To be offended by Nike?

My go-to sports brand is launching a new sports bra using a transwoman influencer.

What are they trying to communicate to me, their target audience? That their new sports bras are too wide in the back and have no extra space and good support for my breasts?

I would have thought a fair bit of biological reality goes into designing sports clothing for men and women, to ensure maximum comfort and optimum performance.

I feel… mocked. Is this what Nike thinks women are?

The funny thing is, Nike do have history of politics and appearing right-on, but on this occasion they’ve missed the train by 2 years… I invite you to consider carefully where you spend your woman-money.

Nike have very questionable ethics. They supported Alberto Salazar and his doping/ abusive athletics coaching set up for years. It's worth reading what happened to Mary Cain and Kara Goucher (although most British people who know about it have buried their heads in the sand about it as it raises questions about Mo Farah and his miraculous improvement when coached by Salazar and no one wants to believe he's a cheat).

I wont be boycotting Nike.
I don’t think clothing should be segregated by sex anyway..so I do not care whether a male or female is wearing any article of sports clothing no matter what they call themselves. I get it can seem offensive to see a male in a sports bra, but so what? Just because we were raised thinking their nipples are ok to expose but ours aren’t- who says everyone has to dress that way? If a male wants to cover up their nipples/top and use a sports bra to do it that is ok by me. Similarly if a female wanted to work out topless…I’d be ok with that too.

Sports bra aren't about protecting your nipples you idiot, they are about supporting your breasts 🙄

Emigratingimmigrant · 06/04/2023 11:25

I just imagined myself with my DD working out topless😂
Ouch

Well, wherever they are - must be dry and painful.

Bleeding gums? very good for emergency dressing of mouth injuries apparently.

I find Dylan intensely cringy and annoying but Nike haven’t lost anything with me - I’m not interested in paying to advertise their brand for them.

Up his arse? Maybe cheaper than buttplugs and saves having to wash them 🤷🏻‍♀️

Oh yes and nose bleeds! Tho I've never tried it.

Dylan has brand ambassador deals with Tampax, Bud Light and now Nike. Saw an article saying he’s earning up to $50k per instagram post for these brands. I often wonder why there are no trans men fronting huge brands for products that are traditionally designed for/targeted at men. Anyway I won’t be buying Nike (or Tampax) products anymore.

Myogapants · 06/04/2023 11:37

I'm dismayed. I buy tampax because I bleed. Not because I want tampons up my arse.

I am SO confused.

I don't think anyone cares if a man wants to wear sports clothing designed for women but I do care when a man, parading as a woman, parodies a woman doing exercise in a such an exaggerated feminine way, it's offensive.

People are going to need therapy after seeing that damn video 🫣😭🤢

Merida46 · 06/04/2023 11:42

Mulvaney is a narcissistic gay man and using him to TRY to sell women's sports wear is ridiculous.

Apart from the bad reputation Nike has to exploiting workers in low wage countries, they also have the worst record ever for the way they treat female athletes. Being pregnant or a mum is good enough reason for Nike to cut sponsorships to 70% whilst keeping the expectations of the same personal bests are prior to being pregnant.

Nothing about them says woman friendly. The fact they think a man with zero boobs and an extremely low level of body fat (which women cannot achieve without starvation) can model a womans sports bra just says it all.

MelsMoneyTree · 06/04/2023 11:43

Asics running shoes are excellent.

Inaea · 06/04/2023 10:52

Right? I want to say the worst bit is how offensive the ad is to both women and gay men, but actually the worst bit has to be the creepy smile and the eyes. If I saw him in an alley (or toilet) I’d run a mile.

Exactly, I'm not offended by people who are genuinely gay, transgender, straight, whatever. But, this feels wrong, and it's always women at the brunt.

Fairislefandango · 06/04/2023 11:48

Dylan looks like a tit even if he doesn't have any to put in his sports bra. I went to buy some sports gear for ds yesterday. Really glad I didn't buy anything Nike. Regardless of whether you think clothes shouldn't be gendered, a) having boobs is to do with sex, not gender and b) there is no excuse for an advert that makes out that women do sport by prancing about like that idiot.

”clothing shouldn’t be segregated by sex”? We’re talking about bras, not kids’ t-shirts. It’s not some kind of evidence of apartheid that women might need bras designed to support actual breasts. 🙄

Hillcrest2022 · 06/04/2023 11:51

Allright then. Won't be buying Nike.

Hoppinggreen · 06/04/2023 11:51

I don’t actually have an issue with a TW modelling a sports bra, although it does make me wonder why it was seen to be the best option.
However, Dylan doesn’t even have bloody boobs so how the F do they need a sports bra. It’s ridiculous

Jonei · 06/04/2023 11:55

That is offensive. He's just mocking women and he's being given a platform to do it, over and over again. Nike can just fuck off.

MakiSushi · 06/04/2023 11:56

I just went on to their chat to highlight that many women are concerned with the impact trans women are having on womens sports (and referenced recent cases with swimming, weight lifting etc). I also mentioned that I found Dylan's mockery of what it is to be a woman highly offensive. I highlighted that Nike were clearly supporting this mockery of what it is to be a woman.

The chat person said she was sorry I was offended by the campaign and that she would "pass my comments on".
