To have made the birthday cake instead of buying a fancy one?

So a bit light hearted because it doesn't really matter but my my feelings have been slightly 'bruised' shall we say.

It's first DD birthday this weekend. I've baked her a cake today, in the shape of a 1, pink icing. Nothing fancy but I think it looks quite good to be honest.

We're having family round tomorrow for a bit of a get together. I sent a pic of the cake to the family what's app group.

DSIL has messaged back saying oh I wish you'd have told me you were baking yourself I would've ordered a nice one for her. Am I being too sensitive or is that a bit rude?

To be honest making her birthday cake myself is something I've been looking forward to and it'll be her first taste of cake so it felt special to bake it myself.

Should I have bought a nice one since we have people coming round?

@Flamingogirl08 I’m sure your cake is fab 😊 I always think homemade is really lovely!!
Although, I’m not about to turn down a slice of the M&S balloon cake either 😅

With any luck SIL won’t want a slice of your cake and you’ll get an extra bit for yourself 😂🤞🏼

I could have ordered nice pretty Instagram worthy cakes for both of my daughter's birthdays (she'll be 3 this month) but I've made both so far and will continue to do so as I love that I've made her cakes for her and will keep doing so!

Your cakes are Instagram worthy! Let's change insta with our home made birthday cakes and be proud! I made an awful one last year and all the icing ran off it but my little one still loved it

AdoraBell · 05/05/2023 22:12

YANBU. Bloody rude of her.

FunnysInLaJardin · 05/05/2023 22:12

@Flamingogirl08 I have always baked my DS's birthday cakes. It is non negotiable, even when DS2 said have you ever thought about making a sponge when DS1's cake was a bit flat. That has now gone down in family history!

My point is your cake for your DC will be far more special than any bought cake

Littlewhitecat · 05/05/2023 22:19

In my family a shop bought cake is considered very low rent - #teamhomemade

FunnysInLaJardin · 05/05/2023 22:20

oh and btw I am really a not very god baker. I'm a good cook, but cakes are not my thing. Even so they get wolfed down and everyone is always grateful, hence I love making cakes for my family.

CoffeeLover90 · 05/05/2023 22:20

Good for you, on all of you, for making your own. I'd appreciate it more than a bought one. I wish I could. My cakes taste good 😅 but I'm not the best decorator. Also could never get a 1 shale, bet mine would like a 7
I would see that as cheeky though

CoffeeLover90 · 05/05/2023 22:21

*shape not shale. See no attention to detail

😁my mum always used to consider bought cakes a very poor show. That was 45 years ago!

ejbaxa · 05/05/2023 22:24

Very rude SIL. That said, you must not let it go because otherwise you will signal to her that it’s ok to be rude to you and walk all over you. And then she’ll continue. I’d put on the chat - “don’t worry sil, the one I’ve made is a very nice one and I enjoyed making it”

PinkPanther50 · 05/05/2023 22:25

Your SIL is rude. Homemade cakes are much better. My mum made all my cakes and she made my kids cakes too. Mum baked and me and my dad used to turn them into whatever was required - I’ve done numbers, Nemo, princesses, castles, frogs, pirate ships to name a few. None of them were ‘insta worthy’ but my kids have fabulous fond memories of them as do I.

missingthewinchesterboys · 05/05/2023 22:27

Making my kids birthday cakes reminded me of baking with my Grandmother. I was determined to do better each year and taught myself so many skills that I've gone on to win several medals at cake international over the years.

That first birthday cake was not great but it meant a lot more than a shop purchase or a random bakers premix(that many, many 'professionals' use)

You SIL is a rude cow

hulahooper2 · 05/05/2023 22:28

It was rude but tbh I would prefer a shop bought cake as I have a thing about cleanliness and if home made there is no guarantee the spoon hasn’t been licked or an animal nearby ,

RunningRunningRunningRunningRunning · 05/05/2023 22:29

I thought you were going to say she said it looked like a penis when you said it was in the shape of a 1 and pink 🤣. Paying to have one baked to order is expensive but well worth it if you find someone good, it's only a 1st birthday so an expensive cake is probably excessive, if you can bake I can see why you might like to save a few £££.

Yeah that's a you problem though and not really relevant when the OP has made it themselves.

RunningRunningRunningRunningRunning · 05/05/2023 22:31

Also if you had a dog or cats I wouldn't eat it 🤮, I know other people funny like this too.

eggsandwich · 05/05/2023 22:31

I would say you wanted a birthday cake made with LOVE so you made one yourself as you couldn’t buy that important element with a shop bought cake 😁

JMGSinging · 05/05/2023 22:32

I guess your SIL doesn’t have children herself yet. I bought a very expensive birthday cake for my son’s first birthday, and baked him one for his 2nd. I much prefer the whole experience of making him a cake as it was filled with love. I will continue to bake cakes for his birthday.

Jk987 · 05/05/2023 22:33

I think some people are more worried about instagram photos and impressing others.

NoPlansToday · 05/05/2023 22:34

Regardless of which is nicer, her comment is rude and inexcusable.

We have done a mix of home-made and the large custom Colin cakes. My daughter wants a Taylor Swift cake for her 21st. Am definitely going to outsource that one…

Sugarhouse · 05/05/2023 22:35

I think it’s much nicer to have a homemade cake. My mum used to buy me my birthday cakes and I never enjoyed them I’d have much preferred a basic homemade one. I now always make my children’s cakes. I think it’s lovely to put the effort into making it yourself and it sounds like you’ve done a lovely job of it.

Newyearnewmeow · 05/05/2023 22:35

MissPoldark · 05/05/2023 19:46

She’s fucking rude. Buy a shop bought cake just for her and smash her face in it!!

Gosh!
This is vicious but made me laugh so much

fortifiedwithtea · 05/05/2023 22:38

I guarantee in years to come when your daughter looks back at photos of her birthday celebrations the home made cakes will be her favourites.

My kids are 24 and 20. I’m a veteran of birthday cake 😂

And your SIL is a rude cow

SimonsCow · 05/05/2023 22:41

I would just respond’ I know I’m no professional baker but I will always make DDs cake myself, it’s just a personal touch’
