Diane Abbott

To say that Diane Abbott is doing her best to help the Labour Party to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory?

Hideous antisemitism seemingly not gone away at all and add that to the horrendous misogyny in the Labour Party I wonder at this point why ANYONE would vote for them.

AIBU?

Extremely disappointing from such a distinguished member of parliament.

PipinwasAuntieMabelsdog · 23/04/2023 12:21

As a Jew, I am happy that she has been so blatant and showed that the Antisemitism is not gone from the partyand indeed the country DH and I are very worried for our children's future Sad

DojaPhat · 23/04/2023 12:21

Kier Starmer's office must be bursting at the seams with joy, Diane couldn't have given them a better opportunity to bin her.

Minierme · 23/04/2023 12:22

Hell121 · 23/04/2023 12:07

I can’t with a clear conscience vote for either of these shit shows of a party. Never felt more politically homeless and one of the main reasons we are leaving this country.

I think that’s unfair. She has basically been expelled from the Labour Party. She is no longer a labour MP. Kier starmer can’t continue to be held responsible for things that people say who he has explicitly and totally rejected their views.

AbsoluteYawns · 23/04/2023 12:22

Eleganz · 23/04/2023 12:15

I still think that, in respect of Jews and Romani people (for example), she is totally wrong and either ignorant of, or not accepting of, the lifetime discrimination these peoples face.

Therefore it is very easy for me to see why people are deeply offended by her comments and by why her apology that claims this was a case of "misdrafting" feels quite hollow.

Absolutely this. Jews, Romani, and Irish have always suffered and continue to.
She's a fucking disgrace.
How as a black woman she can write this shit is beyond comprehension.
It's not about who has suffered more. Any racism must be stamped out.
Dividing oppressed groups is such an idiotic move.

Florissant · 23/04/2023 12:22

It's not the first time Abbott made a racist comment and it won't be the last.

AutumnCrow · 23/04/2023 12:22

Oh god, that stupid fucking ‘red hair’ comparison … I am so sick of seeing that from brainless types, and to see it from someone with Diane Abbot’s education and experience is doubly, triply infuriating.

Iwantmyoldnameback · 23/04/2023 12:23

Keir Starmer has yet again shown how a party leader should act in these situations, something Boris and now Rishi seem incapable of.

EllenLRipley · 23/04/2023 12:23

If only there was a recent event where jews and travellers were oppressed due to their race eh? Is she so ignorant that she does not know about the prison boats that deported the Irish? Those saying it is a slip of the tongue from a woman focused on civil rights need to rethink their own prejudices and do some fact checking.

DonnaBanana · 23/04/2023 12:10

She said all Black people experience racism as a lifelong construct and white skinned people generally do not. She did not say that white skinned people never have experienced racism, just not universally and for “all their lives.” She may have been clumsy but do you really think Diane Abbott, a Black woman interested in civil rights, would be racist in the way people are painting her to be?

Yes but Owolade (a black man btw) wasn’t suggesting that white people universally experience racism was he?

Hotfootgoose · 23/04/2023 12:24

HavfrueDenizKisi · 23/04/2023 12:03

Quite frankly I cannot fathom how Diane Abbott is still a sitting MP.

This. Totally this.

FlemishHorse · 23/04/2023 12:24

I’m just an idealistic old hippy who wants the human race to outgrow all this stupid tribal shit.

(Not holding my breath though.)

SpeedSnap · 23/04/2023 12:25

I don't understand what happened.

She has had the whip withdrawn?

She said something about black, Jews, Irish and red heads suffering racism?

It is the kind of shit the right wing trot out. Unbelievable for Abbott to use it.

Read the letter she wrote.

BaronessEllarawrosaurus · 23/04/2023 12:25

To dismiss the racism Jewish, Irish and travellers face as being akin to the prejudice shown to red heads is appalling, as a red head I may have had comments made but I've never been refused jobs, services or been treated seriously as a 2nd class citizen. To dismiss the suffering some groups suffer due to belonging to a specific race is racist. To refuse to acknowledge that they are a race is racist.

I am sorry to hear this. It is shocking but I think that many people suspected that the anti-semites were still there - she has now shown this to be true.

I think Diane Abbott receives hideous abuse and levels of criticism driven by racism and misogyny. However this is awful, unacceptable and wrong and I don’t think her explanation of “early draft” really works. It’s the right thing that the Whip has been withdrawn and I don’t think it’s defensible in any way. What on earth was she thinking?!

As for the question in the OP How can anyone vote Labour? Have you seen the Conservative Party? This is unacceptable for one individual but the current Government is rotten to the core. I’m not one for all Tories are scum, but I wouldn’t trust someone who thought this hard right who have captured the conservatives are fit to govern.

donquixotedelamancha · 23/04/2023 12:27

Quite frankly I cannot fathom how Diane Abbott is still a sitting MP.

When she was young she achieved a lot, was a very effective campaigner and speaker and worked hard for her constituency.

Now she's struggling with basic functions of her job and nobody wanted to take the beloved family pet behind the barn, until today.

Hell121 · 23/04/2023 12:28

Wow he acted quickly - we really are in a race to the bottom. If and I think it is a big if I look forward to the threads on here when the inevitable happens.

Indeed, and to single out ethnic groups that have been subject to systematic racism for generations in Europe as examples of people who do not receive such prejudice goes beyond even refuting such a claim anyway.

Except that Jews, Romani and travellers have experienced racism as a life long construct and she also as many do seeks to minimise the amount of "white seeming people" that have been subject to slavery.

It is also not the first time that she has been called out for being racist.
