescos mistake or not, it’s money that is not yours. Like people have said if you’re honest they are likely to say just keep it. The fact that you’ve had to make a thread to ask what to do tells me that you’re not comfortable with keeping it! Just phone them up, admit the mistake and be done with it. It’s the right thing to do

Trickofthetrade · 17/05/2023 06:53

Wow, I'm shocked at how many people think it's OK not to contact tescos. Where have our morals gone ?

Casilero · 17/05/2023 06:59

The people saying to keep it, myself included, have probably experienced tesco customer service. It really won't be a simple 2 minute phone call where they quickly resolve it.

FancyFanny · 17/05/2023 07:00

When Tesco double charge by accident, do they check and reverse the charge or do they rely on the customer to spot the mistake?

SchoolShenanigans · 17/05/2023 07:00

Trust me, they can afford it.

Enjoy the little win :)

And they won't even notice!

Motnight · 17/05/2023 07:01

I personally wouldn't trust Tesco not to end up charging you twice. Their systems when things go wrong seem to me to work very badly indeed.

bluebeck · 17/05/2023 07:03

I wouldn’t bother to tell them, it’s their mistake.

Fairyliz · 17/05/2023 07:04

If they are anything like most organisations I have to deal with nowadays you won’t actually be able to get anyone to answer the phone.

Interesting replies. So two thirds of voters have not enough personal integrity to advise doing the right thing. Sad reflection of society.

So better to waste their time and yours on the phone for a mistake THEY made, when you know what they will say (keep it) so that another customer who has not received their shopping can't get through as quickly?

ShoesoftheWorld · 17/05/2023 07:05

If we start having types of people/businesses it's OK and not OK to steal from/defraud/keep what's not ours, whatever you want to call it, there's the potential for quite a slippery slope. And whoever pointed out that it isn't Tesco that'll be covering the loss, but all of us in the form of higher prices, is right.

It's a PITA but contact them to return the money.

Onelifeonly · 17/05/2023 07:12

I've shopped at Tesco for decades. Overall I'd say they put customer relations ahead of correcting minor (to them) mistakes not in their favour. It would probably cost them more in staffing, energy and time than the average loss they make in these circumstances to put the mistake right. So there's no actual net loss. Your conscience should be clear OP.

nonsense. You can message them. It takes seconds. That is sufficient to show you’ve attempted to make contact but you are still required to tell them. You could also contact your bank.

it’s still theft.

JenWillsiam · 17/05/2023 07:17

The number of people that don’t realise it’s literally theft is hilarious.

Are you a lawyer? I'm gonna guess "no".

It's not theft 😂😂😂

Oh dear. Literally is.

Theft Act 1968. retaining wrongful credit.

Feel silly now?

Not at all.

Roselilly36 · 17/05/2023 07:27

i wouldn’t bother contacting them, no one has the time to wait to get through to a call centre. They might realise they mistake, but probably not, if they are that unorganised that’s their problem.

Casilero · 17/05/2023 07:28

In fact not even a teeny tiny bit.

Gh12345 · 17/05/2023 07:29

I don’t think there has been an error. If they don’t make their slots it may just be an automated refund process if it’s majorly delayed. So no I wouldn’t ring

Dedodee · 17/05/2023 07:29

Can’t stand Tesco. Keep it I say.

Floralie · 17/05/2023 07:29

I had similar but with a different supermarket. I did let them know because at the end of the day you've had shopping and a refund, whether it's legally wrong or not it is dishonest so depends what sort of person you are. Anyway they let me keep it anyway, guessing out of goodwill.

Spookysnake · 17/05/2023 07:30

Spiderboy · 16/05/2023 21:52

How old are you? Just tell them and pay for your shopping. Deary me.

How old are YOU? Who says "deary me" these days?

Bearpawk · 17/05/2023 07:30

Tesco made a huge profit last q.
Assuming you can afford to pay it back at a later date if they follow up -
I'd pretend I hadn't noticed and keep it.
