Diane Abbott

To say that Diane Abbott is doing her best to help the Labour Party to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory?

Hideous antisemitism seemingly not gone away at all and add that to the horrendous misogyny in the Labour Party I wonder at this point why ANYONE would vote for them.

AIBU?

Awful. She's an absolute disgrace!

cactiminds · 23/04/2023 12:45

Flowerly · 23/04/2023 12:36

Anti-semitism has been (and still clearly is) a trademark of the LP which Starmer has been trying to eradicate which is why the focus is more on this.

Christ so because you think the Labour Party doesn’t have a history of racism towards the Irish and travellers, if she’d not mentioned Jews it would be okay? I think this proves my point even more.

Millicentmargaretamandaholden · 23/04/2023 12:45

FrippEnos · 23/04/2023 12:36

So which bits are you disagreeing with?

That I said that if you disagree with Diane Abbott you are a Tory. I didn’t imply say or imply that.

I was responding to the question in the OP “why would ANYONE vote labour”. I think what Diane Abbott has written is disgraceful, but it doesn’t represent the Labour Party hence she has had the whip withdrawn.

My point is Dianne Abbott is a single MP and the party have withdrawn the Whip. I’d vote Labour because I think the Tory Party are far worse. There are good fair reasonable people in the Conservative Party and who vote Tory but they aren’t the people running it at the moment and they aren’t fit to govern.

almostwarm · 23/04/2023 12:45

I think it's origins are the USA which has a very particular history and it has been applied as a blanket everywhere else.

SpeedSnap · 23/04/2023 12:45

The Irish population was similar to that of the UK and Germany, it never recovered to this day from genocide.

I can't see how Starmer can let her letter today go without consequences.

He hasn't.

She's allowed to have an opinion, but I don't see how she can remotely claim that she has experience to say that Jews, travellers etc don't experience racism all their lives.

Jewish schools in this country have shooter drills.

When my mum and dad visited my gran in her care home, they were locked in due to attacks going on outside - verbal and physical attacks on another couple visiting with their terrified toddler.

That's before you even get started on if there's a whiff of travellers being in the area.

Diane Abbot doesn't have a fucking clue, and by the sounds of it you need to educate yourself too.

I didn't mention anything about voting tory and its not in the bit that I quoted from you either,

I'm slightly confused.

DojaPhat · 23/04/2023 12:47

There's most definitely a hierarchy of racism though.

Maireas · 23/04/2023 12:47

AnElegantChaos · 23/04/2023 12:44

@almostwarm Yes this. 6 million Jews were not exterminated because of the country they came from.

....or their religion, or their occupation, or their hair colour.
The Nazis clearly labelled them "untermensch". They were considered "a lower race". It is that clear cut.

anotherside · 23/04/2023 12:47

No idea what she said, but the Tories have taken the country to the cleaners the last 12 years. Not a single thing has improved. Not the NHS, not schools. Not affordable housing. Not homelessness. Not living standards/the economy. Not foreign policy. It’s all got worse, absolutely everything. Virtually everyone is financially worse off in real terms, less healthy and less happy than before the Tories came into government.

So given we live in a two party state thanks to FPTP, that probably answers this and that’s why Labour are miles ahead in the polls despite being seriously flawed in myriad ways.

I wonder at this point why ANYONE would vote for them

Clymene · 23/04/2023 12:48

This is the article she's responding to: www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2023/apr/15/racism-in-britain-is-not-a-black-and-white-issue-it-is-far-more-complicated

It's about a report of a survey of racism in the U.K. which seems to demonstrate that Travellers and Jewish people are more likely to experience racist assaults than Black people.

To dismiss those experiences as somehow lesser is an appalling thing to write.

I suspect the fact that she and Owolade sit on different sides of the political spectrum has something to do with the letter.

Ironically, he has a book coming out shortly called This is not America: Why Black lives in Britain matter.

And by referring to racial segregation on buses, she's made his argument for him.

Flowerly · 23/04/2023 12:48

AnElegantChaos · 23/04/2023 12:42

I think it's a shame the route she went down, she was such an inspirational trailblazer and campaigned so hard against the racism that she, and others, was subjected to. I used to really look up to her decades ago. But she really went down the far left, StWC rabbit hole and found herself a home with some of the most appalling antisemites and Assad apologists. Today's event isn't a one-off from her. She should have had the whip removed after her pro-Putin comments last year. And her casual dismissal of the experience of Roma and travellers, currently probably the most persecuted group in this country, is vile.

At times her behaviour has looked nothing more than childish worshipping at the alter of Corbyn, and the cringe factor whenever I've heard her interviewed in the last few years has been toe curling. And to the PP above, yes, I think she's racist. Either wilfully ignorant of the centuries of discrimination and persecution Jews, Roma and the Irish have suffered, at best, or outright racist at worst. She came as close as she could to holocaust denial without actually saying it. Her own experiences of racism do not give her automatic immunity from being labelled a racist.

Excellent post.

LondonMummer · 23/04/2023 12:48

To those who think she said nothing wrong imagine if someone said what she said in reverse. Seriously. Just imagine that someone had said that black people experience prejudice which is similar to racism but not the same, it's more like the prejudice that redheads might face.

It would be unimaginably offensive.

And that's how I feel about her unequivocal antisemitism. Not for the first time. Early draft!!

itsgettingweird · 23/04/2023 12:50

GoodChat · 23/04/2023 12:05

She's been detrimental to the party for an incredibly long time. She should have had the good grace to go when Corbyn did.

Yes - she's detrimental to the party.

But she isn't representative of it.

No - I clearly did not say that. It is all vile but you are going to wilfully misunderstand what I say it seems.

Unspeakable really. David Baddiel on twitter has re-posted a clip of him talking about antisemitism which is excellent. She should watch it.

Baddiel is also a racist who did black face and thought it was funny.

SpeedSnap · 23/04/2023 12:52

Katharine Birbalsingh said everyone is a little bit racist.

You do realise that people who do not vote Labour are not automatically Tories right? And why blunder in to this if you don't even know what the thread is about?

I agree.

Yes because IMO for a lot of left wing people, being anti Semitic is seen as not being racist isn't it, partly because of the conflict in Palestine.

Depends whose civil rights she is interested in.

itsgettingweird · 23/04/2023 12:53

DonnaBanana · 23/04/2023 12:10

She said all Black people experience racism as a lifelong construct and white skinned people generally do not. She did not say that white skinned people never have experienced racism, just not universally and for “all their lives.” She may have been clumsy but do you really think Diane Abbott, a Black woman interested in civil rights, would be racist in the way people are painting her to be?

I didn't read it that way. I read it as black people experience racism and Irish, Jews and travellers don't experience it in the same way.

Putting aside definitions of race and what's religion etc it's not what she said but the very obvious undertones of her belief that their is a heirachy of isms experienced.

And a very clear message she doesn't believe Jewish people have suffered the same as black people.

It's the. Wry clear antisemitic message that's the problem. It may well have been poorly drafted but the sentiment is still clear.

BaronessEllarawrosaurus · 23/04/2023 12:54

She's also being very selective with regards to segregation because I can as sure as hell remember signs stating no blacks, Irish or travellers allowed

This is such a disgusting statement. You think he's excited to see another example of anti semitism? Do you say the same about Black Lives Matter campaigners?
