Am I being unreasonable to expect people to know the difference?

So often I'm reading about how people brought this bargain, etc. It just really winds me up for some reason.

OP posts:
Botw1 · 10/04/2023 21:11

Not that I'm aware of

I've no idea what rhoticity is though lol so could be wrong

It's pronouncing a written R when in a non rhotic accent it wouldn't be.
"Farm", for example, in my non- rhotic accent would be /fa:m/ but in a rhotic one it would be /fa:rm/
If Intrusive R doesn't exist in rhotic accents, it'll be something connected to that rhoticity I presume, but again, I'm not sure.

@NowZeusHasLainWithLeda

And brought in brought. Drawer in drawer

The r is there for a reason

I def wouldn't say lore and awda

I'd say lau and oRderrrr

The R in "brought" is pronounced by rhotic and non-rhotic because it precedes a vowel. It's the ones after a vowel that aren't pronounced in non-rhotic accents. Non-rhotics wouldn't pronounce either of the Rs in "order".
It's not quite as simple as saying the R is there for a reason in English, unfortunately. Would that it were. My job would be a lot easier!

@NowZeusHasLainWithLeda

Accents are definitely geographical

If they say "I brought the children with me" I'd respond with "how much did they cost you?"

If they say "I'll borrow you my book" I will say "how can you borrow a book that is already yours?"

Over time they get it.

Well yes, over time they will realise you think brought means bought.

I say drawer exactly the same way as draw because that is my accent.

Pedants’ not Pedant’s! There’s definitely more than one pedant!

Just like Mothers' Day. There are many mothers.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 12/04/2023 07:12

You're fighting a losing battle, OP. There have been enough loose/lose threads - either they don’t see them or they just don’t register.

My pet peeve (apart from its/it’s, there/they’re/their, who’s/whose, etc. (and ect. of course) is discreet/discrete. They are not alternative spellings - they mean entirely different things!

But I know that saying it here won’t make a scrap of difference. 🙁

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 12/04/2023 07:14

@halfsiesonapotnoodle , you’d have loved a Mothers’ Day card I once saw on sale - ‘If Mum’s were flowers, I’d pick you!’

wildswimm · 12/04/2023 07:14

To buy is to bought
To bring is to brought

fairgame84 · 12/04/2023 07:18

YANBU it makes my teeth itch.

Surly and surely is another one.

@ZiriForEver

It's because could've sounds like could of

People should still know it’s could have though when it comes to spelling it.

maddiemookins16mum · 12/04/2023 07:46

Junior Bake Off - ‘it’s so fun’. Wtf! The Judge uttered this phrase constantly.

Itsallaloadofbollocks · 12/04/2023 07:46

It's SLIVER not SLITHER 😡
SLITHER is what snakes do! If you have a splinter you have a SLIVER of wood in your finger.

I am entertained by "walla" that seems to be more common lately!

What does that even mean?!

Fairislefandango · 12/04/2023 10:08

It's what some people think the word 'voilà' looks (and sounds) like!

sanityisamyth · 12/04/2023 10:09

Ohhhh that's depressing 🙈

icanneverthinkofnc · 12/04/2023 10:22

Weirdly, last night, I had a message from a friend, she wrote that a woman had 'brought' a craft item from her...my reply was 'that's great that 'nicky' has bought one, it may start the ball rolling and others may buy now.'
I would never correct her as such, but rephrasing the comment may make her think. You never know.

Your and you're gives me the total rage op. One is 2 words. The other isn't. What is so complicated ffs?!

HouseByTheSeaside · 12/04/2023 23:40

nicetoseetgesunsout · 10/04/2023 11:57

Yes all of these annoy me, as does one that seems to be increasingly used - 'seen' when it should be 'saw'

Sounds so thick.

I get wound up by people raising this old chestnut repeatedly.

Hijacking threads.

Starting their own threads.
