Drag vs cultural misappropriation

marahippo · 13/04/2023 21:44

I'd like to preface by saying I am all for LGBQT+ rights.

However I can't see why we tolerate men pretending to dress as women with over the top make up and clothing. These are not trans men, these are men who dress up with the sole purpose to mock and humiliate for entertainment. They talk about "fannies", grab their artificial boobs, dress like no woman would really dress and make a mockery/objectify women as sexual objects.

Even the names are designed to offending- I give you a few examples:
Cheryl Hole
A'Whora
Ginger Minj

Why is this acceptable?
The days of dressing up and pretending to be a different race/culture for entertainment is now unacceptable. Why is "sexual misappropriation" different?

Agree with you OP. Just adds to the continued norm of women not being taken seriously and openly mocked by society.

Whatevercanbedone · 13/04/2023 23:14

I think culture appropriation is something you only understand if it impacts you directly or someone you are close with.
I don't see drag as appropriation of women personally and it doesn't bother me. But I think if some women do feel like this then that is how they genuinely feel.

I don't understand the issue with black hairstyles (because it.isnt my culture) but I respect those who feel it appropriates their culture.

I'm Deaf BSL user and we have a big problem with non skilled BSL learners posting educational videos which are inaccurate. They get so much positive feedback from hearing culture and this is cultural appropriation. We have no issue with people learning BSL in fact we love this. We have no issue with those who gain high level of skill working as interpreters or in other roles. But people posting videos (not practice ones, but ones saying teaching) without the required skill is an issue.

Love it or hate it, it’s not for everyone I get that But it no way shape or form is it equivalent to black face!! Personally I love drag. They celebrate woman they support women. Their audience is full of women looking to have a good laugh. Yes they can be cure but I love their humour as do many other women. Doesn’t mean they should be cancelled!!

Why is it not the equivalent to blackface?

RichardHeed · 13/04/2023 23:23

They celebrate woman they support women.
How is calling yourself “fishy“ supporting or celebrating women?

Willyoujustbequiet · 13/04/2023 23:28

Its womenface and it mocks women.

If blackface isn't acceptable then neither is womanface. It really is that simple.

Yep!

EvenHeathens · 13/04/2023 23:31

Completely agree with you OP

Magentaa · 13/04/2023 23:32

@Willyoujustbequiet 🤦🏼‍♀️ It’s really not!! You all should be embarrassed to think the two are the same. Do you see black people laughing along to black face 🤔 i think not but you see hundreds of women laughing along WITH drag queens. You’re a bunch on snowflakes who need to get a grip!!

JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn · 13/04/2023 23:35

I can assure you I'm not a snowflake but I do dislike drag acts.

FuckNuggets · 13/04/2023 23:38

Magentaa · 13/04/2023 22:01

you should watch a few seasons of drag race maybe you will understand why they do drag 💁‍♀️ It’s more than just ‘oh I’ve got tits’ some of their stories are horrifying what they have been through. Anyways they’re eccentric and fabulous and their names are hilarious! Also what’s wrong with just having a laugh my god this world is far too serious now a days. Making things into thing when they’re not a thing

So what you're saying is if someone has been through something traumatic they can get away with anything? So because I was assaulted does that mean I can do blackface?

@Magentaa Nothing that they've been through justifies the misogynistic mocking of women. NOTHING! There can be absolutely nothing in this world that can justify that, any more than BlackFace is justifiable because a white man suffered in life. If you think drag is a laugh, why not bring back BlackFace. It's just a laugh, after all, innit?

No, both are deeply offensive.

DojaPhat · 13/04/2023 22:44

I'm not voting for any political party who do not explicitly say they'll make womanface a chargeable criminal offence.

What would the actual crime be, and what would count as womanface?

How do you know black people didn't laugh along at BlackFace? How do you know for certain they didn't? Just because some brainwashed handmaidens laugh along at drag, doesn't make it right. Your standards are so low if you judge the appropriateness of something on how many laughs it gets.

Somebodiesmother · 13/04/2023 23:45

The same as what blackface is and counts as.

Tomorrowisagesaway · 13/04/2023 23:48

I agree with you - it's generally intended to demene women, not to celebrate them, and, from my experienceof watching a couple of episodes of Drag Race is that they they don't tend to be that talented/entertaining.

I think the women who profess to enjoy drag have internalised misogyny and/or want to prove that they're fun and uninhibited ie not humourless feminists who won't let anyone have fun.

Magentaa · 13/04/2023 23:50

@FuckNuggets If you think that’s what I was saying…then you go ahead luvvy. If you think drag is the same as black face knock yourself out!! I get some people don’t like drag but comparing it to black face/appropriation is crackers

Yes, the women who defend it have been so brainwashed, so desensitised to it that they actually think it's a good thing. They have no idea how they've been programmed to accept it over the years. They can't see it.

Pearfacebananapoop · 13/04/2023 23:52

I'm in two minds about it. Totally get the blackface comment but can't get away from the fact I do find some (not all) v funny.
I think the recent death of Paul O'Grady and how he was held with such love by the nation was really interesting, I don't think anyone has ever broken through drag like he did.
On the flip side I know a lot of women who are incredibly open minded but just despise drag. Not because of misogyny or any political view but it just totally and utterly creeps them out.

but comparing it to black face/appropriation is crackers

No it isn't, and you know. It's the exact same thing. And you have no argument to disprove it. Both are the dominant culture or group - white men in blackface, white men in drag - mocking the oppressed group. It is exactly the same.

Mangogirl12 · 13/04/2023 23:54

Somebodiesmother · 13/04/2023 23:50

Blackface isn't a crime.

The shows are not allowed anymore though are they?

But I was specifically asking what crime it would be and what that crime would entail. You can't just decide things are crimes because you don't like them.
