Am I being unreasonable to expect people to know the difference?

So often I'm reading about how people brought this bargain, etc. It just really winds me up for some reason.

OP posts:
Divorcedalongtime · 10/04/2023 11:52

Used to annoy me also, I think I’ve given up with people on this now…

bellac11 · 10/04/2023 11:53

Wander and wonder being used the wrong way round as well.

kitsuneghost · 10/04/2023 11:54

It's loose and lose that annoys me.

Bonjovispjs · 10/04/2023 11:55

Their/there and your instead of you're drive me nuts 😆

thegrain · 10/04/2023 11:56

Have a look at pedants corner you'll love it

nicetoseetgesunsout · 10/04/2023 11:57

Yes all of these annoy me, as does one that seems to be increasingly used - 'seen' when it should be 'saw'

ImSweetEnoughDarlin · 10/04/2023 11:58

Yanbu op, its discusting.

PeachPiePrincess · 10/04/2023 11:58

Weary vs wary is another

Globules · 10/04/2023 11:59

I get wound up by people raising this old chestnut repeatedly.

Hijacking threads.

Starting their own threads.

AIBU?

justgettingthroughtheday · 10/04/2023 11:59

I suspect at least some of it is auto bloody correct!
Doesn't seem to make a difference what I type it always decides to change something!

Botw1 · 10/04/2023 12:00

Yes

And its drawer not draw.

Seems to be a regional/accent thing. I've never seen a Scottish person do it.

NoWayOfKnowing · 10/04/2023 12:00

You can either drive yourself mad with this stuff or let it go. I am much better these days at doing the latter. Other than when it comes to the classic ‘could of’ and other variations. I will never come to terms with that.

Moaning about it online makes you look like a pedantic uptight idiot, and I very much include myself in that.

Peoplepissmeoff · 10/04/2023 12:26

Brought and bought annoys me too.

Bought is from the word buy
Brought is from the word bring

Irrationally pisses me off!

Jibberty · 10/04/2023 12:30

Being as I in place of seeing as I - makes no sense.

missmollygreen · 10/04/2023 12:32

ImSweetEnoughDarlin · 10/04/2023 11:58

Yanbu op, its discusting.

Very good!

Mine is "dose" instead of "does" Usually in Facebook group posts

LlynTegid · 10/04/2023 12:32

Agree with you OP. Also with the decline of adverbs.

Crunchyb · 10/04/2023 12:33

When clearly well educated BBC presenters and even some upper middle class people featured on news programmes come out with, ‘I was sat’ rather than, ‘I was sitting’, you know it’s time to give up the fight. I know language evolves but evolution due to widespread poor education is really difficult to swallow.

sanityisamyth · 10/04/2023 12:33

Lend and borrow
Ect
Alot

There's lots about SPAG that annoys me!

Aprilx · 10/04/2023 12:34

I have only seen this recently, before mumsnet I had absolutely no idea that people mixed up brought and bought.

JustAJokeLikeOnTopGear · 10/04/2023 12:35

Hasn’t it come up before that it’s a regional difference? Although just plain wrong and confusing to me.

BusterGonad · 10/04/2023 12:46

I knew someone who always said brought. She was really annoying in every other way too.

BabaBooPuffinsRock · 10/04/2023 12:47

It's AIBU not pedant's corner. 🤷‍♀️

Tlolljs · 10/04/2023 12:49

That’s nothing I heard I brung it the other day.

Chewmeric · 10/04/2023 12:51

I have found my tribe.

I no wot u (don't get me started on Facebook) mean about the BBC people, @Crunchyb . The fing vat bothers me most about them is that vey use bofe f and th. F is bad enough but using both at ve same time is just inthuriating 😡. How do automatic subtitles know to write 'think' when the speaker says 'fink'?

Sometimes I want too correct people when they get they're words wrong but I'd be their all day.

rumpsteak · 10/04/2023 12:52

The overall level of poor language use annoys me. I don't know how people can come through at least eleven years of schooling and still not be able to construct gramatically correct sentences with correct langauge.
