Am I being unreasonable to expect people to know the difference?

So often I'm reading about how people brought this bargain, etc. It just really winds me up for some reason.

OP posts:
DotAndCarryOne2 · 10/04/2023 14:06

The Americanisation annoys me too - bring instead of take, and brought instead of took.

FB what?

🤣 Ha - perils of typing on the move. Totally my bad 😉. I still stand by the use of proper grammar and spelling. However, I would never actually pick someone up on either a typo or shocking use of the English language on a public forum or real life (except a thread like this which is totally fair game!)

ttcat37 · 10/04/2023 14:15

Defiantly instead of definitely 😫

Tessisme · 10/04/2023 14:17

I get irritated by these mistakes. I would never ever point them out to anyone (except my children) but I think starting a thread to have a bit of a general moan is fair enough😃

I'm dyslexic. Reminds me really that 99% of people view me as a thicko

See but even this is not nice.

People who have poor SPaG and are not dyslexic are not 'thickos' either.

There are many reasons why people are poorly educated rather than 'thick'.

Young carers for example often miss massive amounts of schooling, while caring for a parent.

PriamFarrl · 10/04/2023 13:59

The issue is that words have meanings. You can’t just use the wrong word, it means a different thing.

In situations where that meaning needs to be clear, unequivocally so, then yes, I'd agree.
Where it is someone emptying their heart about a cheating husband on a forum for relationship support, and they use there instead of their, not so much.

That's really rude. Being dyslexic isn't the only reason people might struggle.

Lifeinlists · 10/04/2023 13:57

I havent noticed any 'outrage' although you do seem a bit exercised by the thread. It's a discussion about the often irritating and common misuse of the English language. It's a valid subject.

Also it's AIBU which isn't noted for its delicacy where opinions are concerned.

You must've either skimmed the thread or just totally ignored previous posters if you don't see any outrage.

People have repeatedly said poor SPaG makes them angry.

Yeah glad you said that

@BlueJellycat I like to think that people on this thread are not generally representative of the wider population. Most people I know in real life are not as incensed by SPAG mistakes, or if they are, they are kind enough to keep their outrage to themselves.

I actually think that some on posters on this thread are doing little more than displaying their ignorance for all to see. They must live in such a small bubble to not have any inking of the myriad of reasons why other people's SPAG may be less than perfect. A very small experience of the world indeed.

My child is dyslexic. I see how much more effort he has to put in than others do. He has to work so much harder than many of the posters on this thread will ever have to, for all their faux superiority.

thegrain · 10/04/2023 14:26

And what if someone is of low intelligence? It doesn't make them any lesser a person. We don't measure a person's worth on their intelligence.

NaturalBae · 10/04/2023 14:29

I point out these mistakes to my children, some family members, sometimes other people’s children and to colleagues who ask me to proofread their emails before they press send.

Exactly!

Grown adults looking down on those less intelligent is just bloody nasty.

I dread to think how they'd treat their own kids if they weren't particularly intelligent.

I think for some it is an exhibition of superiority and putting/keeping others 'in their place.' I see this at work all the time.

English isn't my first language. I don't mind 90% of those mentioned in this thread, as it is close enough to read.

"Could of" is the killer. It has zero common letters! And it doesn't sound the same to me either. I guessed the meaning in the end, but it feels kind of unfair.

Botw1 · 10/04/2023 15:23

@ZiriForEver

It's because could've sounds like could of

Hotcrossed · 10/04/2023 15:43

at work we share the generic email and one particular colleague has dreadful grammar, it makes me wince

Of and have don’t sound the same but could’ve sounds very like could of.

NaturalBae · 10/04/2023 16:09

I’m not sure if any one else has posted anything similar, but I just had to. It’s good to share and help others 🙂:

Could’ve (could have)
Wouldn’t (would not)
Can’t (cannot)
I’ve (I have)
I’m (I am)

NaturalBae · 10/04/2023 16:14

I’ll (I will)
Doesn’t (does not)
etc…

Maybe other pp can help educate the masses, as the UK State school system has clearly been struggling for a while.

ColdHandsHotHead · 10/04/2023 16:18

I used to work a head of communications who consistently wrote 'could of'. She also banned us from using contractions such as didn't, wouldn't, I'm. After a while I worked out that it was because she didn't know where to use apostrophes.

Yes, I got that it replaces the 've. I acknowledge it is similar. I just don't have it classified in my head as the same sound (is it the same one?) and given how many sounds in English are similar to each other, it seems a bit random.

DeedlessIndeed · 10/04/2023 16:22

Yes OP, I'm with you.

However I do have to remind myself am I BRinging something or Buying something every single time as it just does not stick for some reason.
