To be offended by Nike?

My go-to sports brand is launching a new sports bra using a transwoman influencer.

What are they trying to communicate to me, their target audience? That their new sports bras are too wide in the back and have no extra space and good support for my breasts?

I would have thought a fair bit of biological reality goes into designing sports clothing for men and women, to ensure maximum comfort and optimum performance.

I feel… mocked. Is this what Nike thinks women are?

The funny thing is, Nike do have history of politics and appearing right-on, but on this occasion they’ve missed the train by 2 years… I invite you to consider carefully where you spend your woman-money.

I’m saying need is irrelevant. I don’t care that he is wearing one. He can have one in every colour of the rainbow if he wants to.

Well, you might not care, but many of us do. Stop being obtuse and deliberately choosing to disregard why so many of us are angry about this.

MaydinEssex · 06/04/2023 18:19

Boycott the Nike brand, its insulting to women.

In fairness, I don’t think anyone here is Nikes target audience. I can’t see them losing sales over this.
My teens certainly wouldn’t care- or even notice.

I'm middle aged and wear Nike trainers pretty much every day, and I own several pairs of Nike Zoom Structure running shoes. My husband also loves their trainers. I also buy my 3 kids' trainers, my son's football boots and our active wear from them. Spent a fortune over the years.

MinnieEgg · 06/04/2023 18:20

oh you just misgendered Dylan who is 365 days a woman . I don’t care what Dylan wears , they should not be the face of womens wear .

I thought he identified as a girl, not a woman.

L3ThirtySeven · 06/04/2023 18:15

It’s obviously aimed at a different demographic than their usual one. So the why is because they want to expand their customer base. Nothing wrong with that.

What demographic?

Oh, the one which is fetishising and appropriating womanhood? Nothing wrong with that, obviously, but Nike will get a lot of kickback and lose a lot of their female customers as a result.

Fairislefandango · 06/04/2023 18:35

Well technically you don’t need a the breast support of a sports bra for yoga.

I do. What is the need for sports clothing, if not to help you be able to comfortably and effectively do the sport/activity? So what do you actually mean by saying 'technically you don't need the support of a sports bra for yoga'? What does 'technically' even mean in this context?

ConstanceOcean · 06/04/2023 18:42

If they’re actually the face of Nike and being paid by them to advertise their sports bras (instead of him wearing it and then tagging Nike to look like they’re in partnership) then it’s absolutely ridiculous.

I wouldn’t need such a supportive sports bra if I had fake boobs.

How can I know how much support they have if the models boobs don’t jiggle like natural boobs.

That’s like me wearing a jock strap to advertise it.

Or a cat on a dog food advert.

There’s being inclusive and then there is being ridiculous.

Jonei · 06/04/2023 18:43

L3ThirtySeven · 06/04/2023 18:12

Well technically you don’t need a the breast support of a sports bra for yoga. Breast support is having breasts supported from the results of high impact exercise with a sports bra. It’s not saying you can do it half naked. Most yoga sports bras provide no more support than a crop top would.

Technically lots of women do need that extra support.Myself included.

ConstanceOcean · 06/04/2023 18:47

L3ThirtySeven · 06/04/2023 18:02

See, I don’t view clothing as needing to be inherently sexed. Why should any clothing be off limits for either sex? To argue only one sex can dress one way is to enforce (mostly european) patriarchal gender norms. Thought we were all for breaking those down not perpetuating them.

I agree.

But if I was plus sized and I went to a store specifically for plus sized women then why would they have size zero models doing the advertising - they wouldn’t because they’re trying to reach their target audience.

Why would Nike use a man with no boobs or fake boobs to advertise a piece of clothing that is literally designed for women.

Anyone can buy it and wear it and I’ll often buy mens clothing but when you’re trying to reach a certain audience it’s absolutely ridiculous to not use someone of that audience.

Which demographic is it aimed at? It's in women's wear! And the advert is for Nike Women

Jackiebrambles · 06/04/2023 19:29

I actually was in a Nike shop the other day (for the first time!) and I was quite impressed that they had mannequins that were different shapes and sizes. Some definite ‘plus size’ mannequin shapes wearing both yoga and running gear in the men’s and women’s ranges. And I thought that’s great as you don’t feel excluded and that their stuff is only for people who are elite! So this is a weird approach, to piss off a lot of women with buying power.

user1471517095 · 06/04/2023 19:34

I'm assuming Nike will also be using a women to advertise their Athletic Supports and Jock Straps?

Yes and she won’t even need to arse ‘himself’ getting a sock stuffer thing to fill the jock strap.

@L3ThirtySeven would this make sense to you or would it be a bit odd? Imagine the woman wearing the jock strap, you knowing there is nothing to put in it and no need for it. (not talking about them wearing it in their own private home before you mention that) just the fact that Nike would use this for an advert. Would be a bit odd, no?

Your downward dog must be off because gravity doesn’t go sideways.

downward dog fitness GIF

We must be talking about different downward dogs I think.
I would worry very much if my boobs went sideways in this pose.
As an added bonus, a topless man, no boob worries for this one....

PopGoesTheProsecco · 06/04/2023 19:41

As someone else posted on another board - maybe they should appeal to men by having a transman in a jockstrap doing karate moves.

But that’s not going to happen is it.

Greensleevevssnotnose · 06/04/2023 19:42

Hmm. @L3ThirtySeven what do you think? Would this appeal to men? make them want to exercise more?

Or would that ad campaign just never happen? I wonder...

Me neither. Well, not intentionally.

Real dogs probably do it, when they do that wriggle uppy downy pretzel pose.

jeffgoldblum · 06/04/2023 20:05

Anyone who thinks that video shows yoga , obviously doesn't know what yoga is ! 🧘‍♀️

Beantag · 06/04/2023 20:08

To be honest I wouldn't be arsed if a transwoman who had implants was advertising a sports bra, yes it takes away from female athletes and models, but they would need to wear bras at least. It's the ridiculous oh hee hee this is how women exercise.

MoggyMittens23 · 06/04/2023 21:06

DocStrangelove · 06/04/2023 20:15

Ah yes. It would be wild for Nike to make

If you've been buying Nike gear they have been pro-trans for awhile.

I have watched - what's your point sorry I am not following?
