Am I being unreasonable to expect people to know the difference?

So often I'm reading about how people brought this bargain, etc. It just really winds me up for some reason.

Oh and saying "haich" instead of "aitch" for H (unless you're Irish) makes people sound thick as fucking mince!

I don't see the point of this thread unless you think this is earth shattering news to those who continually get it wrong?

This won't be the first time they've been told this.

Then maybe they could try harder?!

MrsClatterbuck · 12/04/2023 23:48

Also people saying that they borrowed money to someone. You LENT money and the person that you lent it to it was them that BORROWED the money from you.

Boarder instead of border. I developed an eye twitch in the early pandemic days with the numerous posts demanding they "close the boarders".

Why?

If they're happy and most people can understand them, then the problem is yours, not theirs.

It's the use of the word "yous" that grates on me.
"Thank yous for coming."
"I hope yous have a lovely time on holiday."

What is wrong with just "you"? No need for an added "s". Is yous even a real word?

Botw1 · 13/04/2023 06:37

@Dogwalker56

It is in Scotland

Although I don't think anyone would say thank yous for coming

That doesn't really even make sense

How does ‘I hope yous have a lovely time on holiday’ make sense but ‘thank yous for coming’ doesn’t? Genuine question. Is it a future/past thing?

Because that's not how words work. An individual word has a clear meaning. Using a similar but completely different word is not an optional substitution that doesn't matter. It changes the whole meaning. It causes confusion. It's indecipherable to a foreign speaker. It is a really poor way to communicate, to hope the listener can mentally replace the word with the correct one.

I only ever hear it used when someone is speaking to a few people at the same time e.g. at a wedding reception, "Thank yous for coming," would be to all of the guests. I don't understand why it's use in one sentence would make sense but not in another when used for the same reason. I always believed that the word "you" was both singular and plural so no need for the "s" . People wouldn't say, "sheeps" would they? Or at least I hope not! 😂

No, I misread

They both make sense.

I was just reading a thread where someone “brought a house in South London”.

My first thought was how on earth could someone so thick afford a house in London?!
