To be offended by Nike?

My go-to sports brand is launching a new sports bra using a transwoman influencer.

What are they trying to communicate to me, their target audience? That their new sports bras are too wide in the back and have no extra space and good support for my breasts?

I would have thought a fair bit of biological reality goes into designing sports clothing for men and women, to ensure maximum comfort and optimum performance.

I feel… mocked. Is this what Nike thinks women are?

The funny thing is, Nike do have history of politics and appearing right-on, but on this occasion they’ve missed the train by 2 years… I invite you to consider carefully where you spend your woman-money.

Also, I don’t think I was totally clear in my post although nobody has mentioned it yet so maybe I was. I know the man Nike is using hasn’t got implants but I meant that it’s ridiculous that we are in a situation where big companies feel that it’s totally normal to view a man with / without implants as equivalent to a woman model, when there are so many more biological aspects (broadness of back, depth of shoulders etc).

I have watched - what's your point sorry I am not following?

It's by far not the same though. This one was well done ad. I didn't see any ovedone stereotypical "funny" male behaviour. Just matter of fact "I am into sports, it helped me" video. That's what people mind on this one (alongside the fact Dylan has issues....). I wouldn't mind someone like Laverne Cox in there tbh.

Sharron Davies is just about to appear on Dan Wootton's show on GB News to discuss this.

sst1234 · 06/04/2023 22:03

Boycott Nike. And Balenciaga. But how many women will actually do that? Not many. Yet they will complain about their rights and safety being trampled on.

That woman and JK have done more for women’s rights than the woke brigade could ever even dream of.

highfidelity · 06/04/2023 22:28

Watching GB News now, the other thing that has occurred to me about Dylan is that he hasn't changed his name or given his transwoman identity a different name. This is quite unusual, and makes me even more certain he's doing this only for attention.

Tbf boycotting balenciaga is actually one of the easiest things I could do in my life. Half the staff looks like they robbed long abandoned crack den even if one tries to forget about their safeguarding of kids and general ethics.

The dude is a chancer, basically taking the piss out of the wokesters and women at the same time. And making a mint while doing it. And the amoeba brained wokesters are fawning all over him. It would be embarrassing if it wasn’t so misogynistic.

Sigh.

Yes, I know already know this 🙄

Sparklybanana · 06/04/2023 23:07

Come on. For all of history, women have had to put up with designs made for men - cars, chairs, health care, phones etc. Now that men are women it makes sense that bras are designed for men too! 🙄

bluedomino · 06/04/2023 23:15

It's difficult enough finding sports clothes that aren't pink, purple or pale blue/green. Now we have to try to fit our womens figures in men's clothing. Just look at that bloke. He is the polar opposite to the shape a woman is. Its so insulting.

Really? Most womens workout clothes are black!

hotdiggetydog · 07/04/2023 05:39

Where on earth are you looking?? My leggings are all black and grey, my t-shirts are all black or white or green, as are my spots bras. The only pink sports gear I have is my trainers but thats because I liked them, not because it was the only colour available.

lottie2888 · 06/04/2023 17:04

In fairness, I don’t think anyone here is Nikes target audience. I can’t see them losing sales over this.
My teens certainly wouldn’t care- or even notice.

So you are in effect saying you raise your teens not to be aware of issues like this? For young girls it is essential that they know that their rights as a woman are being eroded.

NewLifter · 07/04/2023 08:00

gogohmm · 06/04/2023 17:50

I wouldn't touch a sports bra made by nike anyway, they don't offer the support larger women (i could say real but I don't want to offend biological women not "blessed" or rather cursed with my figure!) mine are shock absorber brand and M&S ultra

And yet you said it anyway! As an athletic woman, I am quite happy with my tiny boobs thanks Wink

I actually was in a Nike shop the other day (for the first time!) and I was quite impressed that they had mannequins that were different shapes and sizes. Some definite ‘plus size’ mannequin shapes wearing both yoga and running gear in the men’s and women’s ranges. And I thought that’s great as you don’t feel excluded and that their stuff is only for people who are elite! So this is a weird approach, to piss off a lot of women with buying power.

Nike has never been about people who are elites for many a year - it is more of a fashion brand worn by certain demographics. As regards the plus size dummies they are all over the place in the USA.

ChardonnaysBeastlyCat · 07/04/2023 09:30

Watching that barefoot prancing was painful, Nike could have chosen to sponsor Dylan's shoes, which there clearly was a need for, but no, it had to be a bra!

Lastnamedidntstick · 07/04/2023 09:36

women athletes have been ditching Nike sponsorships for years.

they have a shit reputation for not supporting their sponsored athletes. Setting targets for returning to elite sport after c-sections or losing the contract, that sort of shit.

this is nothing new.

itsabigtree · 07/04/2023 09:47

If it was just a normal trans women, I wouldn't be so bothered.

The fact that it is Dylan, is a joke. They are taking the piss out of both women, and trans people. They are not even legitimately transsexual.

Besides that, the market for Nike is not the work left lot who buy into Dylan. The market is majority teens into urban wear who would rather someone like Maja Jama, Or a grime artist was the face of the brand.

NemoandDoris · 07/04/2023 10:03

Nike (i think it was) dropped sponsorship of a female athlete by 70% when she got pregnant. They have a history of treating women like shit.

But I would love to be a fly on the wall in Dylan Mulvaney's home when the camera's stop rolling. Is he still a girl or reverts back to being a man and farts on the sofa watching football etc and he is just doing all this as a money making exercise.

tbh honest Mulvaney is a bit of an insult to genuine transpeople, as well as women, who do want to be taken seriously.

That's a very transphobic thing to say. If Dylan says he's trans, he is trans. There's no set rules. No guidelines. No requirements. No minimum amount of 'feminism'

You cna be a woman and have a dick, beard and a hard on about it all, don't you know?
