To be offended by Nike?

My go-to sports brand is launching a new sports bra using a transwoman influencer.

What are they trying to communicate to me, their target audience? That their new sports bras are too wide in the back and have no extra space and good support for my breasts?

I would have thought a fair bit of biological reality goes into designing sports clothing for men and women, to ensure maximum comfort and optimum performance.

I feel… mocked. Is this what Nike thinks women are?

The funny thing is, Nike do have history of politics and appearing right-on, but on this occasion they’ve missed the train by 2 years… I invite you to consider carefully where you spend your woman-money.

I just showed the clip to my teen dc and some of their mates, and they were unanimous in thinking DM is a bellend.

Showed the "work out" video of Dylan to my friend who actually does work out and looks nothing like he does.

She couldn't stop laughing.

I usually buy loads of Nike stuff for myself and the kids. Won’t be buying any more after this debacle.

Way to miss my point which is that just because someone a different size wants do wear something, doesn’t mean anyone else is going to lose out.

If you want to wear something you can wear it.

As well as missing your point the PP seems to think all women are catered for. I have a very small back but a very big cup size, I’ve got 2 sports bras that I’ve had for far too long, all ones in my size are very rare to find and too expensive for me to buy enough as I wear them everyday. Why are Nike fulfilling his fetish before looking at actual women that need this product?

I suppose me and all the female yogis in India that practiced yoga for millennia before the bra was even invented are all “idiots” then. Or perhaps you are so brainwashed by gender norms from your culture you cannot conceive of anything else.

No, the people that practiced yoga before bras were invented aren’t idiots.

I am not brainwashed by gender norms but I am very aware that every body is different and needs different things, for example my 28J chest needs a sports bra on for yoga rather than a crop top because otherwise I will be in physical pain and they will be physically in the way, even though it is low intensity. People that can’t understand this are idiots though as far as I am concerned.

My need for a bra is much more significant than Dylans.

*But, with greatest of respect to you and your views
my daughters wouldn’t agree with you. When I asked middle DD she said ‘ oh I love Dylan M’

Also it’s a bit of a reach for you to take from my comment that I raise my teens not to be aware of issues like this.

I genuinely don’t know anyone IRL that holds the views that people do here. I try and avoid these threads for this reason. There are so many more worrying things going on in the world than a tik tok influencer wearing a sports bra.*

Grand.

Conversely, I don't know anyone in real life who holds the views you do.

I've got teenage daughters too. My daughters wouldn't agree with your daughters.

They are pissed off. Especially the one who is very sporty. She's 16 and very small. Her running leggings are age 12 and it is hard for us to find sports bras that she can compete in. She can't wear the sports bra of a twelve year old because she doesn't have the breasts of a twelve year old. She's a 100m runner and a hurdler. She needs a sports bra that she can do sports in.

Why can't that be featured in an advert? That's what they are for, for women to do sport in. Not for a man to prance around in.

Is he taking the piss out of Nike or women, I can't really tell? The narrative seemed to be "this is how Nike think women exercise".
I can't get upset about a brand mixing gendered clothing in general btw, my dd never buys women's hoodie for example. In this case though I'm not sure what this guy is trying to achieve or say; whatever is is isn't working.

But male bodies don't need any kind of bras. They don't have boobs

You must lead a very sheltered life then if you dont understand other people's views on this . The primary focus here is about women's rights and it sounds like your daughters like my SD haven't really thought about this. They are fed a diet of equality and be kind and all that other shit but have not been fed the reality of the situation - it is the erosion of THEIR rights. You have minimised this in your post so I imagine you do so too with your daughters.

Fairislefandango · 07/04/2023 22:05

It's perfectly possible to have the mental capacity to find many different things worrying simultaneously.

I was thinking about this and interestingly the only people around me, in my personal circle, who openly discuss these things irl are non brits.
Quite a few of us grew up with older gen trans and we never had an issue because they knew that 6ft tall stong guy even in a dress will be uncomfortable presence for girls and women in small toilet.
They also all went through all required surgeries as soon as allowed and became happy themselves and then they aterted using our spaces properly etc. Usually.
Quite a few times we were discussing the "new trans" vs the "old trans" because trans was hitting the news, and how the issue now is the latching of perverts and woman haters on a legitimate thing. Feel sorry for the older proper gen.

It's also, as some other bits, bit of a western issue. It's interesting to quite a few of us that while this is happening and women are just getting battered physically and metaphorically, people still manage to "bitch" about treatment off women in other countries. Funnily that other countries do similar though. So it's a fair game. It's also interesting to watch where (as in countries) and how is it happening.

DiscoBeat · 08/04/2023 06:37

I don't buy bras from there anyway, and it doesn't particularly bother me but why are they wearing the bra though, if they don't have breasts?

Doingmybest12 · 08/04/2023 07:27

I actually think what a cynical move from Nike to use this person in this campaign. I presume they knew it would attract such attention and they have reached a whole load of people they wouldn't usually reach. They've thrown woman and the performer under a bus. I think it is a vicious campaign actually, shows what they think of woman athletes and hopefully it'll backfire.

Doingmybest12 · 08/04/2023 07:28

I presume they are now a fashion brand over a sports brand.

HermoineFairfax · 08/04/2023 07:30

Jeez...I'd have preferred they used Emily Howard from Little Britain in their advert. At least then we'd know it was a pee-take.

What woman prances like that??

What are they trying to say? Here's our sports bra, ladies...and a man to advertise it in the style of how you ladies exercise.

I think that's likely to be true.
