To say that Diane Abbott is doing her best to help the Labour Party to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory?

Hideous antisemitism seemingly not gone away at all and add that to the horrendous misogyny in the Labour Party I wonder at this point why ANYONE would vote for them.

AIBU?

Quite frankly I cannot fathom how Diane Abbott is still a sitting MP.

Barbadossunset · 23/04/2023 12:04

Yes I was really shocked by her comments. What an awful thing to say.

Gazelda · 23/04/2023 12:04

I can't see how Starmer can let her letter today go without consequences.

Flowerly · 23/04/2023 12:05

Unspeakable really. David Baddiel on twitter has re-posted a clip of him talking about antisemitism which is excellent. She should watch it.

She's been detrimental to the party for an incredibly long time. She should have had the good grace to go when Corbyn did.

EllenLRipley · 23/04/2023 12:05

She's gone, about fucking time

Mimosa08 · 23/04/2023 12:06

Had the whip withdrawn

Hell121 · 23/04/2023 12:07

I can’t with a clear conscience vote for either of these shit shows of a party. Never felt more politically homeless and one of the main reasons we are leaving this country.

Mammyloveswine · 23/04/2023 12:08

Perhaps it will help actually posting a link to what she's said?

DonnaBanana · 23/04/2023 12:10

She said all Black people experience racism as a lifelong construct and white skinned people generally do not. She did not say that white skinned people never have experienced racism, just not universally and for “all their lives.” She may have been clumsy but do you really think Diane Abbott, a Black woman interested in civil rights, would be racist in the way people are painting her to be?

pointythings · 23/04/2023 12:10

What she said was awful and she's been suspended fast. She now needs to be deselected, enough is enough.

HeadNorth · 23/04/2023 12:11

In fairness, Keir Starmer has acted swiftly to suspend her pending investigation. Compare that to the SNP, where you can be arrested, but not suspended. I don't see what more Keir could do - he inherited this mess and has been doing his best get the Labour house in order post Corbyn.

As you can see from posts on MN, Diane Abbott has always been the wrong colour.

She is blatantly antisemitic in a party well known for its antisemitism. To suggest that people are racist (which i was I assume you meant?) for pointing this out is ridiculous. But utterly unsurprising on here.

I still think that, in respect of Jews and Romani people (for example), she is totally wrong and either ignorant of, or not accepting of, the lifetime discrimination these peoples face.

Therefore it is very easy for me to see why people are deeply offended by her comments and by why her apology that claims this was a case of "misdrafting" feels quite hollow.

In a draft of the letter she wrote that Jews face discrimination in the same way as 'red-headed' people.

Minierme · 23/04/2023 12:17

Yeah… it’s pretty stupid thing to say when millions of Jews were killed because of being Jewish. Seeing it only as a faith and therefore not something that you can be racially discriminated because of, is a common confusion though.

As an ethnic Jew who belongs to another religion I often wonder what to put in diversity/ethnicity boxes. I flip flop between white British which feels like my ethnicity is being erased or white other which doesn’t feel quite right either. I’d love to Jewish as an ethnicity acknowledged more.

I have always liked Diane Abbott, and she has been subjected to horrible racism throughout her career.

I cannot understand why she thought the letter she wrote was in any way acceptable. To mention the prejudice faced by people with red hair whilst writing about the racism Jewish people, Irish people and travellers experience is just totally gobsmackingly stupid. I cannot understand her thinking at all.
