I feel sick watching king charles

I don't want him as king. I feel sick watching a bit of the coronation this morning. I just caught a bit of it and I felt ill.

We are not subjects. It's 2023.
I don't want to be like an animal with an owner
I don't like the man. He has had so many scandals and bad friends. Why should he be allowed to rule over us.
This stuff shouldn't be going on in 2023.

Anyone think the same?

Exactly this.

I am ambivalent on monarchy v republic personally

The problem in this country is the absolute twats that we keep electing not the royal family per se

I made this point at work and was told that voted in twat is still better than not voted in twat.
Same for me since I haven't voted for any of the twats anyway, but I think people are way too optimistic about what republic would be like and who would lead it.

You're allowed to express your opinion, others are allowed to express their own in response.

Yeah... move to Russia if you don't like it Hmm

@springintochaos

He is the king of older white English Tory women

That's his main demographic

You've described me.

And I'm proud of that - can't help my age or my colour. I choose my political party - that ok with you?

No apologies here. Get over it

You aren't reported. You can say it. But it is really not a good thing to say. You thinking it's OK to tell people to eff off to Russia for exercising free speech, as is our right in a democracy, not a fascist state, is really awful.

Moooooooooooooooooo · 06/05/2023 18:35

Oh stop. The king is symbolic. He doesn’t rule anyone or anything. You’re not a serf. Times have moved on you know.

Jeez!

Sapphire387 · 06/05/2023 18:41

I'm with you, OP. The concept of monarchy in this day and age is grotesque. It's particularly awful to have this gross display of wealth and privilege at a time when so many are struggling.

There are loads of gross displays of wealth and privilege from cars literally made from diamonds to people spending thousands on clothes , jewellery and fuck off big estates.
At least this one is about the country rather than them as individuals. Yes it costs a fortune but it’s going back into the economy. Massive country wide events are brilliant.

I didn't say it.

I think it's fine for someone to say they hate the monarchy, and fine for someone to respond "go to Russia then".

It's all free speech and it's all allowed. You don't have to think it's "good". That's not a requirement.

CelerEtAudax · 06/05/2023 19:23

Mooshamoo · 06/05/2023 10:52

Are you usually a sheep? You never question people ruling over you?

But the King doesn't "rule" over us. That's the government which we elect at a general election. You did not study the British Constitution at school did you.

Gruffling · 06/05/2023 19:31

The gushing media stories about billionaires wearing matching designer tiaras are grotesque at a time when hardworking nurses and teachers are striking because they don't get paid a decent wage.

He's not my king.

Well it was only a 734carat diamond in Charles's crown. South Africa want it back apparently.

Sorry, went to make tea. Fair enough, free speech etc. but I'm sick of miserable people putting my country down, I love history and tradition & no country's system is perfect.

I'm normally very timid, so this shows just how fed up I am to have even posted!

Sceptre86 · 06/05/2023 19:55

It just shows how subjective it all is. To me he looked thoughtful, he's waited a long time for this day and obviously due to the way it all works his mum wasn't there to see such a momentous occasion in his life. If he truly believes it's his god given duty to serve the country then of course that's a huge responsibility and he could have been feeling the weight of it. Who knows?

My dh isn't interested so didn't watch. I have seen snippets after I came back from work. It's not my cup of tea but it's a special moment for the king and I can't say I begrudge him that.

Anyone democratically elected would be great.

Have you seen any of the twats we've elected lately?

Someone apolitical like David Attenborough would be a great head of state, as a democratically elected figurehead.

Ludlow2 · 06/05/2023 20:19

I think it is a burden to have such a responsibility.

Your whole entire life under scrutiny.
Who would want his role?
It does bring revenue into the country too I guess.

Don't like the hangers on though. Extended royals.

Also, Andrew just needs to go away.

BeverlyHa · 06/05/2023 20:19

he just does what he is expected to do , taking the nice money and the nice life and whatever else he has to do .....

Thats the government.
The tories frozen public sector pay for years and years.

Not the King.

Ruling over us? Honestly, get a grip. The government run the country not the king. They make the decisions. Get over it, your life won’t change.

I think it's fine for someone to say they hate the monarchy, and fine for someone to respond "go to Russia then".

I dislike the monarchy. I’d find it difficult to go to Russia as a lot of my family were shot there during the pogroms and the ones who didn’t get killed, fled for their lives. I’m not a fan of brutal dictatorships, but think it’s still ok not to like the monarchy either.

As someone who had to ask for help from the foodbank recently I don't really get it. Are wealthy people supposed to sabotage their wealth so we can feel better about our lack of wealth?

I just don't go around looking at wealthy people being angry about it or comparing my situation to theirs. The Royal family has always been wealthy. The coronation is a one time occasion that happens once and the timing was just really bad.

But it's also an important cultural tradition that is important to some people even if other people don't like it. The Golden coach already existed. Should they have spent money to make a more modest appearing one?

I think if you were going to be angry at a wealthy person you would be more productive to direct your anger to someone like Jeff Bezos who in my opinion very suspiciously profitted not only off of the pandemic but also off of the recent ridiculously high grocery prices. And while everyone else was suffering built a private rocket ship to space for himself. That is an obscene display of wealth if I have ever seen it.

That was a project that didn't have a specific time table. He could have paused that and did it at a later date unlike the coronation.

Great post!! There will always be huge wealth around amongst so many others who have so little. Getting rid of the monarchy would never change that.

I love all the pomp and ceremony that goes with the monarchy. I love that the history of the coronation goes back 1000 years. The 40th monarch to be crowned on that ancient chair! There was very little actually new.

I thought both Charles and Camilla looked nervous. They must have been literally terrified of something going wrong! Can't be easy taking on a new job for life in your 70s, and existing in that goldfish bowl. I don't envy them at all. He must have thought a lot about his mother too.

I don't know people begrudge them so much! Personally I prefer the RF any day over who we might get elected as a president... maybe the latest winner of Love Island... or Simon Cowell... 🙄
