Diane Abbott

To say that Diane Abbott is doing her best to help the Labour Party to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory?

Hideous antisemitism seemingly not gone away at all and add that to the horrendous misogyny in the Labour Party I wonder at this point why ANYONE would vote for them.

AIBU?

She said that Jews experienced prejudice but then pointed out that they, unlike black people, weren't made to sit on the back of buses and were allowed to vote.

There was a quite recent attempt to exterminate them, but she didn't mention that.

ChateauxNeufDePoop · 23/04/2023 13:07

Even ignoring the party involved, I can't believe any politician would be dumb enough to write this. Hopefully KS's actions have helped.

What's wrong with how they used the word "whip". I re-read it in case I missed something but it just looks factual to me. What have I missed?

I wondered this also.

It's surprising that Abbott is making such an effort to separate groups subjected to racism. I rember her tweeting: "White people love playing 'divide & rule' We should not play their game."

Cornflakes44 · 23/04/2023 13:09

Do you really think that white people, who are Jewish, Irish, or from the traveller community experience racism to the same degree as black people? I actually think it’s extremely racist to suggest they do. People hate Diane Abbott with a passion I don’t think they’d have if she was a white man. She knows exactly how racism works.

Bluey124 · 23/04/2023 13:09

Can't stand the woman. But she will be reinstated. Course she will.
Labour are an absolute joke.

Yes, I don't think Jews actually got to choose their seat on the trains.

CaroleSinger · 23/04/2023 13:10

Is this the one who told us we should all be sending our children to state schools while hers were privately educated? The one who's son spits on police officers? The one filmed drinking alcohol on public transport? I honestly can't bear the woman. She has always been a bundle of ill timed contradictions and her endless persecution complex is just tiresome now.

I just read what she wrote. I probably don’t agree with her, but I’ve no problem with free speech.

“They undoubtedly experience prejudice. This is similar to racism and the two words are often used as if they are interchangeable….but they are not all their lives subject to racism.”

Again, not sure I agree with that, but I don’t see it as inflammatory/massively offensive - day to day in the UK, I expect black and Asian people are more likely to experience certain common forms of racism (ie being subjected to remarks or being treated differently) than are Jewish people, as the aforementioned groups are simply more visibly different from the white majority population. What she said was probably clumsily worded, and is probably a comment that didn’t even need to be opened, but it’s hardly the massive racist faux pas it’s being painted as.

Racism is prejudice against you for being part of a particular ethnic group. By claiming that Jews and other ethnic groups don't experience everyday racism like black people do you and saying it is prejudice but not racism you effectively denying that these ethnic groups exist as well as denying the everyday, centuries long racism they experience.

Her comments simply aren't borne out by fact and experiences of people from these ethnic groups. It is supposition based on ignorance of what these groups have experienced historically and continue to experience today, as is your defence of her words.

Did you see Joe Biden in Ireland last week? Wver heard of the Good Friday peace agreement?

Yes white Irish Catholics were hated that much by British prositants.

Florissant · 23/04/2023 13:11

The one who said that people she knows didn't want white nurses from Finland touching them? That Diane Abbott?

MaryCrawford · 23/04/2023 13:11

SpeedSnap · 23/04/2023 12:45

The Irish population was similar to that of the UK and Germany, it never recovered to this day from genocide.

And yet Laura Trevelyan, while falling over herself to pay reparations to those affected by her family's slave owning links, had the brass neck-when reminded of her family's direct involvement in starving the Irish-to say it wasn't the same and she wouldn't be apologising for that.

Cunt.

Racism against the Irish exists, as it does against the Jews and cannot be dismissed although by the likes ofLlaura Trevelyan and Diane Abbot it can.

And equally white protestants are hated by Catholics. Religion is a great cultural divider.

@phoenixrosehere you do know what the whip is in the context don't you?

Trolls, bots, people who are making bizarre jokes and thinking they're funny
I can't tell the difference between them anymore.

Sugarsweet987 · 23/04/2023 13:12

I don’t think that what Diane Abbott said is antisemectic at all. She pointed out a fact.
jews are not persecuted today as they were 50 years ago, are not 5x more likely to be stopped and searched, very unlikely to be followed in the shops, unlikely to receive poor maternal care, unlikely to be killed by the police because of their religion, unlikely to be predjuiced for jobs based on their name, culture, religion and color of their skin and the list goes on

DojaPhat · 23/04/2023 13:13

She really should have known better. She's been in politics long enough and endured so much to know what she wrote would end like this. I'm shocked she left herself so open. I'm glad though that people who hitherto didn't give a shit about anti-racism have now come out in full force condemning her letter, it's so nice to see everyone finally discovering the importance of anti-racism Smile Refreshing really, Diane Abbott receives the most amount of online abuse faced by a single MP to which Keir Starmer among others has never tackled nor parts of her own party even commented on. I'm glad that the Labour party and others have finally realised just how damaging racist rhetoric can be.

I wish the Conservatives were a joke but they are corrupt, self-serving and beyond parody.

GoodChat · 23/04/2023 13:13

@itsgettingweird I haven't suggested that she's representative of it.

sorry, I should get off here, it's too mad.

DomPom47 · 23/04/2023 13:13

This is not a Labour Party issue this is a society based issue, antisemitism is an issue in politics.
We hear more about the Labour Party based antisemitism due to the power of the right wing press. Politicians need to be held to a higher standard as they really ought to know better but nope all too often we find out they have issues based on race, sex, religions be that Judaism or Islam etc etc etc

MaryCrawford · 23/04/2023 13:13

Ireland is still under British Rule and the BBC usually-although not always- refer to Derry as Londonderry.

Colonialism is alive and well in the North of Ireland ( no such country as Northern Ireland)

ReformedWaywardTeen · 23/04/2023 13:14

I don't think she was wrong at all.

I'm Irish. We don't face anywhere near the type of racism experienced by black people or Asian people. No where near. We don't get overlooked for jobs, housing, or given grief by police. Not now.

Sorry but as a black woman she knows what she is talking about. There is far worse racism experienced by those people - look at the recent investigation into the MET.

Keir has looked for any excuse to sack her. If anything stops Labour winning it's his behaviour of forgetting what Labour stands for.

loislovesstewie · 23/04/2023 13:14

Actually Romani were murdered in the extermination camps alongside Jews. They were also considered to be a lowe form of life. The Nazis experimented on Gypsy children to test the effects of the poison gas used in the death chambers to ensure that it was a cheap and effective way of mass murder. At first they shot their victims or gassed them in the back of trucks, but they wanted to move on to death on an industrial scale which is when they started the above experiments. So, they too have been subjected to genocide recently.

Socialdistancechampion · 23/04/2023 13:14

It still seems socially acceptable to be antisemitic and to spout crap against travellers. These are the only 2 groups where you rarely get pulled up on it.

People defending Diane Abbott are proving this point
