Am I ruining the holiday?

DP has not said as much but I just feel bad.

We spent a lot of money on a much needed holiday as we’ve been super stressed - we booked a really remote, hot location with the plan being nothing but sunbathing.
We’ve got here and it’s freezing cold, and it’s expected to be until we leave. I feel gutted because a) we spent a lot of money, b) there’s literally nothing else to do and c) he suggested other locations that I said no to because I have been before, and I should’ve gone for them as they’re really hot right now.

I keep mentioning the weather, DP keeps telling me to “make the most of it”, “it’s done now”, “it’s out of our control” etc but I just hate being cold and there’s literally nothing else to do. He told me off for looking at the weather and told me not to look again. But I just am so annoyed. Also gutted as I packed only dresses.

Also, I really wanted a holiday for us to just get away from everything as we’ve been so stressed. I said let’s just put our phones down for the week, and let’s not talk about anything going on at home that’s stressful, and let’s talk about different stuff, but he keeps scrolling each time I even walk 2 metres away. He said I put too much pressure on the holiday by saying this.
I then got upset during breakfast as he wasn’t really saying much and he said he felt pressured to make conversation. He also said he’d had 3 hours sleep and I wasn’t being understanding.

I just feel like a misery guts but I can’t help but be upset, and I don’t feel like he’s understanding. Am I unreasonable?

where in Greece as mainland is about 25 degrees right now and the rest 19 so
not hot but not exactly winter weather lol

SophieinParis · 17/05/2023 12:04

Go do some historical stuff and put on a jumper! Read your book on the beach and have a drink.
I would also say that if you’ve been
super stressed then lazing around all day doing absolutely nothing would make you feel worse!

Is it only me that would rather sit on the beach in the pissing rain?

Nope

joycies · 17/05/2023 19:40

Sounds very much like he isn't bothered by the temperature so he can't understand why it bothers you. You have lots of reasons to feel pis.... off but don't you think it's still worth trying to salvage things? Wear one dress over the other and suggest envigorating walks - even if it's raining. then you will end up agreeing that life is basically unfair and you bit off a bit more than you could chew. Right now he is triggering you with his texting so saying no phones was beyond his boundary level. You being fed up and feeling guilty about the choice of venue and that's is triggering him. Also, don't forget 24/24, 7/7 is always stressful.

FiveShelties · 17/05/2023 20:38

Do come back OP and tell us how you are getting on. If you are on holiday of course, I can understand it may take a while.🙄

pimplebum · 17/05/2023 21:04

It's Greece not Easter islands ffs relax and make whoopeee

GeorgesMarvelousCalpol · 17/05/2023 23:04

Yes YABU, but I doubt you're bothered.

I think you need to switch your focus from being upset at dashed hopes to looking for opportunities to have a good time. I am sure there is some shop with cute clothes for low cost you can purchase so you can be warmer. Ask around or search the internet for fun indoor things to do in the area. It sounds like you wanted to lounge around in the sun. Okay, so is there not some sort of ferry ride or boat trip that can be taken? Or if you are inland, some dinner train or sightseeing train or bus that can be taken? Do they allow fires on the beach? Or is there some sort of heater that you can use? Like a patio heater, but designed for the beach? Ask your hotel for help, especially if you chose one close to the water. Right now instead of being upset you could be on some patio/balcony/beach with a hot drink, wearing a cute coat, a warm blanket on your lap or wrapped around you enjoying the stars or people watching or enjoying some other sights and sounds. Or reading that book you never have time for or making new friends if you are someone who enjoys that.

This made me laugh and eye roll.

Why are you "sure there is some shop with cute clothes at low cost"? When I went to Kefalonia there was no such thing! Fortunately we didn't need one.

And certainly no "dinner trains".

There's being positive mandlerparr, and there's making up a load imaginary things. You have no wisdom to share here.

"Cute coat" ffs 😂

Oh, and OP - cheer the fuck up.

RampantIvy · 18/05/2023 07:20

I'm glad I saw this thread before DD went to Greece. I warned her to take extra jumpers and wet weather gear. They are in the middle of nowhere, and there aren't any shops where she is, let alone any that sell warm clothes.

After the awful weather here they did want warmer weather there, so IMO it isn't at all unreasonable to be disappointed at miserable weather on holiday.

MarrymeJM · 17/05/2023 10:59

Why not? Have you tried to before?

@MarrymeJM

yes I have. And I don’t see how it could help OP. Op basically is entitled and allowed to be disappointed and to express those feelings but to then also accept it and make the best of it probably by drinking lots of wine in lovely tavernas. I don’t see how meditation could be helpful in OP’s situation.

@mandlerparr

this!

wearing a “cute coat”. Eh?!
we’ve been wearing coats or otherwise for about 9 months now, why the fuck would we wanna wear one on holiday?!

LuckySantangelo35 · 18/05/2023 11:41

chaosmaker · 17/05/2023 13:40

Nope

@chaosmaker

i would hate it if my main activity on a holiday was having sex

AlannaOfTrebond · 18/05/2023 11:48

I get the disappointment when you've been dreaming of lounging in a bikini in the warmth and that isn't what you get, but that's the exception not the rule at this time of year in Greece. May is a great time for hiking, cycling and exploring, but beach holidays not so much.

What is funny though is some of the suggestions PP's have come up with - have most of them ever been to remote parts of Greece, or most of Greece that isn't a large town or city for that matter? High Street clothes shops, beach patio heaters, spas? The PP who suggested a dolphin in sunnies hoodie had it about right!

I worked in Greece for many years, one year it rained every week during August, some of the staff and most of the guests ended up wearing bin bags to keep dry as there was absolutely nowhere to buy any extra clothes!

I'd be off exploring the ruins but the OP just seems to be unable to cope with disappointment. My option meant she could stay warm in bed and be distracted from social media .... I wonder how young the OP is?

midsomermurderess · 18/05/2023 14:29

What ruins should she be exploring? Did she specify where she is? Some people on here have a very limited idea of what Greece, quite a large, very varied and mountainous country, offers as a whole. If the weather is bad, often boat trips don’t run. Resorts rarely sell ordinary day-to-day clothes like jumpers and coats. Sun beds are often piled up out of the rain on the often pebbly beaches, cafes etc might even be closed. Yes, in Greece, or as a rather hysterical previous poster put it, GREECE!

Meditation can be helpful in all situations 🤷‍♀️

crackofdoom · 18/05/2023 15:07

midsomermurderess I know, right?! Some people have never been to a remote Greek island out of season, and it shows 😆

mandlerparr · 18/05/2023 15:19

Because you either wear a coat or are cold. pick one.

@mandlerparr

of course. It’s just you said a “cute coat”!

mandlerparr · 18/05/2023 17:41

That's subjective. It could be cute or not, depending on the person. I find most things cute or nice.

Jumper? Cardigan? Fleece? Poncho? Banket? Hoodie? Sweatshirt?

You don't have to add to threads, you know?

really?! Most things?!
for me there wouldn’t be anything cute about having to wear the same bloody coat I’ve worn all winter whilst on holiday in Greece!

mandlerparr · 18/05/2023 18:38

That is your business. Not everyone feels like this.

JFC, what are you going on about. Why do I need to type out of the different types of coats? pick one and get on with life.

1FootInTheRave · 18/05/2023 18:59

We once had a rainy week in Corfu in June.

Tbf, it was shit. Worse as it was sunny and hot in England.

We walked lots, took a pedalo out in the rain, visited corfu town and spent the rest of the time sat in various tavernas wrapped in towels to keep warm.

Basically made the best of it. It was disappointing though.
