To be offended by Nike?

My go-to sports brand is launching a new sports bra using a transwoman influencer.

What are they trying to communicate to me, their target audience? That their new sports bras are too wide in the back and have no extra space and good support for my breasts?

I would have thought a fair bit of biological reality goes into designing sports clothing for men and women, to ensure maximum comfort and optimum performance.

I feel… mocked. Is this what Nike thinks women are?

The funny thing is, Nike do have history of politics and appearing right-on, but on this occasion they’ve missed the train by 2 years… I invite you to consider carefully where you spend your woman-money.

He is sponsored by a few brands. Tags power woman or whatever in posts.

How many sponsorships are there for condoms and trans men?

Males advertising female products are more common. It’s just encroaching on female space as is more typical.

I suppose me and all the female yogis in India that practiced yoga for millennia before the bra was even invented are all “idiots” then.

Confused I find it much more comfortable do yoga wearing a soft, light-control sports bra. I'm not sure even the most experienced female yogi gets to tell me what I find comfortable tbh.

L3ThirtySeven · 06/04/2023 18:02

See, I don’t view clothing as needing to be inherently sexed. Why should any clothing be off limits for either sex? To argue only one sex can dress one way is to enforce (mostly european) patriarchal gender norms. Thought we were all for breaking those down not perpetuating them.

Stop being ridiculous - that's clearly not yoga. And FYI, I have 28F breasts - I most certainly need breast support for yoga.

HTH.

Good on you. And good thing too that no one has told you what you find most comfortable.

Some women need bras , some clothes are made for the different sexes , because are bodies are different.
This has nothing to do with gender !

As JKR said...

Dress however you please unless you're a transwoman and then we'll attack you and call you a sick blue-haired pervert

Call yourself whatever you please unless you want to call yourself non-binary or a transwoman or you make a joke about being called a "fisherthem" and we'll make a multiple page thread ripping the piss

Most clothing doesn't need to be sexed, but bras??

And I don't really care if DM chooses to wear a bra, in the comfort of his own home. What I object to, is Nike trying to sell women bras by using a man to advertise them. What next, advertising school uniform with middle aged models?

He could advertise for Nike men and man power whilst wearing a dress, make up or sports bra?

No-one is arguing any of this. What we are discussing is that a man has no need to wear a sports bra when taking the piss out of women exercising

Yes but not all women need bras but are still expected to wear them, because cover up those nipples. I don’t think it’s being ridiculous to point out that there is certainly a societal push of cover up woman when it comes to bras. Wearing them isn’t based on need…it’s based on your sex. Which I am against.

If you want to wear them or need them, fine. But to say x can’t wear one because they don’t “need” makes no sense because tons of small breasted women don’t need them either.

Fairislefandango · 06/04/2023 18:09

Well, you said:

You don’t need breast support for yoga, who’s the idiot now?

Sounded pretty much like you were making a pronouncement about what women do/don't need to wear for yoga. I need to wear a bra, otherwise it's uncomfortable.

I’m saying need is irrelevant. I don’t care that he is wearing one. He can have one in every colour of the rainbow if he wants to.

Well technically you don’t need a the breast support of a sports bra for yoga. Breast support is having breasts supported from the results of high impact exercise with a sports bra. It’s not saying you can do it half naked. Most yoga sports bras provide no more support than a crop top would.

Dylan can wear as many unnecessary bras as he likes. The question is why, when the purpose of sports bras is to support women's breasts during sport, Nike should choose to market them using a man with no breasts doing a parody of a woman doing exercise.

Unsure33 · 06/04/2023 18:13

dylan is also doing Kate spade handbags and tampax and raking in the money. It’s insulting to women .

and not a good healthy example for young girls .

I guess they will be going for more surgery soon .in between the victim tears .

MarshaBradyo · 06/04/2023 18:14

It’s rife across our sex class, males encroaching on our spaces, our words, and our awards, sports etc

Do men get the same? A female advertising a male product whilst taking a male award and reducing men to say penis havers?

It’s all from the same place. It’s no wonder women are saying no.

It’s obviously aimed at a different demographic than their usual one. So the why is because they want to expand their customer base. Nothing wrong with that.

Emigratingimmigrant · 06/04/2023 18:15

Bra for men are fine. We all probly know men who would probably welcome them...

What's not fine is men advertising bra or women's products for women. For trans? For men? Great! Why the heck not. But doing overexaggerated caricature of women while selling women's clothes. Nah. That's dumb.

I mean like, it would be equally ridiculous if I was modelling special boxers for well endowed males while scratching my nether regions, burping and holding beer? Nah. It would look equally ridiculous.

nothingcomestonothing · 06/04/2023 18:15

You might not, I'm a 32H, I need breast support to do any fucking thing.

YouSetTheTone · 06/04/2023 18:15

YANBU. The clip of Dylan Mulvaney prancing and spinning with a goofy grin is bizarre and totally offensive. Why is an emaciated man with makeup on seen as an appropriate advertisement for women’s sports wear?
I’d actually just bought some bloody Nike trainers for my children so I emailed Nike to let them know that was the last time I’m spending money on their products.

Hi,

I wish I had known about the fact that Nike have used Dylan Mulvaney to promote women's sports wear before I bought these trainers. I will never buy another pair of Nike trainers for my sons again - they are 5, 8 and 12 so you would have got a lot of trainers out of me over the years.

As a woman I find it highly offensive that you are using a man who 'lives as a woman' (by exhibiting highly stereotypical behaviour and referring to female anatomy as a 'Barbie pouch') to advertise products aimed at women.

Please respect women. A woman is an adult human female, she is not a costume or a feeling.

Best wishes,

Emigratingimmigrant · 06/04/2023 18:16

And now I want that model deal because it sounds fun😔
