It's BOUGHT not BROUGHT

Am I being unreasonable to expect people to know the difference?

So often I'm reading about how people brought this bargain, etc. It just really winds me up for some reason.

OP posts:

In some cases at least it’s to feel superior. One of the people who have posted on this thread, corrected someone’s SPaG on a post where they were describing a very upsetting thing that had happened to them. What a cunt.

That's a total and utter cuntish thing to do.

I'd rather have an extremely poor grasp of SPaG than be lower than a snake's belly.

What they don't realise (or probably do but their need for superiority is more important to them), is that every time these threads are posted, they'll be putting people off turning to Mumsnet when they have a real problem.

MN is supposed to help parents, not make them feel as though they're not good enough to post here.

Yep.
That's why I love to roll my sleeves up and lick my pencil to point out their mistakes. Because there is always, always one. At least.

There was quite an interesting article linked to on one of the recent "aren't other people thick and aren't I clever" threads about how people that do this, when put to the test, know fuck all about language compared to people who wouldn't dream of doing it.

They're almost to be pitied really, I suppose. If you are so lacking in self-esteem that pointing out someone's mistake on an internet forum makes you feel good about yourself, you're one sad fucker tbf.

I don't have much time for spelling and grammar pedants. There is a myriad of reasons why people might get some of the above examples wrong. I always let it go unless the poster is being horrible.

I saw an absolutely brilliant one on a FB selling page today though that really made me smile. Someone was selling a Mummas & Puppers pram! Grin.

See there's nothing wrong with having a private chuckle about something like that Grin

As long as it is totally private. Only a cunt would've picked them up on it.

I once went off into private fits of giggles when I saw 'Colder sack' instead of 'cul-de-sac' on my local FB 😂

Brought/bought is often complained about here, but I've never actually read or heard it misused. Presumably it's a typo or autocorrect if written by someone whose spelling/grammar is otherwise correct?

Lose/loose is a lost cause on MN and GN!

There was a thread the other day and the OP repeatedly used “brought” when she meant “bought”. She did it so many times, including on subsequent posts, that it really could not have been a typo or autocorrect.

BellePeppa · 10/04/2023 13:23

I have a friend who always says brought instead of bought. I’d never correct her but I do wonder how she got to fifty and not know the difference. Another annoying one, but I only ever see it online, is saying dribble instead of drivel.

Could of bean sum1 winding up the grammer polise Wink

WhyamIinahandcartandwherearewegoing · 10/04/2023 13:26

Should of, would of, could of. All rage inducing.

dapsnotplimsolls · 10/04/2023 13:32

One of the trending threads is about a MIL who brought an unwanted dessert to lunch yesterday. The OP managed to spell it correctly but ...

IAteAllTheTomatoes · 10/04/2023 13:33

I wouldn't pull anyone up on it but it annoys me too.

"We was" really gets to me. I see it here all the time and resist the urge to type "we were" underneath.

UnRavellingFast · 10/04/2023 13:34

I get wound up by people raising this old chestnut repeatedly.

Hijacking threads.

Starting their own threads.

AIBU?

😂 tee hee

ApplePippa · 10/04/2023 13:35

I hate threads like these.

There was a thread fairly recently, when the OP couldn't possibly understand why people muddle up bought and brought.

A few posts, and she did it herself. She typed the wrong one.

Of course in her case it was obviously a typo, and she should be excused for her mistake, but everyone else who did it was of course merely ignorant...

CellophaneFlower · 10/04/2023 13:36

Balling their eyes out. I've seen that more than a few times. Also know someone that thinks something is spelt "sank".

Chuckydidit · 10/04/2023 13:36

It’s Bore 🥱 not Boar.

smooththecat · 10/04/2023 13:37

I hate breath/ breathe. They don’t even sound similar so not sure why it happens, I can’t breath isn’t something anyone would ever say.
Text/texted is wrong to me but jury is out and I’m going to lose. I text him, he text her etc. It’s texted.
There is a bit of a race to the bottom going on, specifically in the UK. You’ll notice that Australians and Americans don’t do I was sat, I was stood etc.

ThreeblackCats · 10/04/2023 13:38

Ect rather than etc really grinds my gears. It’s three letters! People are ignorant and low key illiterate. I’ve learned to accept their lack of grammar.

Belledan1 · 10/04/2023 13:38

Brought think bring as bringing something. Then bought is if you buy setting. Stationery think envelope so use the e one . I used to be terrible with been and being not sure why as it's not that confusing.

worraliberty · 10/04/2023 13:39

The thing is, those who get so 'outraged' by it that they apparently can't seem to stop their fingers typing to tell the person off, should stop using internet forums.

Imagine being so angry about it that you feel you have to tell that person they're doing it wrong?

Just stop logging on if it's turning you into that person and leave everyone else to their own business.

Roozkitty · 10/04/2023 13:39

Queue and cue really annoy me, even worse when it's "que. That's not even a word!

Belledan1 · 10/04/2023 13:39

Sorry buy something not settings!

WestendVBroadway · 10/04/2023 13:41

Can somebody please give me some advise on this problem? If anyone can advice me it would be appreciated.
I see people get these 2 muddled up all the time on a professional Facebook group.

Is your comma button broken?

It's the fact I don't say anything that makes it boil up inside 😂

I do correct my OH though. He actually doesn't mind as he now spells much better and prefers it that way!

Well that's very big of you. I'm sure they appreciate it 🙄
